When I bought this camera, I read every review I could find. I'm not a professional, but I've used this camera frequently for a couple of years now. I have often thought of upgrading, but always manage to talk myself out of it because of the inevitable question, "Why?"

I use velvia 50 in it most of the time and my pictures come out fantastic. If I had a scanner, you'd see them here :-) It's very easy to use and very lightweight. I've taken it to Texas, Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico, and all over California and never had a problem. It's been in snowstorms, rainstorms, and 117 degree heat and never had a problem. Any problems were user related (like not setting the aperature on my lens to the smallest one...it cost me a couple of shots in Disneyland, but I learned!)

I use it with only Nikon lenses: 50mm (rarely used) 24mm, 35-70mm (came with it), and 105mm micro. I've also thought of going digital, but, again, why? I get much better quality without having to spend time in Photoshop.

If you want a great camera, get it. I can't recommend it high enough. My only advice, skip the 3rd party lenses and get Nikon lenses. You'll thank yourself later.

Nikon N80 is a reasonably well designed SLR with great features. It's controls are ergonomically placed for ease of operation. Custom feature like on-demand grid in the viewfinder and spot metering ability in addition to CW and 3D Matrix are bonus features.
The only major drawback I found is it's limitation to meter with older AI Nikkors and that's too unfair. This model meets most requirements of any serious amatuer photographer like me.

Good weight, solid structure. Some people find all the functions hard to navigate, but I found it was easy to get the hang of. The only gripe I would have is the mount is sometimes a little funky, and I have to remount a lens after a change.

My camera, is like my companion, usually always where I am. I like it because it IS a film camera, and isn't digital. I LOVE film, and digital should never replace it, I have a little digital pocket camera, but its just not the same.

I feel for my level and some time to come this camera (N80 Nikon) Does everything I need and will want in time to come. The only thing I miss not having a digital is the immidiate satisfaction of seeing your photo's, and the convience of not going through the prossecing process.

THE N80 WAS A GOOD DEAL. I PAID ABOUT AVERAGE PRICE FOR IT, BUT IT'S QUIET TRIGGER RELEASE HAS BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF SHOOTING WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY. ANYTIME YOU CAN MAKE LITTE OR NO NOISE AROUND 50 ALLIGATORS WHILE KAYAKING THROUGH LAKE GEORGE IN THE MIDDLE OF MATING SEASON IS A GREAT THING. THE DON'T SEEM TO APPRECIATE HUMAN TALK OR STRANGE NOISES EARLY IN THE MORNING.

I still do shoot film and when I do I use one of my slr's. My Nikon N80 is now my perfered shoot. It is an excellent tool. Too bad digital has come so far so fast. I find my self just grabbing my Evolt instead of a film camera. I do convert all my film to digital via my Nikon LS 2000 film scanner. The N80 take great pics under most any condition in auto program mode. Focus is fast and very sharp in all lighting conditions. I very much enjoy the camera but I find myself using it less and less.

I just picked this camera up after selling my Nikon N65. This sure is a handy little 35mm camera, I needed one that had, of all things a lot of new cameras lack, a cable release. Well, the N80 had one and since it looked and felt/operated so much like my D70 I bought it. Very easy to use 35mm body. I'm taking some photography courses at a local college and we're required to shoot this format. It may seem a bit archaic to many but I still love film. Since I've only owned this body a few days, I can't rate it the highest but I like the Nikon quality.

I was very scared at first to use my camera, but once I started reading the manual and practicing, I really enjoy it. It is really simple to use and offers a lot of different options to play with and experiment with. Like multiple photos on one frame, the auto focus feature, being able to be in manual mode, and many other features. I even took to non-credit photography classes at my local college to learn about how to use these features and have fun when taking pictures. My favorites are animals/wildlife, children, action, and portraits.

i got this as a step up from the N65 i had before it so i could have two cameras at any one time. one loaded with BW and the other color depending on how i wanted to get the shot. this is a terrific camera. unfortunately the door latch broke on the N65 so i'm back to one camera. so i'm debating whether or not to buy another N80 body or go with the D70.

This camera, for my purposes, has it all. It is not overly complex to learn, like my F100 was, and the photos were equally good. Unless there's a specific reason to want a really complex camera, I think this one is the ideal film SLR.

