This camera is wonderful. I can't fault it, really. This is my second 828. I do a lot of macro work in heat and humid weather. I also use this for magazine work. I haven't learned everything about it, but I do publish my images in a magazine I work for, and have the images for ads and to illustrate my articles. I will also be using them for stock images.
Sometimes, I agree, there is noise in low light. Important to me is getting something (as w/the insects I photograph) then work on getting it right. Sometimes to get an ID, it's impossible if you have an insect with the jitters. I also use it for horses and other animals, and occasionally it has grown hot in my hand from shooting.
It is a workhorse. I heartily recommend it. (Please do not slip into water and drown it. Been there, done that.)

I LOVE my Sony Cybershot f8.28! Have had many professionals not believe I didn't have an SLR with some of my pics that I really "set up" to get the good shot (watching lighting and settings). It has really given me a great start to my education for when I can afford a nice SLR. I take primarily action shots too! I'm and Equine photographer (specializing in dressage). (grin) I'd recommend this camera to anyone just starting out! I must say, I won't sell it when I get a real SLR .. cause this one will be a great "second" / spare one to keep around! I use and abuse it unmercifully (at horse shows .. aka dust, rain, cold, hot, humid weather, you name it!) and the dang thing still kicks butt for a point and shoot! Like everyone else .. I wish I could add another lens to it. (sniff) .. ahh well, you can't have it all! Shaana

Bought this camera last year and I have had great shots from it since then.
Some noise in low light but its not a pro camera and if you work on it (the settings) then you can shoot pritty well in low light. over all , I love the camera,

After getting enthusiasm from my late father who was a professional cinematographer and still photographer I have started photography as hobby in late 80s. I have started taking photographs from old Pentax k2000 that I got from my father. Since 1991 I used this camera until I lost it on an airport.

In 2005 when again I have got passion towards photography till that time things have changed substantially in the world of photography. Before purchasing any camera I had two targets in front of me. First I was looking for a learning tool in digital photography that can provide step learning of pro digital cameras and pro digital photography and secondly a reliable brand with not expensive cost.

I have gone through to literature of some popular cameras available on the net where my eyes caught the name Sony.

As being popular in audio and video technology the name itself inspired me. Secondly I have learnt that Sony is a supplier of Image Sensors to some leading camera manufacturers and also they are the pioneer in introducing new image sensor that can sense 4 colours instead of traditional three RGB colours.

Inspired by the facts and its impressive outlook I have at last bought the camera. It had not taken a long time for me to get acquainted with F828 functions. It is a real user friendly camera. It had provided me basic and practical know-how about pro digital cameras and familiarity with pro functions.

One great fact about this camera is a fixed lens that keeps a beginner away from entering into this camera and thus protecting from forming an accidental damage to sensitive internal parts during the process of changing lens or of cleaning image sensor etc. For beginner level the photo quality is fantastic. I have took one and the same shot several times with different camera settings just to learn different affects it causes on the resulting photos. It produces very pleasing results and that was a great fun way of learning techniques of digital camera. Another good point is that this camera is a real tank. Just what any beginner like to have. I took photos in different weather conditions and different travelling environments. I nearly abuse this camera while playing with different settings and settling it on places with abundant of dust or moisture or on very cold or hot surfaces for taking photographs without the help of a tripod. Nothing causes even a slightest change on this camera’s performance and quality. One good alternative of fire cable is a self timer shooting. This is particularly good for taking shots with long exposures where slight action of finger over the shooting knob matters.

This camera is capable of producing great images under certain light conditions but unfortunately it is not capable of handling all light conditions like many of the pro cameras. It is far not a match to a pro camera. I have tried my best to get crispy and sharp images and after playing with camera settings. To a certain extent I have got the results. But that was not the case with all of my photographs. Noise is a big hurdle while wrestling with low light conditions or with fast moving subjects. Sharp and contrast images can be produced only on ISO 64 and ISO 100. Auto White Balance is giving somewhat red hue to the resulting photos. Most of the results are somewhat blurry even with the highest sharpness and contrast values with high shutter speed and f values above 5.

