This is a fantastic tripod. Lightweight, compact and very sturdy, this little work of art will serve any backpacker or travelling photographer. Small enough to fit into your luggage, the Mountaineer still exhibits great durability and rock-solid sturdiness. The only thing I don't like is that it uses twist locks on the telescoping legs; while these make for a more compact tripod, I prefer the snap locks such as those on a Bogen tripod; I can set up and take down a bit more quickly with this style.

Gitzo continues to do it right. The G1228MK2 Carbon Fiber continues the trend of ligh weight high quality EXPENSIVE Gitzo hardware. This model comes with the rapid center column which allows it to reach a maximun height of 62 1/8", yet the unit folds down to a very portable 20.5" for travel . Due to its light weight (3 1/4lbs) it is an ideal hiking or travel tripod. It has four leg sections which means you have to deal with nine of the much maligned Gitzo Leg lock collars. If anyone has ever complained about a Gitzo (besides the price) it would be because of the leg lock system. It does come down to personal choice but the fact that they are very simple in design and streamline fits in with the whole Gitzo concept of light weight, portable and streamline carbon systems. With its lifetime warranty it will be the last tripod you will ever buy. Just take the time to buy the right model the first time. Though the resale prices are excellent you will not want to have to spend this kind of money twice....