Nikon N80/F80 is the best value camera I can think of. I had two. There was nothing that this camera did not have and it was cheap, so I could afford two, one for slide one for print film or one for tele one for wide lens. It was great to have two N80 bodies for travel just in case. I had them for four years until Digital SLRs did not fall into sane price range.

I moved to this camera from a pentax k1000(also a good camera) and have been enjoying it. I find the metering system to be right on the money and the prints from this camera turn out excellent.

If you find entry level SLR's don't have all the features you want, but you don't want to drop the cash on a professional level body the N80 is probably for you!

It has an outstanding meter and autofocus system, a laundry list of features and a nice compact size. It has a lightweight polycarbonate body which you can't "drive nails with" (as has been said of the F5) but why would you want to do that anyway :)

Great camera.

I was trained to do photogaphy using a 35 mm SLR..........and although I know that you can still get good quality prints from a digital camera.........I am soooooooooo hesitant to go the digital route. I would almost rather keep on ordering cds with my prints and opening them up in photoshop. I know, its crazy. I just loooooooove to shoot using a 35mm!

My Nikon N80 was an upgrade in the fall of 2004 when I got back into photography but wasn't quite ready to buy a digital SLR. I think it's a great camera for developing technique and learning more. At least it works for me.

A good, all-around 35mm SLR. East to use, fairly rugged body. One drawback is the battery meter, which shows as "full" until the camera quits operating from lack of power.

I have used the N-80 in many situations and have been very happy with the results. The ability to do multi exp. is great for those unusal situations and abstract photos and the cable release is off the shelf which makes it easy when you lose one. The camera is well loved by me.

it's great cept that it tends to freeze up occasionally especially in cold weather. The shutter just jams up causing an ERR failure. It's a great camera. Has the same functions as a large format camera but cost less.

Love this camera! The 18 custom functions make it flexible enough to adapt to a wide variety of situations. Backlit LCD makes low-light operation easy; all the information in the viewfinder and ease of input makes eye-level operation a snap. Depth-of-field preview button! Yay! It is all Nikon...if you're familiar with the Nikon system, learning it will be a breeze. The only drawbacks are that you can't use AI lenses; compensation (flash & exposure) and bracketing are only done in 1/2 stops. (But I have an N70 if I need the AI lens or 1/3 stops). If you're like me and have an older backup body and an N80, buy the D lenses, not the G's so you can use them on both bodies. Memorizing 18 numerical functions...each with 2 or more settings...get a cheat sheet!

I've used my N80 for over 4 years and never had a problem with it. Features that sold me on it are the grid line option, depth of field preview, and the mechanical cable release, which for a "serious" hobbyist like myself really come in handy. The design is comfortable to handle and the controls are easy to manage.

A great camera for a camera-enthusiast. It's got great features and has a sturdy body. It allows has a nice medium weight, if that is important to you. I mostly use it in Manual mode, but Aperture and Shutter Priority are good options as well. I love this film camera.

Mine's a great copy. Got it used last 2003. I always get great pictures from it. Good handling - light, fast, fits well in my hands with the MB-16. Metering is good, yet sometimes gets fooled, but most of the time it delivers. Coupled with SB80DX, wow this is the perfect tool. I have a digicam, but I'm too lazy to post process. So I prefer the F80 over it- take a shot and print- no need to color-correct because it always gives you the right exposure. I didn't regret buying it, most especially i got it at a low price :) while everybody's crazy to go digital, the F80's getting a good bargain :)

I love my N80, it is so easy to use and understand. The pictures are clear and crisp. The pictures have great quality when enlarged. I purchased this camera because of the material I read about it. I needed a lighter SLR because of a muscle problem I have. I found the N80 much lighter than my other cameras and the quality of the pictures are great. I really can't find anything wrong with my little toy... maybe some years from now I could tell you what I don't like, but right now I love it. I have been using this camera about 5 years now. cjm

I haven't gotten to use this camera much. I am planning ot use it solely for black and white photography. I just tested it out with come color film. I can't give it an honest review until i get the roll developed. The one thign that I do not like about it is that it has a different shutter speed increments than my Nikon D100 digital SLR. I was planning on shooting with the digital until i get myself a light meter or know the zone system better and then i would transfer the settings to my N80. This will not be much of a problem but stinks anyways.

This is a fantastic little camera. I would recommend it for a beginner and even for a pro who is looking for something small and lightweight that can still do everything a pro expects. It is quiet and the mirror is very gentle, which (almost) makes up for the lack of a real mirror lock-up. And you can't beat the price!

