The Photographers Market Guide to Building Your Business by Vik Orenstein

Displaying the same wit and charm that made her Creative Techniques for Photographing Children a commercial success, Vik Orenstein shoots straight with photographers on what it takes to build a successful photo business. She combines big-picture thinking with a soft touch to deliver sound, practical advice on such core topics as developing a marketing plan, building a clientele, networking and maintaining creative fulfillment.
The guide is a major asset for: - Amateurs seeking a friendly overview of the business - Established photographers delving into a new niche - Freelancers interested in selling stock - Photographers starting their own studio

At 320 pages, the book's simultaneous deep and broad treatment makes it an excellent companion to the business-focused introduction found in Photographer's Market. Vik also covers such important specialties as wedding, commercial and nature photography in individual chapters and frequently complements her own advice with that of industry experts.

Vik Orenstein owns KidCapers Portraits, which she started from scratch fifteen years ago, and three Tiny Acorn Studios. Combined, they now gross more than $2 million per year. In 2004, Vik lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Vik is also teaching several exciting online courses here at BetterPhoto.com, on

Amazon.com and Its Affiliate, BetterPhoto.com

Vik,

My wife (Sharon Edwards) recently completed your Summer 07 course on photography. We also purchased two of your books. One on starting and managing a photography business, and another we just received on photographing children. I just have to tell you these are some of the absolute best books we have read on photography, and we have read many. We love your pragmatic, no fluff style and practical advice. They are so genuine and down to earth. I enjoyed your course as well as we both shared in the excitement of each of Sharon's new assignments. She is so excited over the experience of learning how to make better photos. One thing we are learning as we go along on this journey... It isn't as easy to become really good as many may initially think. You say as much in your books, especially the one on photographing children. I loved your term "bozos" as we read your piece on digital. Sharon's first really nice camera was an AE-1 Program I bought her for Christmas in 1982. She cut her teeth on film and has really enjoyed the ability to take so many more photos at so much less cost with digital. And you are so right. Just because you have a digital camera and Photoshop does NOT make you a photographer. We know so well now that the road to being a good photographer is just as long regardless of which format you use. The same rules apply either way. Thanks for all you do for us who are trying to get better. And thanks for your frank and absolutely true statements regarding the skill, knowhow and work it takes to become a contender in this profession. (Sharon takes all the photos, I just help her with Lightroom and file management, reducing file sizes, etc.) Her love for photography and my love of computers has created a great point of common interest in our lives.

Sincerely,

Bill Edwards

To Vik, I have just finished reading your book.I have recently just started my own business, and your book has helped me understand the industry better. And that with hard work and creativity I can be successful.

I found your book very easy to read and understand, beacuse I felt your approach was very realistic.

I was able to relate to everything even though im just starting out.
Also by reading about your experiences it showed me that we all start off small. But that it can be done..

So thank you for the great book and wisdom. It has given me lots of fabulous insight and encouragment.

Thanks
Trish pitt

Aloha,
just a quick note to say thanks!
I am thrilled with your Guide to Building You Photography Business Book!!!
I have been shooting for only three years ( though my father was a photo journalist so I have been in awe with photography all my life) Your book continues to be an eye opener, it is both encouraging and eye opening. Life seems a little better.more hopeful every time I pick it up! I can't say that for any other 'how to' book!
Your quick wit and your genuine compassion for your students makes me want to be a better and more passionate photographer! Thank you for opening the eyes of my heart. I look forward to signing up for classes in the near future.
