Learning is all about the attitude the student brings to the class. Some students are pupils, they think the teachers have nothing better to do than to teach them. But, I've not found this the case with BetterPhoto instuctors, who are professional photographers, and auhors and have made time in their busy schedules to teach students who want to learn.

I've read her excellent books, and long to have her as an instructor. She's an awesome author, a fine photographer, and I'm certain an excellent instructor, if the student goes in with the right attitude.

I've been waiting a long time to improve my skills and look forward to the filters and lenses she recommends to achieve better photos.

I know from studying photography for decades that what I learned from film photography is applicable to digital. And, regardless, I still have my film cameras, and some Provia slide film in the freezer that I need to use with guidance of how to achieve the best images from that film. I'm looking forward to improving my work with Brenda's guidance.

If you want to take better photos then you should take this class. It’s that simple.

I have some issues with the class, I found the class material dated and instructor recommending expensive filters that she benefits from and I’m sure the filters are fine, but they are costly and if you are starting out it’s clearly not something you would ad to your arsenal. I have taken many classes on BP and found it rather frustrating that I felt Brenda was doing us a favor working in the critiques because of her travel and book editing obligations. These were the cons and I have to say if you want to learn to take better photos, then take this class. I’m sure the class will be updated and it’s presented in a learnable method.

This is a five star class, it’s only three stars for because of the issues I mentioned, but trust me when I say it all works out and you will get some new ways to make better photos when you take this class.

Cheers,

Troy

An excellent course, which has provided a focus for my photography for the last 2 months. The materials were clear and relevant, and the lessons built on each other. I found Brenda's feedback on all images (not just my own) very useful. I'd be delighted to do a class with her again, and wish her well with her book.

I took this class hoping to improve my skills in perspective, composition and light. I am happy to say that Brenda’s class provided exactly what I was looking for. Her honest and insightful critiques helped me to see clearly where I could improve and the lessons I’ve learned will continue to help me on my photographic journey.

I was skeptical about taking a course on line, but after learning with Brenda I am ready for much more! Brenda's course has helped me to SEE in a more creative way, to pay attention to the frame, the light, the perspective but maybe more than the technical is to pay attention to my "intent" of the photo and to find the "heart" of an image. I found her critiques to be most helpful and when I applied her suggestions it took the image to a whole other level of interest and impact. Thank you, Brenda! Jeanne

Brenda's lessons taught me new ways of seeing what I shoot. They are consistently clear, interesting and concise. Her critiques are meticulous and exacting - just what I needed. I know I improved a lot over these weeks, and I know how to work on continuing to improve.

I just wish she taught more courses, or that this one had another 4 weeks..

You can't hope for a better instructor than Brenda. Not only are her lessons enlightening, her assignments are fun. Her feedback is worth the price of the course itself. She tells you what works and why, and what you should try to avoid next time and again why. That is what I needed. I believe that under her tutelage, I learnt to see better... and that is what ultimately mattered to me.
I wish she offered another 8 week course and I would have enrolled in it.

Anyone wanting to learn the basics of good composition will want to take this course. Brenda offers weekly assignments with clear instructions and some of her photographs as examples. You don't need elaborate camera gear for this course. I wish there was a Part 2 to the course.

I just want to say to all of those who are wondering whether taking an online photo class will really improve their photography-- in my experience, yes. Creating Visual Impact was very helpful to me because the instructor has sharp eyes that pointed out things in my images that I hadn't really been aware of before and now that time has passed, I see that I've incorporated those ideas into my photography and it's made my pictures better. This course was the first I took at BetterPhoto and at level 3 it may have been advanced for me at the time but I really feel I learned a good deal from it. I don't give this class 5 stars because I was a bit disappointed by the instructor's frequent lack of internet access due to travel/in-person teaching. However I still feel that if you pay attention to the lessons and critiques your photography will be improved by this course.

Her critiques are very helpful, suggesting improvements that could be made, while highlighting things that were done well. I enjoyed the interaction with other students, as well.

This was a fun course and it also was one of the best student classes I have participated with. There were lots of conversations between students/teacher & Brenda provided very constructive and supportive critiques. Brenda made me stretch my thinking for composing more artistically and opened my eyes to more choices when composing an image. This is a great course and I highly recommend it. I will carry this class with me every time I look through the viewfinder. I just hope you get some great classmates that I was lucky enough have in my class. Now what are you waiting for ? Sign up.

