The EOS D30 Digital SLR Camera

Even though it has since been usurped by the D60 and the 10D, I have never regretted buying this camera. The simple fact is that I have enjoyed using this fantastic digital camera more than any other.

If you are a Canon shooter and want to upgrade to a professional level digital SLR with many creative options, check this camera out or look into the more recent models in Canon's digital SLR line.

Very good intermediate camera...meaning it's not a digital Rebel, not is it a FF (full frame) pro camera. It is a 1.6 crop camera and quite good at what it does. It is not heavy like the full frame camera and I love that. However, viewing the LCD screen in sunlight is almost impossible, and since I live in a usually very sunny location, shooting an outdoor wedding and quickly checking my shots can be quite a challenge. Other than that it's very good.

Upgraded from Canon 350D last year, and I love it. Very easy to use, love the thumb wheel. Take time to read the manual and find out what this camera can do, it's awesome! Please can BP change it from being a D30, to a 30D, which is, I think what we're all talking about. The D30 was from looooooooong ago.

30 D is a fabulous camera, fast efficient out standing image quality.
I used as primary my back up is 20D. Both sharing some of the same futures but 5Dís large LCD, spot metering, 100.000 shutter actuations better focus canít be beat,
I use the 5D for a week or so and I feel much exited because all my investment is on the L series 2.8ís no third party this way I know there is no cheating with my passion.
If you like you can check my work; I will post some of 30D soon.
Regards,
Harry

This camera is great.

I don't understand how people can rate the camera as a 2 out of 5 and then say that it is too dark through the lens or that it doesn't have enough zoom.

Hello, you are rating an SLR camera...the camera doesn't have any zoom...and it's dark because it has a cap on. Take the cap off and put a good lens on and you'll be fine.

Buy the camera....it's great!

Though not my first digital camera, it is my first digital SLR. I am coming from a Canon 7e, so I expect the same type of performance technically - along with the ability to use lenses I have purchased over the years. What I did not expect was all of the control through programming like variation of settings for White Balance and simple things like "back lighting" the control panel. Not to knock other manufacturers, but I have stuck with canon for it's obvious ability to deliver quality products as a less than reasonable price. As always, the price is worth it! Canon continues to remain a very formidable cometitor to those dedicated to a given "camp."

This was my first Digital SLR that had interchangeable lenses. I really liked it however it has been replaced with a 10D which has higher megapixles and more importantly more auto-focus sensors. The only complaint I had about the D30 was that it was sometimes slow to auto-focus and this caused me to miss lots of action shots.

from Fuji Finepix S5000 it's a good step forward but 3,5Mpx is not enough when you start doing a not-only-holiday photography. I like its ergonomy and dimensions. You can feel you're keeping a camera in your hand.

I really like the D30. It takes great pictures. I've only had it a little while, but I'm impressed with it. It's really easy to use, so that's a plus. I was able to start shooting immediately and I love the what I've taken. I'm looking forward to enlarging some of my work and hanging it on the wall

I bought the EOS D30 in 2004. I wanted to use the advantages of a digital SLR system, but i was not willing to pay more than 500 US$ at a time, when prices of new cameras go down on a mounthly basis. I felt it is wiser to invest in glass, until the market gets consolidated. My tight budget ment a sacrifice: 3 MP in a SLR body at a time when 6 MP became a standard for most point-and-shoot models. Nevertheless, I have not regretted the purchase a single moment. This camera has helped me to understand the techniques of digital SLR shooting. I have learned more than I expected, and I am happy with some of the results. I have never been such a technocrat, so the 3 MP are not a huge problem. Among the many factors, that contribute towards the artistic effectivness of a photograph, the number of pixel is, at least in my view, secondary.

Its a great camera, has some trouble holding focus when taking a few shots right in a row. I am used to Nikon film cameras, so i am more comfortable with that format, but if your a first time cannon user, they are very easy to get used to.

This was the first digital camera which I could use my canon lenses on, and was the reason I purchased it. My main usage is for yachting photographs and it has been good for that. Waterproofness could be improved and a higher pixel count would be desired, together with a lens that can be used in wide angle situations. I believe the newer EOS 20D with the new lens could be a desirable change.

As a "starter" DSLR, the D30 was excellent, given the time it was released. Great images, full of features and rugged, the 3.2MPix body was a great step over the best point-and-shoots. I had mine for almost 2 years, and just recently upgraded to the 10D. Many pix in my online albums are from this body.

Great entry level SLR camera to digital for owners of previous Canon Eos cameras and lenses. Image quality is excellent and I regularly print to A3 on Epson 1290 printer. Autofocus lets this camera down. I will invest in a 10D soon but I will try to keep my D30 as back up.

