I owned this lens for about 20 hours. Bought it at about 4pm and returned it the next day at lunch. Too damn noisy!!!!

Image quality seemed great (didn't really play too much).. 1:1 true Macro was excellent! Comes with a Lens Hood also great! and was about $250 cheaper than the Canon 100mm Macro after adding the hood to it.

However, it's so nosey I took it back. The canon is USM (very quiet) and honestly it was bad in store but at home, when there is very little ambient noise the thing will wake the baby next door. Ok, a bit harsh, but way to loud for me.

I cannot imagine hand-feeding a chipmonk and trying to focus this thing.. the critter will surly run a way..

That being said... Flowers and most insects don't have ears!!

I love this lens. It is a true 1:1 macro lens that takes photographs that are comparable with models twice its price.
The AF is very fast, but I prefer to use the MF mode when doing my close-up work. The nice feature with this lens is that you can control AF/MF from either the camera or the lens itself.
This lens is very versatile and should please both professional and amatures alike with its ease of operation.
The only reason I did not give this lens a perfect rating is because it is not compatible with Sigmas 1.4 or 2x teleconvertors. In some instances I would like to be able to shoot my subjects from a longer range but don't want to carry or pay for a longer macro lens.
I would still however recommend this lens to anyone looking to get into macro photography or that is looking for a good fixed focal length portrait lens.