Several months have passed since I finished Brenda's course, and I've been able to apply many of the techniques she taught. Creating Visual Impacts is the best course I could have taken. Brenda is more than a teacher. Her passion for the craft inspires. She views photography through a unique lens that makes students more thoughtful and creative. If Brenda offered Creative Visual Impacts II, I'd take it without hesitation. I just loved this course and her feedback. Both made me a better photographer.

It is a well composed class on composition (pun? what pun?:) and elements of imaging techniques.

Can you read all of it in books? Yes! Can you learn all of it from the books? Probably, not! Well, at least some people like myself can not. Within 8 weeks? Definitely, not! Don't believe me? Well, I saw a lot of people (including myself) who read a lot of books without much progress. Do you?

Critique is a very important and extremely useful part of the class as well as targeted assignments. I learn a lot from shooting with a goal in mind rather then in a typical "freelance" style - press the button and hope for the best.

Working on the assignments and reading critiques creates wonderful feeling that I become more aware of what happening in the frame DURING the capture and not after I print the image and before I put in a trash can. That is very important cost and time saving transition the class helped to make.

The amount of information is large enough to keep learning and practicing for a year or more.

I think a level (novice - advance) does not really matter. Pretty much everybody will learn from the class only there will be different things for different people.

When I was reading reviews before the class I wanted to know photographic level of people who wrote them. So here it is: I'm not a professional photographer in a sense that less then 6% comes from photography (actually - significantly less :). I'm not a complete novice and have some minor photo contests won alone with some income. BTW, the last contest was won with an image shot during the class. So I guess in BP vague classification I should be in intermediate-advance range.

I am very happy that I took this course. Brenda's lessons are always very thought-provoking. She makes you think about why you would want to shoot certain things in certain ways. I was really thinking differently as the class progressed.

Her critiques are always useful, making use of constructive criticism where it is needed.

I have really enjoyed the past 8 weeks, and last weekend felt odd without having to think about my next assignment!
I have learned a lot and feel a lot more confident in my ability to take better photographs.
My only complaint-the class was far too large. I also felt that there was a slightly cliquey atmosphere. There were too many other students and it was difficult to do more than glance at other students' work unless you wanted to spend all day on line. I did a photoshop course at the same time with fewer students and a better chance to look at everyone's work.

Hi Brenda,

As you know, I withdrew from your class early but I re-enrolled. I withdrew because of what Richard Sogon commented on in his 2 star review of your course. You reassured me that you took great interest in the course and students and as far as I'm concerned you delivered. Your reviews weren't the next day but they were excellent as was the advice that you gave.

I enjoyed the course and would reccomend it to anybody as I said in my review. I just wanted to tell you that I don't agree with his evaluation at all. I rated the course as 5 stars because of what I got out of it and my value for my money and I stand by that evaluation.

This was my first Better Photo Class. Brenda is not only an excellent photographer, she is an excellent teacher.

I found her classes to be expressive, challenging and forcing me to think 'out side' my comfort zone at times. The challenge for me is to continue the lessons past the class.

My only complaint was the class size. I felt it was too large for Brenda to manage by herself. She always answered the questions, and did her very best to keep everyone informed of her progress. I appreciate that.

But with the large class, I really think it was too much work for her to manage on her own.

The other students were good. The skill level ran the spectrum very EXCELLENT to just getting started. It was fun to see the other students ideas, and to read the students and Brenda's critiques.

I believe that Brenda was awesome at giving honest critques and encouragment in this course. I also feel, that I could approach her in the future and ask for her advice and she would respond and help immediately. Having been in a One-year-course in the past, I do believe that it is important to realize that every person has a "life" outside of photography. Brenda was out of town, but she did do her homework and did keep us informed as to where she was going to be.
I also think the students in the course are invaluable...expecting to learn from only the instructor can be disappointing....appreciating all the knowledge and encouragement from the entire class is priceless. . . thanks again!

