This lens is impressively sharp even wide open. Its bokeh (out of focus characteristics) is amazing - gradual and fast defocus, smooth colors, highlights are round, you don't see the diaphragm blades, perfect. Tones, specially skin tones, are also worth every cent it costs. My best Nikkor by far, and not that the others are not VERY good - 24/2.8 AIS, 50/1.4 AI, 180/2.8 ED AIS, 300/4.5 EDIF AI - but this clearly belongs to a higher level. I love this focal range and this lens made me forget the 105/1.8 I had before.
I use it manual focus only - my cameras are two F2 (A, AS) and an F3. It's big but balances very well with these bodies and although MF isn't AIS standard (no AF lens will ever be) it has a very good feeling and strong, solid construction. If you depend or love portraits, this is the lens to have.