Overall it’s an excellent learning tool for people new to digital photography and best for people who normally like Point and shoot and occasionally get into the camera settings.

Good picture quality. A lot of the setting that you get on a semi pro camera. It would be better if you could change lens on the Camera.

This camera gives digital camera owners the full SLR experience without the need to carry multiple lenses, however, I wish the camera could take more than one lense. Overall performance is on the whole very good, with fast startup times, short shutter release lag and better than average focusing speed.

This was my primary camera for over 2 years, and is now my secondary camera for shoots and events. I have take some Great shots with this camera. The lens is great and the pictures are clear. In full auto is where this camera shines. This is a true Point-&-Shoot camera. It dose have many semi-manual and full manual function, but it really slows down the picture taking process. Lag on this camera is much better then most digital cameras and with practice I was able to lead my shots fairly well. The multi media format is nice plus. Overall, I think this is a great camera for a photography enthusiast.

An impeccable Carl Zeiss lens and amazing auto-focus ability in low-light situations. It is the noise issue on anything photographed over 200 ASA inside with a flash that requires the use of a filter with each image I would love to see Sony correct. Larger CCD please.

I have used my Sony DSC-F828 for about a year now and I am very impressed with it's performace. Although it does not have interchangeable lenses, the 28-200mm f/2 Carl Zeiss zoom lens is extremely versatile and performs very well aside from some purple abberration at certain focal lengths and in certain lighting conditions. The camera is loaded with professional features and I love the rotating camera body.

I've had mine since May, 2005, finally have mastered all the features, had added extra lenses and such and can honestly say that this has to be one of the best priced semi-pro digitals on the market. I had the Cybershot F717 just before this one, loved it and would recommend either to anyone. The F828 has more and better functions, handles easily, the buttons and settings are placed more ergonomically and the photos are fantastic! Next stop, the PRO but I'll hold on to the F828 for personal use and backup. It's truly one of Sony's finest pieces of technology in my book.

I like: - Good colours - Good resolution - Nice lens - Good ergonomics Don't like/ - Too noisy above iso 100, iso 400 / 800 useless - Purple fringing, sometimes very bad - No buffer, slow writing time using raw.

I really enjoy my camera. I am very new to photography, so my favorite thing about this camera is that it is pretty user friendly. It has numerous setting and options that allow you to take any kind of picture. The only trouble I am having is taking pictures indoors. That is problem due to lack of experience rather than the camera capabilities.

Its a great camera for the most part. I get great shots. The downsides are 1. you cant switch lenses 2 the screen does not give a great idea of what the shot is really going to look like

The Sony was the first 8mp on the market. It had considerable noise above ISO 200 and usually had to be used at ISO 50 or 100 for competition photos.Purple fringing was also a problem, albeit minor. In my hands I was always tending to underexpose shots. I had it for a year.

I will only use Sony for my photography. What I like most about my camera is, It survived being thrown from a moving truck at speeds of 45mph+ two times. Not one flaw. There is nothing I don't like about my Sony.

This is a good camera but noisier than the F717. I bought it because of the experience I had with the 717, and the fact that I had a bunch of memory sticks that I did not want to have to get rid of. I have, though, switched over entirely to CF cards and Microdrives so that part does not matter much any more. The camera has the same features but now shoots a little faster and has more space int he buffer than before, 7 vs. 3 shots. As I said, the chip is much noisier. I have to keep it set at ISO 64 or 100 in order to keep a handle on it. Not something I like too much. I can get lower noise levels in colder weather though. The camera is faster, has more ISO settings, the same rotating lens barrel and has a better feel in your hands than the 717. The controls, though, took some getting used to as they moved them around an added a lot more to it. This made the learning curve a little higher. Can't good candid shots if you don't know your equipment too well. Overall, a good camera. I'm still using it but looking forward to the purchase of a D2x. :)

A good overall basic camera for someone who is a hobbist in photography but still wants some of the perks of having a decent video mode and infra-red. The best feature is the rotating body to allow you to get ground level shots without having to lay down in the dirt. The drawbacks for me were the lack of lens attachments, lack of full manual control over the images and the infra-red has a range of a mere 10 feet. Still an overall good camera.