Although Brenda Tharp is one of my favorite photgraphers, is extremely knowledgeable, and has written an excellent book, I was disappointed with the course. She sent frequent emails appologizing for being out of town, attending conferences, for being busy with her family, and critiques of photographs were often two weeks after submission. The content of the critiques was usually excellent, but I felt as if they were done at the last minute, squeezed into a too heavy schedule. I know that my work schedule is at least as demanding as Brenda's, and it took a great effort to find the time to work on her assignments (which were excellent), but I didn't feel that there was a reciprocal interaction. In summary, Brenda is an outstanding photographer and teacher, seems to be a very nice person, the content of the course is excellent, only I felt that she should teach it when she has more time to respond in a more timely manner. I am planning on taking another course with Brenda, because she has much to offer. Perhaps I've been spoiled by previous courses that had an instructor and a co-instructor, where critiques or answers to questions were given almost daily, which gave a feeling of an interaction between you and the instructor.

Without a doubt this is one of the best courses I have ever had. I can't speak highly enough of Brenda Tharp as a teacher. Her lessons were very clear and challenging and the help she provided throughout the course was outstanding. She responded to each and every question with clear explanations that were specific to each of our needs yet general enough that we could all learn from them. Her critiques stretched me in a very positive way and were always supportive and encouraging. My goals for improving the creativity in my photograpy were certainly met. I know I will go back again and again to the course web site until it is taken off because of all the informaiton there.

Anyone who knows me knows that I can be wordy, but Brenda deserves nothing less.

Two years ago I took Brenda's travel course, and since it was my first Betterphoto class, I was a little over my head, although it was meaningful enough that I came back for more...and more...and more...

14 or so courses later, this class was by far the best for me from a creative point of view. Up to now, the most helpful classes were Lewis Kemper's Toolbox classes, and I still think that every serious photography student should take every one of his classes. At the same time, they should be immersed in classes with Brenda. And probably others...there are so many good instructors at BetterPhoto.

Each of the eight lessons was meaningful. The interaction between students AND Brenda was phenomenal and spirited. Brenda has high expectations, and yet she is kind and thoughtful in her critiques.

Brenda is a wonderful photographer, as anyone can see from her images interspersed in the lessons, and her beautiful nature photography book. What made her stand out for me, however, was her genuine connection with each and every student in the class. Not only did she make personal connections with each of us, but with the subjects of our images. If I uploaded a picture of my dog, Brenda referred to the dog by name, and with genuine warmth. Each week she gave us a pep talk, and that helped everyone of us as we dealt with January and February, the blah months in terms of weather and lighting.

Even more important, at least for me, is Brenda's funny sense of humor; sometimes it's wry, sometimes it's self deprecating. It's always appreciated. When a student uploads a picture or three, he or she is exposing himself to criticism, and it resembles singing a solo---there is an immediate reaction either positive or negative. It can be really difficult for anyone's self esteem. As adults, risk taking can be really scary.

I'm a teacher, and I learned, or relearned, some skills about communication with students: be honest but be supportive and encouraging. As I said to her, sometimes that's hard to do when kids are bopping each other over the head. At least we didn't do that in this class, but if we had, I feel certain that Brenda would have popped in with her amazing humor, and would have set us back on track.

I heartily recommend this class; it was tops in every way! It just can't get any better than a class, or three or four with Brenda!

Cindy

Brenda was a very good teracher from whom I learned a lot. Her critiques and responses were timely and to the point. I certainly would take another course from her and maybe even repeat this one! The dialog and critiques with fellow students was also great. One suggested improvement for th website. I would like to be able to view at times just the instructors critiques on all photos filtering out the other students. Thanks again Brenda

Brenda Tharp is a wonderful teacher. Her passion for photography, sense of humor, honed technical skills, amazing creativity and ability to communicate make her one of the best teachers that I have ever had. The $300.00 investment was worth every penny because of Brenda's enthusiasm for and knowledge of photography.

I listed several goals that I wanted to achieve during the course in my pre-course survey and I felt like each one of those goals was met and in fact, exceeded. I found the lessons to be well laid out and easy to understand. The shooting assignments were very good learning exercises and the critiques were very insightful and quite helpful. I made good progress as a photographer because of the course and I will invest in future courses at Betterphoto.com.

Betterphoto.com support was excellent, they were glad to accommodate my schedule by sending me assignments early. They were very professional and the interface is easy to understand and use. I would recommend them to anyone.