The D30 Camera I have used mostly in the past. It has given me good shots although lower in pixel value compared to the 10D newer version. The body looks basically the same as the 10D, but is not made with the stronger material that the 10D has. It is a camera I will keep using as a back up on all my photo adventures.

It is OK. The thing I don't like about the camera the most is using it in low light. It's not very good in low light.

Also, I have produced some great pictures but a step up in megapixels would make them better. Canon has come a long way since I purchased this camera and I am looking towards the big 10+ megapixel range next.

Canon EOS D30 when it was first delivered is a wonderful amateur to professional SLR camera and shoots and feel like it analog counter-part. After having been used to many of Canon's analog SLR such as EOS 1VHS and EOS 3 picking up EOS D30 feels like home. EOS D30 system is similar to EOS ELAN and EOS A2 or 5Q series. The control buttons and parameters dials are laid out the same with same functionalities as on the analog version. The added extra buttons is for controlling the digital data such as changing shooting mode parameter (RAW or JPEG), ISO, LCD Brightness, Formating CF card, and others. The metering system is as good or better than its ELAN and A2e system. The exposure on the D30 is pretty accurate and handles un-expected lighting conditions very well. The minor draw back to the D30 is the focusing system. It is very slow and only works well under daylight condition. Sunset or night time requires good source of light for D30 to focus or get ready to switch to manual. The autofocus assits light is not as effective when compare to its analog counter-part. Overall 9/10 rating for this camera and recommend over any other SLR digital out there.

The Canon D30 was one of the "break-through" DSLR cameras and now a bit outdated it still allows me to make beautiful images. After forty plus years of film photography this digital camera has sparked my creative spirit to new higns. It gives me the ability to control the entire photo process from exposure to presentation with instant feed-back. This is a great camera.

Romans review is right on. Another method for better low light focusing is to buy the faster lenses rather than the IS lenses. It also has the same problem as the D60 with the 550EX flash as needing to be custom balenced for ISO ratings, as it also needs to be done with soft (umbrella type) lighting. Although it has a smaller pixel count than my Olympus E-10 it makes much better prints due to the CMOS chip insted of a CCD. Have made 30x40's using Genuine Fractals.

I paid $3000+ for this camera and will be selling it for $1200..but only to a good, approved home. I hope it is okay to put this info here! If you want more info (or want to see photos taken with the D30) go to www.dianesphotos.com email me for the codes. Thanks Diane

Before you read my review please know that this is my first Digital SLR camera. However this is not my first SLR camera nor is it my first digital camera. So that being said...

I think the EOS D30 is a great camera. I have successfully enlarged prints to 16"x20" and have been really happy with the results. The images this camera produces are very clear, crisp and noise is hardly an issue until you start using ISO 800 and above.

The camera is also capable of Infrared Photography (unlike the newer D60 which has a hot-mirror which lessens the amount of infrared light).

Other camera strengths include:
* Ability to take CF type I and II cards (so you can use a Microdrive)
* Ability to use all of Canon's EF lenses and accessories
* Sturdy feel of the body
* ISO range from 100 to 1600
* Virtually no-noise image.
* Battery life is great - the manual says up to 400 exposures on a full charge but I only got about 200 but that's still a lot cause I used flash quite a bit and I reviewed quite often.

Some weaknesses of the camera I should point out are:

* Autofocus hunts quite a lot in Low-light situations (this can be remedied by choosing only the centre focus point for focus but its still hunts more than my EOS 300 ever did)

* Auto White Balance is not something I would trust. I usually choose a white balance setting or Custom White Balance.

* Built in flash is a bit weak (but then again so are most in-built flashes).

* The low-light focus light is a white light and isn't really very effective.

Overall I think this camera is great and that Canon gave it weaknesses so people would still but the 1D.

I should also mention the 1.6x multiplier. For reasons I won't go into right now - The D30 has a built in 1.6x multiplier. This means that the effective focal length of your lenses gets multiplied by 1.6x. This is a double edged sword. My 20mm lens suddenly became a 32mm lens which is something I'm not excited about. But my 300mm lens suddenly became a 480mm lens which is something I really liked :)

I bought this camera about 1 week after the D60 was released and I got it for about $3000 Australian dollars (which is about $1500 US I beleive) brand new.

Overall if you're thinking of going digital I do highly suggest that you consider this camera as its quite cheap now (compared to what it used to be). You won't be disappointed...this is the kind of camera that will entice you to take days off work just so you can go out and take photos.