Versatility of the lens is great. Love the swivel feature of the camera body so photographing wildlife lets you look down and not alarm the subject. The new 1GB memory stick gives me adequate capacity. The weight and feel is comfortable and controls easy to work.

I really think this sony f828 syber shot is the all around in it's class best. it can do every thing I need it to do,first the reproduction of true to life color is just wonderful, the all around ease of use is to cool, shooting images in succession is the most, raw mode, the special effects, enlarging aportions of a still shot, you can use three typs of media, memory stick, compact flash, and microdrive and also the carl zeiss lens with T coated to suppress unwanted reflection of light, also the battery life is really really tops, not a lot of camera can even come close to the battery life of the f828 sony I just love this camera ,I sleep with it. the sony f828 is one of the best. for all the features and the way it is construced every one should have one.

Even if you don't feel like learning everything this camera can do it has great presets in auto mode. SO just point and click. P.S. check out the nightframing and nightshot modes. So cool!

The Sony DSC F828 got kind of a bad rap when it was introduced, and at first I was dismayed at the steep learning curve of the F828. But, with a lot of practice I have gotten to a level of competency with this camera so that I have regained my enthusiasm for photography, and I am convinced I picked the right camera for what I want to do in digital photography for the next several years. My previous camera was the Nikon Coolpix 950D, which I loved to death, but at 2.2 Megapixels and 3x optical zoom, it simply wasn't going to take me where I wanted to go. For my money, though, no camera on the market even today takes macro shots as well as the Coolpix 950. But enough of the Nikon, I am here to talk about the Sony. What don't I like about the Sony DSC F828? It is a grainy camera, and at ISO 400 there is an unacceptable amount of grain . But, now that I am aware of this shortcoming, working around it has been fairly easy, with the camera having an ISO setting as low as 64. What do I like about this camera? 2 items top the list: a wonderful Carl Zeiss lens coupled with an 8 megapixel sensor. This is such a winning combination that all the little problems with the camera seem to melt away. But there is more: an extremely solid metal body with rubber grips in all the right places, and a swiveling lens that is so extremely handy it is a wonder it isn't standard with all cameras. The Info-Lithium battery setup is quite slick, letting me know exactly how much battery charge is left. Plus, at full charge there is more than 3 hours of battery life, and it lasts a looong time between charges. No more going through AA batteries like mad, or investing in NiMH rechargables, as the battery is included. The memory setup is nice, accepting both Sony Memory Stick and CompactFlash cards, or a Microdrive in place of the CF card. When one memory card fills up, simply flip a switch and you are off and running on your other card. This camera has a manual zoom, much more similar to traditional film SLRs, and I like it much much better than the little zoom buttons most cameras have nowadays. This camera weighs in at more than 2 pounds, which might be a bit heavy for some, but for me it has a wonderful feel in the hands. It just FEELS right. And last but certainly not least, the pictures I have been getting as of late have been exhilirating for such a novice photographer as myself. With the ability to shoot in .RAW, .JPG, and .TIFF modes, the highest level of detail can be captured. I am currently printing my photos on my Canon i850 photo printer in beautiful, 8 1/2 x 11 borderless prints. Since I work only in digital, my only expense is the cost of the ink and photo paper, which makes it a budget-conscious camera, even though the purchase price might be a bit stiff for some. For me, I feel I got my money's worth, and much more.