I've used a standard manual SLR for years. Using the Nikon N80 has thrown me into a different dimension! It is not a simple camera. It's many functions forces you to think about speed, aperture, to use fill-flash or not, etc. It is an instrument whose functions must be learned, practiced and used often. I like everything about it - I just have a lot to learn about this camera along with composing my shot. I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to override the camera when it does not allow me to take a picture, i.e., shutter-release fals to operate.

This camera is a very good one. Its main drawback is focus hunt at extreme low-light conditions, which is one of the major reasons I moved up to a F100. Also, I would not recommend use of its built-in flash at distances greater than 2 meters (about 6-7 feet).

everything is great except it is annoying that after you shoot a roll or 24 or 36 exp. it will not rewind the film until it actually feels tension on the film so if you forget about what frame number your on you could be shooting on frames that dont exist like frame 37 and 38 on a 36 exp roll

My first SLR Camera. And I think it is the best in its price range. Everything you need from Beginner to Amateur Level. The only sad part is its Battery Pack MB-16... No 2nd shutter release button. Unlike the F75! Why? Anyways, i have no regrets with it. I'm still in the learning process. I love this Camera! Because I love her... I even gave her a name... FATE. Hehehe.

First Nikon I have owned (always had Canon)... I like it very much, only mistakes are my errors. I still have lots to learn as I just got it, manual tends to be a tad confusing, but trial & error always help too... so far a very good buy for the money. Love how you can set shutter & appeture will auto set for you! Would recommend to anyone

In Jan. I bought the N-80 the day before going to Las Vegas. I read the instructions on the plane and was thrilled with the nightime postcard pictures I got fooling around trying the different settings. I am still learning how to use the camera but the manual is quite good.
Normally I take hundreds of low light on stage pictures so I decided to go for it! I bought the Nikon VR 70-200 2.8 lense. Foolishly I took 20+ rolls without ever having tried the lense WOW all my pictures not only came out the only bad pictures were my fault. This camera is great, light weight and inexpensive the N-80 will be a perfect travel camera plus I would not totally freak out if something happened to my
N-80 camera but I would if I had bought the F-5. I bought the battery pack which doesn't add very much weight but really helps with the feel of the camera and helps even more with the long VR lense attached. I didn't use a tripod so the VR feature works awesome as most of my pictures were zoomed toward 200mm. The pictures came out crisp and clear better than with my old manual camera. I got great action shots in low light.
I recommend them both they sure make me look good.

I have owned a Nikon N80 for about a year now and think its a great camera. The autofocus on the camera is fast and smooth. Like all of today's cameras, it has a dizzying amount of features, matrix metering, dynamic autofocus , automated bracketing of exposure etc. The vast majority of that stuff I don't use, as I've learned to trust a gray card and to shoot manually (which you can do with the n80). I've found that "program" mode on the N80 does quite a good job in most situations. My only knock against the camera-no built in PC socket.

This camera is a real good begginer/amatuer camera. At frist it does take some reading and experiments just like any other camera to get used to all the features, but once you have set up all of the settings to your own convience its a great camera to have. I recommend this camera to any Landscape and Still photographer beacsue of the Varies Lens and accerories that can be used with this camera.

I moved up to the Nikon N80 after my old Canon AE1 finally died,it was a good camera that served me well for a long time. *Pros:I have really enjoyed the N80.It feels good and is very comfortable with all the settings and functions within reach. The TTL and Metering systems takes all the guessing about what the settings should be so your free to concentrate on the shot especially the Focus Tracking when shooting sports. Its very versatile as far as being able to shoot indoor weddings/events(with a speedlight) as well as outdoor Sporting events. The camera is light and is much easier to hold when you add the optinal MB-16 Battery handle that holds 4AA batteries. The AA batteries will make life easier when you are somewhere that does not have the CR-123 batteries, also if you keep some Nicad rechargeable AAs and a quick car charger with you in your bag you can be assured you will not go without power. The built in speedlight is sufficient for snapshot type pics but you need a speedlight if you are going to be serious or require fill flash for anything that is important. The Depth of field button is also great, especially when you are shooting an event and you get the occasional kid that insists that you take his/her picture, just act like your taking their picture and push the DOF button, the camera will click and sound just like you took the picture when it stops the lens down ;). The on demand Grid lines are awesome when you need them for shots that need to be level or just for the rule of thirds. The N80 is definately user friendly and is not hard to master after a couple rolls of film. It has all the needed and most desired functions that everyone from beginner to Semi-Pro may ever need or want to use. *Cons: Not reccomended for wet or very damp shooting environments,it is not weatherproof or sealed to protect it from water or dirt/sand etc. I have heard others say that just moisture from temperature changes caused the insides to get damp and cause problems,I have not yet experienced this myself but it makes me very cautious about weather conditions. *I wish that I would have been told about the F100 and its construction of a sealed magnesium alloy metal that makes up its body, but that may be partially my fault for not researching better. **Conclusion:I will keep and use the N80 for sure, however I will be purchasing the F100 to use a primary shooter and use the N80 as a reliable backup and vacation camera.

