My Epson 1650 is also a photo scanner, but there are two models. The perfection 1650, and mine the perfection 1650 Photo. As of yet, I don't know of any scanner on the market that will scan 4x5 negs, but this one does a beautiful job of scanning both color and black and white negs. And the software is great. Before you even scan it, you can view the picture and or the whole row of pictures, your choice, and adjust the exposure, gamma, shadows, highlights, color and levels- and it allows you to save the settings you chose. It gives you a great headstart before it opens up in Photoshop. I'm on XP- which is a crazy system that is on all new computers, but it works perfectly fine with it.

It also does transparency, and because of the size available for neg scanning, I've been able to scan 6x6 120mm as well. It has an unsharp mask, resolution settings and resizes images very crisply. It doesn't damage the color too much- in fact, I've noticed it's quite true to the color I'll see on the proof sheets- it stays true to what's on the neg. So if the scan is off from your print, then it's because the lab or you adjusted the print to make it look better.

It does of course have a flatbed, but in negative scanning mode the light box is big enough for the negative carrier, so my only problem with this is that if I want to scan 4x5, I have to scan two sides seperately and put it all together in photoshop. But for $200- and I believe they've gotten cheaper now- this is one of the best out there for the value.