There is a slight learning curve (even with Mavica familiarity) but once you learn the camera, the number of things you can do with it are astonishing. Very close to a pro level camera. Great color rendition, 28mm to 200mm (135mm equivalent) WITHOUT needing to change lenses, takes both Compact Flash and Memory Sticks (if you fill up one media, you can switch to the other easily), it's a heavy camera and feels like a "real" camera in your hands, great megapixels and there are a variety of functions to play with. Other than the higher than Mavica learning curve, only one minor complaint. There is a fair amount of camera shake, so if you have problems with something like carpal tunnel and still want to shoot "on the go", you really need to find a spot where the camera is comfortable in your hands and produces less shake. It can be done, it just takes time. If you often use a tripod or have little shake in your hands naturally, it shouldn't be a huge problem.

This camera is the closest I've seen to the pro cameras...under the guise of a "prosumer" camera. Great features...great lens. Unbeleiveable details uner 8MP! I use the pivoting lens more often than I thought. Could be a little better with up close imaging (lens can't quite focus on that stuff) and it's hard to find perfect lenses for this camera because the main lens is permanant. Loads of features, easy to use, but a bit slow writing to memory card, and the images definately could be sharper (the chip is just too small). Excellent optics, however. If you only plan to buy one camera, and no add-ons, this is the camera for you. If you want to spend more money later on, on some lenses and other stuff, go for a nikon or canon SLR. They're way sharper, and you get mor control. The F828 has more features, though.

I use this a lot in the studio. Its OK. Has a lot of features but its definitely a pro-summer camera and not top line professional. It's easy to use and I like it for basic work. I should also say I am pretty new to digital photography so I don't have a lot of experience to base my opinion on.

I have upgraded from a Sony DSC F717 to the F828. The F828 is a bit of a let down due to the Purple Edges within some pictures, Light Shinny objects can become highlighted with purple destoying the end result, this effect can also be seen around the edges of dark subject such as birds with a overcast sky in the background. The use of photoshop CS and such programmes can remove this purple effect but it would take hours to fix more than a few pictures, setting the ISO level to 64 does help as does using a higher aperture. Shooting pictures that you can only get "once in a life time" is not a good idea with this camera "Weddings and so on" because of the purple effects. Noise levels can be a problem at ISO 400 and above, shooting in low light noise increases futher still. In the right conditions this camera gives super reproduction of colours and bring objects and landscapes to life. The auto focus works really well given you loads of options and control over where you focus. The Manual Focus ring works really when taking close ups but, adding a close up len "Sony VCL-M3358" can prove very difficult and add distortion to the final picture. The body design is very good and feel perfect in the hand. High qaulity metal is used to good effect making this camera very strong and robust. If you are thinking of upgrading from the Sony DSC F717 to this camera my advice would be to wait, Sony needs to sort out the problems with the colour "purple edges" first before this camera is truely what Sony says it is. I wish i had waited before i upgraded and handed over my money.

I think this camera has to be one the most underrated, over critisized cameras talked about on the net. This biggest negative is that noise can "sometimes" be an issue as it can with all cameras in this class. The small sensor and ultra sharp Carl Zeiss lens makes it terrific for landscape work. It's ability to do IR is one of the main reasons I bought it initially.

Overall Awesome image quality !!!
Awesome Grip / handling. Very comfortable and secure.
Great features!

Nice "fine" Video quality, although does not work with my 1Gb compact flash card I.

Purple Fringing is one of my pet hates - hopefully Sony can fix this in their next release (the previous F707 and F717 did not have this - although they have a different lens and different Sensor).

It would be great if you could veiw the action whilst taking multiple frames (burst mode) in the one button press, instead you have to guess the framing of a moving subject as the screen is black). Or you can have the camera show each frame just after you have captured them. Still a little tricky to follow though.

A longer than 30 sec shutter speed would be great.

It would be great if raw images could write considerably quicker.

Remember to remove the lens hood when using flash indoors or you get a shadow. Or zoom to x 1.5.