The course was well organized and delivered what it promised. The use of Brenda's own work to illustrate her points reinforced her credibility as a very skilled and professional photographer. Her critiques always began on a positive note and were succinct, insightful and on point. She was very supportive of student initiatives, and regularly suggested areas for continuous improvement. She always maintained a good sense of humor and encouraged students to discuss ideas, questions and possible solutions among themselves. She is a very qualified instructor. I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone.

This was my first course at BP and was a real blast! Brenda is a phenominal teacher who not only gave precise and valuable critiques, but encouraged everyone in the class to communicate their feelings of a photo. This class came as close as possible to actually be sitting in a classrom. I feel that I have made friends with fellow classmates in this country and abroad.
I am now registered for a 4 week course in September and Brenda's Macro Photography course in October. I am definitely hooked on Betterphoto.com.

This was my 2nd course with Brenda and she was just as great for 8 weeks as for 4. Her lessons force you to stretch your creativity and teach you how to see more. Her critiques are insightful, sometimes humorous and push you to go further to get even better images. Thanks Brenda...see you in Macro II. Lynn Wiezycki

A good course. There is plenty of information squeezed into the short 8 weeks. It feels a little as if I have been drinking from a fire hose, and that it will probably take many months to fully absorb the good input that we have received over the past 8 weeks. The assignments were good, but I almost felt a if I would like to be able to submit three shots for each subsection of the assigment (rather than a total of 3 submissions). Also, I felt the class size was a little too big, e.g. less interaction than I had hoped, and perhaps Brenda was stretched a little.

I had high hopes and expectations coming into this class. I am delighted to say they were all met. I know as a result of this class I make better photographs than I did eight weeks ago. Brenda is a talented phtographer, and I learned much from her her critiques and comments (both of my photos and other participants'). But I also feel my interaction and connection with the other students was equally valuable, and a positive influence on my learning.

This was a great course & Brenda managed to get some stuff out of me I didn't know I could.

My wife even noticed the improvements!

Only v minor point is I got the impression Brenda was challenging to us at the beginning of the course & then softened on us a little. Maybe this was as we improved (I hope)? However, she always pointed out possible improvements & I really enjoyed it & have since signed up for my third course at BP!

This was my first class with Betterphoto. I debated for many months if I should take a on line class, I wasn't sure what to expect. What a surprise!!!! I loved this class! Brenda Tharp is a great teacher! I learned so much from her. The other students were also very helpful. I started to take better photos after the first class. I liked it so much I signed up with Brenda on a 4 week course, which I also enjoyed.
I wish this class had been longer, 8 weeks just flew by. Creating Visual Impact got me to get out and take pictures, and to really think about what I was photographing.
Take this class! It is well worth it.

This is my first on-line photography course, and I was surprised to find out how effective it was. The lessons are very well organized and full of useful information. Using these lessons helped me to organize stuff I already know and also widen my knowledge with new concepts. Brenda's critiques were very informative and pointed out clearly the issues I should improve on and the ways to do so. After the course I feel more aware of my composition choices and more able to make decisions that will yield more impact. Seeing how the others interpreted the weekly assignments was very interesting and inspiring. I will be taking more of these on-line courses.

I really enjoyed this course and learned a lot from it. You can always read books but you can't ask questions of a book or get the book to tell you what you're doing wrong. Brenda's critiques were always very helpful. The other students frequently offered interesting view points and advice, too. The whole experience was good and I plan to take another course as soon as spring comes and the weather turns warm again.

This course was great, and exactly what I was hoping what it would be, and more. Brenda's encouragement and critiques were very helpful, and her honesty and good nature clearly showed thru. I also greatly appreciated her detailed and thoughtful responses in the Q&A section on some of the less tangible aspects of photography. She provided a lot of helpful insight and ideas that I know will keep me busy for a long time! I would definitely recommend her course.

I liked the course so much that I am hoping to take another from Brenda. One comment I have is that her photo examples were almost too beautiful. I really struggled at times to find something to photograph for an assignment because I didn't have access to scenes like hers. I learned a lot and really appreciated her comments.