I have always used Nikon Cameras and been very pleased with the results. Somewhat resistent to change, I was disappointed when my Nikon 6006 malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. But the Nikon 80 is terrific. I like being able to set everything manually, I like the selective focus in the viewfinder and have used the built in speedlight for fill flash extensively.

I like the camera but don't feel confident about the different programs and settings. When I want to get a shot, I use the program or auto mode and basically use it as a "point and shoot" camera. I just recently learned that the camera does not have the capability to hook up to remote flashes and I wish it had that feature.

I love my camera! It's a has a perfect blend of functions for when I want to point and shoot or be more creative. The exposure meter and auto focus have never let me down. I have looked at "professional" cameras and see no reason to spend the extra money when the results are so good with the N80.

I really like the Nikon N80. It shoots very well and has a lot of the same features as the F100 at a fraction of the cost. The only drawback is the flash sync speed which is considerably slower than the F100. It is easy to learn and feels good in the hands

I like this camera because: lighter in comparison with F100 and F5 but still a lot of nice fitures; long battery life; build in flash. I have nothing to say about "not like" this camera, because this really reliable tool.

It as an awesome camera for the price, and just even for the camera. The exposure meter is incredibly accurate, film advancing smooth, control layout easily understandable, grid lines (!!!), analogue shutter release capabilities (no expensive IR remote or batteries), compatible with the best flash units Nikon offers (great results with SB-80DX), and the camera is just simply packed with features. The only thing that I wish this camera had would be a mirror lock-up system so that taking photos around the 1/3" shutter range wouldn't be so prone to blur. You can still get magnificently sharp images at that speed, but of course it would be better with the MLU.

I am very happy with this camera, the only thing lacking is a studio flash connection. But that is an easy add-on. Other than that I would say that its a bit light weight, too easy to shake for hand held shots. The optional battery pack will be a great purchase with this camera.

I can only rave about this equiptment. I always go to a photo store and look at the gear before I purchase, so I know what I was getting. The N80 may be a middle-of-line camera, but has all of the things I was looking for. DOF preview, fast & accurate AF, focus tracking, a threaded shutter button for a cable release, etc. IT ROCKS!! The Sigma lens is just perfect for my landscape work, and works well for my portraiture. My next purchase is a prime lens, but I wouldn't trade in a thing.

This is a great camera. It has many possibilities and features to play with. Extremely versatile that allows you to use your creativity. Top quality. The only thing I don't like, is the wheight. I know there are lighter good cameras in the market, but I like this brand. You cannot have it all...

I love this camera. I have 2 N90's which I also think are great. I bought the N80 after purchasing the 80-400mm VR lense, as all features were not campatable with the N90. The N80 is light weight, and the features are easier and quicker to locate and use. I recently dropped(and destroyed) an N90 in the Ocean. Even though it is more expensive than the N80, I was glad that it was the 90 and not the 80!!

love it! with its auto and manual settings, and light meter it allowed me to learn abot apertures and s speed etc at my own pace, very user friendly. Only slight niggles would be it can“t be reprogrammed(recently want to change it so it rewinds film leaving film tail out), apparetnly only available on N90 plus. There is another model that prints aperture & s speed used on your negative for each shot, would be nice, but thats just being seriously picky. Its great!

A fantastic camera! I love it. It was relatively easy to learn most of the functions. It is not very complicated to use overall. The built-in flash works fine as a fill-in. This really is a fun camera to have. I feell that I get professional quality without the professional price.