I chose this camera over the Canon Digital Rebel mainly for its superior glass. (The F828 has a permanently attached Carl Zeiss 28-200mm eq. lens.) I have enjoyed using it and definitely still prefer its lens to anything Canon puts out. That being said, I must admit that I have been less than impressed with some of the features' designs. For example, the shooting modes are on the same dial with playback and setup. In other words, there's not shutter release priority with this camera. Still, I enjoy the vivid images it helps me create! I think Sony makes a fine CCD, but they probably stretched it a bit cramming 8mp onto an 8.8mm surface! My next acquisition is going to be a Nikon D70, whose CCD, by the way, is also produced by Sony. I'll be happy with the Nikon glass, I'm sure, but I'd be ecstatic if I could somehow find a Zeiss lens for the D70!

The quality of the lens anthe the camera is superb !! The pictures are clear and crisp and the colors are very real. But It has a problem when you take pictures in its maxim resolution (8 MP) the problem is that the image looks pixelated and is not as clear as in 5 MP.

I am just getting started and this camera is only about 1 year old. So far I have had good luck with it and I really enjoy shooting digital. I also absolutely love the things that I can do with the images on may computer. Hopefully someday I will be as great as some of the photographers that post their photos on this site.

This is not a camera for the beginer, but a AWSOME upgrade. Fastest shutter speed in the industry, Zoom is FAST, and 8MP is a great amount of picture to be able to work with. The ONLY downside is the size of the camera, but I would trade the size for quality any day... LOVE the camera!

I have been shooting happily with my new camera. There are a few new "bells and whistles" to get used to. The 8 megapixels makes a clear photo. When needing to crop and zoom in while in photoshop the clear quality is amazing.

I like the overall feel and usability of the camera. I especially like the swivel body and the fact that you can use a CF card or memory stick. The only thing I don't care for is the small amount of noise in low light situations.

With 8 Megapixel and a 7X optical zoom lens you really can't complain. The menu is very simple and gives the photographer many settings. Cool camera ... maybe a bit to heavy, but takes realyl good shots! :o)

This camera is very easy to use and produces very crisp, clear, high quality images that would rival any top of the line camera. It has a 4 color Super HADCCD which captures true to life color. My only wish is that it had more pre-set scene modes.

I have owned my F828 for six months now.
Having previously been a point and shoot photographer, this was a quantum leap for me!
The F828 is great for point and shoot photos, really, I havn't had many pics that I have had to delete. The wide range of manual controls, however, make this a great choice for novice photographers who want to try 'proper photography' with different exposure and shutter settings but also have the covenience of point and shoot when they need it.As I am fairly inexperienced with manual control photography, I cannot give an expert review, but can tell you that the F828 really helps to get those creative juices flowing with confidence and without waiting days to see your results. I love it! I may love another digital SLR's features more if I owned one, but I don't so the F828 will keep me happy for a long time yet.

MIXED FEELINGS

This camera is capable of delivering excellent results. It has some very clever features, such as the swivel back or the nightframing mode, just to name a few.

But there are some drawbacks as well. First, it's the too long time it needs for storing a RAW or TIFF picture (c'mon, about 15 seconds is much too long, isn't it?). Then I'm really annoyed by the built-in flash, which is being shaded by the lens in wide angle mode, resulting in distracting shadows in the lower parts of the pictures. Obviously, this is even worse having the lens shade mounted. This makes the flash barely unusable except for some tele shots.

All in all I'm a bit disappointed, especially considering the price.

A very high quality compact, in my opinion the best in its class by a long way. 10/10 for vfm 9/10 overall.

Build quality is excellent, and the range of features more than adequate. Although there are some very good digital SLR's close to the price range of the 828, the best option for me is to use a far more expensive digital SLR and utilise this in other situations. When I want high quality results without the need to travel with a full kit, this is my choice every time.

If you can get images suitable for national newspapers and magazines, it should be more than good enough for 99% of users. Performance is top class, and critics should take a look at themselves - it's a poor craftsman that blames his tools !

To rate it as 1 out of 10 (As one reviewer did) is plainly ludicrous. If it is so unsuitable, they simply made an uneducated choice and are blaming the equipment for their own failings.