This was a terrific course. I originally chose it from among many highly-rated courses for its outline. Each lesson focused on an artistic theme such as "tension" or "motion" rather than on photographic mechanics like f-stops.

I was not disappointed. In each lesson Brenda deconstructed the theme into its elements so I could put the concepts into practice without simply trying to replicate her example photos. Brenda's comments on my submitted photos were straightforward and encouraging. She always gave constructive advice on what I could do better.

I also enjoyed seeing the work of my fellow students, and sharing comments with them.

My only criticism isn't with the course or the instructor - it's the web site. The functionality is good, but navigating from one task to another is confusing and requires far too many steps. Also, the site has a cluttered look that detracts from the photographic content.

I highly recommend this course. Thank you, Brenda, for a rewarding experience.

Brenda is a great photographer, but to learn photography one needs a teacher who can put the art of photography into words, and Brenda does that very well. To learn, a student needs feedback, the quicker the feedback the faster one learns. I can tell you from my experience of her class that Brenda did the critiques not only punctually, but earlier. All questions were answered within 24 hours.

If your goal is to really get serious about your photography and you are ready to work hard, Brenda is an amazing teacher! Brenda creates an environment that is friendly and truly inspirational. The sharing with fellow students is a wonderful part of all BP classes and in this class, particularly, the students seemed genuinely fired up and I think a great deal of the credit for this belongs to Brenda. Every lesson, every assignment pushed my own personal limits and, I think, helped me to become a more confident and creative photographer. Thank you, Brenda and I hope to soon take another class with you.

Brenda,

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you (!!!) for the course. It was extremely well organized and presented.

Your ability to give quality constructive criticism and feedback in a meaningful and supportive manner is a rare gift, and to be emulated by teachers of any profession.

I've learned exactly what I wanted and expected from the course, and look forward to continuing to use these lessons to think about, apply to and trustfully improve my photography going forward. I look forward to learning more from you in the future.

Thanks again,

Adam

I really improved my ability to "see" photos in this class. Brenda's lessons are clear with examples that helped me visualize what I was trying to accomplish for the week.

The idea of concentrating on one or a couple of concepts per week was a great way to build skills. I spent the week focused on the one topics. I felt like that gave me time to drill the concept in.

Then, uploading the pictures and receiving the constructive feedback helped me refine my skills further.

I give the class 10 and look forward to more classes from Brenda and others. I hope Brenda will offer an extension sometime.

Brenda Tharp's Creating Visual Impact was an excellent class. Although it felt a little "advanced," it was also filled with many basic tips for improving our photographs. I especially appreciated Brenda's detailed critiques, and am definitely able now to look at my pictures with a more critical eye. All in all, a great course.

Once I did I really enjoyed the whole process. I thought that Brenda's critiques were very helpful and constructive. I also appreciate the encouragement she gave to me and the rest of the class. I also appreciate all the comments of my classmates.

I recommend this course. Specifically, I recommend Brenda Tharp as a teacher. Her lessons and assignments were interesting and stimulating - they made me feel eager to go and try what she was talking about. I find Brenda to be a better-than-average writer, quite good at explaining concepts with a few lines. Best of all (for me) were her critiques - very, very helpful. I appreciated her praise when my images deserved it, and when she had criticisms or made suggestions, I felt like she'd hit the nail on the head and really focussed in on what needed improvement. Overall, I enjoyed myself and learned a lot. Thank you, Brenda!

If you would like to learn from a Professional Photographer, that really has her act together, then you’ve found the right course.
Brenda gets you out of your comfort zone.
(You know that little box we like to hibernate in).
When you see a great scene, but then you get your photo, and you wonder why it didn’t come out like you wanted.
Brenda gets you to look at it from all angles, and styles, she gets you to use that right side of the brain. Be Creative, just don’t settle for a photo. Learn to make Art out of that Kodak moment.
Would I recommend this course?
You bet I would.

This is a great course for photographers of every level. I found Brenda's lessons were clear, concise and inspiring. Her critiques were detailed and adapted to the needs of each member of the group. The weekly assignments were fun and as challenging as we wanted to make them.

Brenda taught me things I didn't know, gently reminded me of stuff I'd forgotten and, in short, changed for the better my picture-making process through an eight week course which led us gradually though a checklist of creative considerations. It's been a fantastic learning experience!