I normally use Nikon's "professional" F5, but it's a bit on the heavy side. Anytime I wish to travel light I go with the N80 - very lightweight. Best yet, the economical N80 has many of the key features a serious photographer requires - i.e., depth-of-field preview, the same sophisticated exposure/focusing system as the F5, and a nice lineup of custom settings. Like the F5, the N80 has the ability to move easily between fully automated and fully manual. And the N80 pairs nicely with the F5 - most of the controls in the same place. One more thing that I like about the N80: a custom feature that allows for an "architectural" grid-style focusing screen (i.e., wonderful for keeping horizons level!). The N80 is perfect for any advanced photographer - whether to use as a primary camera or as a lightweight "back-up" camera.

The Nikon N80, isn't a F5, it isn't a F100, it ain't even a N90.............it wasn't meant to be. What it is though, is one heck of a camera. The "haters", have highly under-rated this camera. All the controls, buttons, whistles, that any beginner, to professional would ever want. This camera does it all. Whatever you ask...it does. Excellent autofocus, 18 custom settings, so you can personalise, your camera to your own lik'ins. Old school cable release abilities, the "GRID LINES"!!!! Great feel, quality construction. Hey Nikon knew what they were doing. It may not be a F5, F100, or a N90. But, the results are just as amazing. Buy the MB_16, battery pack/grip. It helps with the handling when you use any lens. It just feels "GOOD". Folks this is a "winner".

Well this being my first SLR cam, as I hope to start selling and having my works published, I bought the cam on the reputation of the Nikon name, and I'm glad I did, it's one of the best auto/slr's on the market, only con is I suppose is the re-set time between shooting when using flash/or flash attachments, slows down by atleast 1fps, over great investment !

My son got it from US for me. Well a camera with fantastic features & performance. Most SLR users know manual features but then what is wrong in uasing Auto Features with lot of flexibility for your personal creation specially when you get best result on AF & Programme mode. It is a camera which can be used by Amateur as well as professionals.

This was my first "real" film camera, and after agonizing for month's over Canon vs. Nikon, N65 vs. N90S vs. N80, etc... the N80 was my choice. To make a long story short, I love it! For the money, you can't beat the features (many of which can only be found in higher end cameras), and it definately suited my pro-sumer level needs. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone that asks... as a matter of fact I have two friends that now are proud owners and love their N80's as much as I do. Add this camera to a great piece of glass, and you're ready to rock and roll!

I just recently purchased a N80 and I have a 28mm-300 Tamron lens that I've been taking photos with. Let me tell you, that I really like the camera so far. I used it just the other day for a soccer game, and the shots came out great. The N80 is still in it's testing stage for a variety of photo assignments.

A totally awesome camera for the money. It was a little hard to get but definitely worth the work. I do wish it fired a little quicker but all in all it is a very easy to use camera with loads of options. Most convenient is the TTL flash metering, I wouldn't recommend a camera without it.

I am not a professional, I do little bit because it's my hobby. I have the same camera and have been using it for almost a year. It works to my satisfaction, at least in terms of money:performance. There is only disadvantage that built-in speed light is of low GN.

I guess in Asia, this unit is the F80 - same banana. But this baby is just great! Quite confusing at first since I formely using a very old manual Yashica and a vivitar. Both good cameras but very heavy. The N80 is light and has most of the features needed to take good photos. Its all up to the user.

I recently switched from Olympus in buying the N80. So far it has been great. I had initial reservations in an almost all automatic camera but it is just as easy to swithc to full manual on the N80. My first pictures came out pretty good although I still need to master the exposure settings. Overall a great camera and highly recommended.

Pros: This is one of best enthusiast Autofocus bodies on the market. Where else can you find pro features such as spot metering, AF/AE locking, AF point selection, exposure bracketing and 2.5 frames/second shooting rate? There are also 14 custom functions that you can set to make this product really work for you. It works with all Nikon AF lenses and their latest AF-S and VR lenses as well. Expansion options include a AA-size battery grip and a large diopter selection.

Cons: No mirror lock-up, no color matrix metering. But don't let these options dissuade you. They're only available on the F5 and the digital D1 series cameras, so they're truly high end features that the enthusiast will not miss.

In the field: If you're used to a point-and-shoot camera, the N80 will satisfy - simply select the P mode and it'll act just like a P&S. However, when you want to experiment and take more control over your photography skills, the N80 will not hold you back! You'll have a lot of options available, from autofocus and exposure to gridlines that can be superimposed over your viewfinder to make sure you're not taking a crooked picture. The autofocus is fast, and matrix metering confidently handles the exposure of your picture, allowing you to focus on composition and other factors.