I write this somewhat negative review with great sadness, because this is my third Sony camera in a row. It's always a bit of a learning curve, but I love the feel and ease of handling the controls. And so far I loved the results. I upgraded from the F-717 to the F-828 because I wanted to be able to shoot in RAW format, then work the pictures in Photoshop CS for my large display prints. Unfortunately I missed the product return deadline, figuring I must be doing something wrong, because I could not bring the camera icon into view on the Mac desktop. Eventually I managed to get the images transferred with a Lexar CompactFlash Reader. Still, imagine my surprise when I found out that NOBODY at Sony support even works with a Mac. They were all very nice and tried to be helpful, but in the end I am right back where I left off with the F-717. The fact that the F-828 is fully Mac OS compatible is a hoax. I wish Sony would come out and say so. In fairness I must say that if RAW format is not an issue it does turn out to be a pretty decent camera. The sad part is that I was sitting on the fence for weeks, trying to decide between the fixed lens F-828 and the interchangeable lens Canon EOS 10D. I clearly made the wrong choice.

After owing 3 junk digital cameras, this sure is a FAR cry from what we had. Great so far, lots more yet to learn and program on it. The only complaint at the moment would be that it does not have a B&W feature, rather only a sepia.

All in all the camera is average. The color is good but there are some flaws either with the lens or the image sensor producing aberration/purple fringing. There is also a severe noise issue when working with higher ISO settings. The control layout is excellent and the night shot/framing feature is nice. This camera will be used as a play camera. The quality is not consistent as with my Canon EOS 300d and 1D Mrk II.

Good: Eight megapixel sensor delivers a clear resolution New RGBE four color CCD delivers more pleasing color balance Big and very fast seven times optical zoom lens which starts at a wide 28 mm Fast operation, very fast startup, auto focus and short shutter release lag Program AE has "program shift" Histogram display in live view RAW file format High resolution EVF (can switch to night framing in low light) Fast camera to computer transfers thanks to USB 2.0 Excellent battery life Bad: Too much noise on high shutter speed Barrel distortion at wide angle, Difficult to get good macro performance without barrel distortion

I'm so new at photography I think most of my problems come from my inexperience rather than the camera. My only complaint is that I don't get enough zoom from the built-in zoom lens. I want to photograph birds but can't get close enough.

very good housing, long battery life, 8megpix 4 color ccd, real colors, fast, 7x opt zoom are the pros, chromatic aberration and noise above 100 ASA are the cons. but if you know how to use it, you can produce great results.

THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA FOR ALMOST ANY SITUATION. I USE IT FOR BUSINESS AND PLEASURE. THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS THE HARSH ANGLES I GET WHEN USING THE WIDE ANGLE FOCUS, BUT I'M SURE THATS WITH ALL WIDE ANGLE FOCUS DIGITAL LENSES. THE COLOR RANGE IS SUPERIOR TO THE DSC 717, WHICH IS HARD TO COMPETE WITH. THE OPERATION OF THE SETTINGS AND FOCUS ADJUSTMENTS IS WITHIN EASY FINGER RANGE. THIS CAMERA ALSO PROCESSES FASTER SO I CAN CHECK MY WORK AND RE-TAKE ANOTHER PICTURE IF NECESSARY.

The Sony DSC-F828 is a fine fixed lens digital camera capable of some incredibly sharp images. The build quality is second only to the professional Canon EOS series DSLRs, and the Zeiss lens is excellent, with the small caveat of some Chromatic Aberration in certain high-contrast, backlit situations. All in all, and excellent camera, although not quite as extensive user controls as in the KonicaMinolta A2.

I absolutely love this camera, even though I do not yet know how to use every function on it. I'm still new to photography, but it has both flexibility and configurable options as well as a handy 'point and shoot' mode, tons of supplemental hardware support, etc. The one bad thing that could be said is that it does not have a replaceable lens. You can always add a telephoto or zoom lens to the end of the one it has, but if you scratch the built-in lens, you're out of luck.

This is my second posting, because good just keeps getting better. While 7x optical zoom is good, I just couldn't leave well enough alone. The arsenal now includes an Olympus TCON-14b teleconverter, whose stellar optic quality is more than a match for the Carl Zeiss lens. An F828 with 10.14x magnification is quite handy to have, especially on the coast or at Yosemite.

Overall Great Camera. With this camera, photos taken in RAW mode are slow. So with this camera, I perfer to take in JPEG. It is extremely user friendly once you figure out where all the buttons are.

I just bought the camera and I am really happy with the camera ......there is a purple fringe that does occur but that is easily fixed in photoshop........just use your hue and saturation setting and use the magenta to adjust that and you have no purple.......sweet

I really like the camera its alot faster then my old sony....dsc s70....highly recommended.....

I like this camera better than I thought I would, because of prior mixed reviews. It does have some of the flaws (purple fringing, more noise than the 717) but it also has some strengths that make up for the lacks (a much faster focus to shutter release, more zoom, better shallow depth of field control, better color and contrast control, RAW format, live histogram, etc., etc.). Overall, I'm actually very pleased with this camera and have enjoyed using it so far!

Beautiful color, crisp images. Handles great, well-balanced, intuitive controls. Fantastic 28-200mm equivalent Leica zoom lens. As has been reviewed extensively, images do become somewhat noisy at ISO 400 and higher, but generally I have not found this to be a problem. I have yet to encounter discernible chromatic aberration.

Many people have mixed opinions about the camera, some have disappointments from the 707 and 717. Mainly purple fringing in bright lights. I have not found this to be a problem. Having the wide/telephoto lens is a joy.

The F-828 is my first digital camera, and it takes amazingly sharp pictures. My local Costco has made 12"x16" prints from a 400ppi Noritsu QSS2901 printer that are razor sharp! The 4-color CCD does seem to provide better color information to the processor. One aspect in particular is eye detail...photos of my children and prople in general, the color variation and detail of the eye is amazing. The 7x Zeiss lens offers everything you would need, unless you are devoted to an SLR and heavy bag full of lenses!
There are some noise issues above ISO200, but Neat Image can fix the noise and the basic version is a free download from http://www.neatimage.com.
The deluxe version has a plug-in so it works in Photoshop and several other programs. There are some issues with "purple fringing" (CCD blooming or Chromic Aberrations....take your pick). There are easy fixes and hard fixes (i.e.: beaucoup Cloning tool) in Photoshop to get rid of the purple. One of the best features of this camera is not being stuck using the expensive "memory stick" media. Sure, it will take memory stick, but it also has a Compact Flash interface for CF cards or MicroDrive. The F828 battery has a lot of endurance for such a high quality camera. The Sony RAW conversion software sucks, but now Adobe Camera RAW supports the F828....woohoo. The Adobe converter is awesome from what I hear. I am very happy with this cam, now I just need to learn more from the masters of digital photography!

This camera does alright at 64 ISO, but once you get above that setting you start to get "noise" to the point the photograph is useless. It does have very good and easy to use features. The lens is very high quality. When taking photographs in the TIFF or RAW setting it takes a little longer to record the image than I would like to see. For the price of the camera, I would recommend a digital SLR. After purchasing this camera and trying it out for a week, its going back to the store. I was for the most part disappointed.

My camera..what to say about my camera? In the year of 2002, for Christmas, my parents took me to a million stores and we tried to look for JUST THE RIGHT camera. I finally found it. I knew I wanted a Sony one, and I knew it had to be digital, but this camera does so much more. The only thing I didn't like about the camera when I got it, was that it wasn't really mine until December 25, Christmas day when I got to officially call it mine. Ever since then it has been glued to the palm of my hand. It is a Video camera with a printer connected to it and a still photo shooter. It has endless possibilities! And that's what I love about it.
