I really like this camera, it has a lot of options on it, but not so many that I get lost in them! I like the zoom, burst 3, picture effects and light settings. Sometimes, I don't like the larger size.

This is a nice camera. I've had it for a few years now. It's an excellent all around camera for starting out or just normal point and shoot. The macro feature works real nice too. I'm in the process of upgrading to the Canon EOS 30D (Or 20D, I still can't decide). Giving me tremendous improvement in quality and greater flexibility.

Canon PowerShot S40 - Small size convenient to keep with me always. Image quality is OK and I like the image controls available. The 5-way toggle switch is its weakest feature and it is worse after 5 years of use.
Sony dsc-F717 - Better focusing system than the Canon PowerShot S40 and a superior lens. Whilst all the controls on the Sony continue to work well, it is heavier and pysically much larger than the Canon and the image controls are not as comprehensive as those on the Canon.

I have had wonderful success with this camera. The Sony DSC-F717 was and still is my first venture into digital photography. I am planning on upgrading very soon, but this has been a wonderful camera for me. I have taken it all over the world with me and never had one problem with it. I love the ability to be fully automatic, or to adjust parameters as desired. The Carl Zeiss lens has been phoenominal. I can distinctly see the difference between the quality of my photos versus a friend with a comparable camera. I also have a few filters which I use on a regualr basis. The ability to switch or add filters on the fly so easily is great. This camera has been a trooper and I plan on putting it out of my daily rotation soon, but definitely still hanging onto it.

Easy to use, good for a beginner. Slow camera. Lots of noise in the photos, even at ISO 100. Higher ISOs almost unreasonable. Sharpness issues. Can produce good images for its price but is nowhere near DSLR quality.

this camera has proven itself to be a user friendly workaholic. all controls are readily accessable, the optical zoom lens sharp and clear and it affords me crisp color perfect images from landscapes, portraits and macro that stand up to the higher priced professional comeras out there. I like the balance of the extended lens for low light slower speed shots that allows me to hold it steady sans a tripod and offers me more flexibility in positioning and composition. I prefer this camera to the new 828 sony offers due to the ergonomic location of the controls and user friendly status for all skill levels of the photographer involved. buy this, you will like it.

The Sony is a great EVF camera. It boots up slowly, it has a substantial delay when shooting, it doesn't accept alternate lenses and you have to use the very-proprietary Sony Media Stick. All that accepted, I love it. It's a great camera if you aren't into cameras and want to take great pictures. I AM into cameras but I can't bring myself to sell this one. I still love it. It's light, easy to use, good viewing screen.

This camera has proven to very flexible and user friendly. I have literally shot thousands of photographs with this camera. I love the "slow shutter" for long exposures and of course the lens is fantastic.
I would like to see a raw format in the next generation camera. I have also noticed some color balance issues, especially with flesh tones and the tendency for the color red to "bloom".

Great camera, but if you are used to the larger SLR cameras, the body on this one is more compact. It's really personal preference and will grow on you once you get used to it. The one complaint I would have is about the finish on the camaera. The black finish is made of some sort of composite material that marks up really easy. You can usually just rub your thumb across it and get most marks out, but is really a little frustrating keeping it from being marked up. The D20 (which I do not own) has a nice rubber grip around the hand areas to make it much easier to hold and not mark up as easily. I have only had the XT a few months but love the camera. It takes great shots even though I have a lot to learn in operating and getting the proper focus, shutter speed and apeture to achieve the kind of shots I want. I would recommend this camera as a starting point for a great first pro-sumer camera.

I really enjoy my F717, it's a very good and cost effective pro-sumer camera which I would recommend to anybody looking to get into photography. The downside of it is the lack of lenses, but I have found some very nice ones from Raynox which work pretty well and give some very nice images. The color representation is spectacular, and it is great for taking low light shots if you have a tripod. See some of my Fireworks shots, all taken at between ISO 100 and 400, with no visible grainyness.

This is a great camera. The only real drawbacks to it that I have seen are the long exposures in night mode, something that SONY says keeps you from seeing through people's clothing, and the slow shooting. Generally it can shoot about one frame per second in non-bust modes and up to 2.2 frames per second in burst and bracketing modes. I like to photograph animals some of the time and the slowed pace can be a real irritant. The pivoting lens barrel is great when doing architectural photography, especially up close to a structure. And the files are fairly clean. The CCD is definitely noisier than and CMOS or Nikon's DX chips but I am able to get clean 20 x 30 inch prints from the files I obtain from it.

My camera works very well in all modes and applications. Even though I don't use the digital zoom, it would come in handy for the casual photographer. Color is very good, but in some (few) cases I still have to do some slight corrections in Photoshop 7. I am going to buy a Cybershot DSC F-828 soon, due to needing at least 8 MP's for my lithograph collection, but I will keep the 717 with me nontheless. Thanks for letting share my work on your website!

I love my camera. It was a gift from my husband because he know I wanted to go professional. It has the capability to take great shots. Now here are the cons. Sometimes the saturation is too high. There is a lag time between shots, especially when the flash is used. And last, it is a bit balky. But hey, all cameras have pros and cons and my Sony doesn't have any problems I can't work around. At least I haven't found any yet!

I just upgraded from a Rebel to the 20D. It is better than the Rebel in every respect. The only thing about the rebel I miss is the small LCD on the back that shows shooting settings. This has moved to the top on the 20D.

I love this camera because it easy to use and has lots of options. I am embarrased to admit it but I always feel like I am a "serious" photographer carrying it! The only thing I don't completly love is the software. I had better software with my old fuji. Maybe I just don't have to full grasp of it but I feel it is doesn't have as much options.

Great camera! If there was anything I'd change about it, which I really don't, I'd have the lens capable of interchangeability. The pictures are crisp, the camera's easy to use, and most of all, it looks soooo coooool. You gotta admit, it really does.

This camera is amazing! While it takes awesome pictures using auto settings, it has manual settings an accessories that truly beef it up. The coloring is awesome, close-ups using the macro mode are awesome...it is hard to take a bad picture with this camera. I recently bought the wide conversion lens which enhances everything the camera does...While Sony can be expensive, I've been very pleased with the product. In fact, I thought about upgrading to a 8mp, but after reading reviews, I knew I wasn't going to be happy with anything other than my f717.

I love both cameras, but my options are limited with the Fuji FinePix 2800Z. The Fuji excel when shooting Macros and proved itself to be far superior to the Sony. However there are no accessories for the Fuji, but accessories are abundant for the Sony DSC-F717.

This camera is great for snap shot style photography or if you never need to change lenses to get the effect you are looking for. This Sony is Rugged as well. I personally would prefer a format that allows for interchangable lenses and will be trading up to that style camera soon.

The Sony DSC717 is a super digital camera. The macro shot are remarkbly clear and you can get about three inches from the subject. It's not fast in focusing but take the best pictures I have seen around. It's was a little pricey when it first came out. I didn't like the fixed lens on it, but it did have a good zoom.

Very fast camera - ready to take pictures within a few seconds of turning it on, with the ability to take pictures every second or so thereafter provided you're not using the flash.
Has a manual zoom ring similar to a film camera; extremely intuitive and much better then pressing small buttons to zoom.
High quality Carl Zeiss lens, fairly fast lens.

My Sony Cyber-Shot F717 and my new F828 is the best Digital Camera with its extensive feature selection, quick change format and range of add-ons.
It is for this reason I upgraded my choice of camers from the F717 to the new F828.

This camera has more features than a street full of faces at Mardi Gras! The 717 is fast, accurate and full of fun. I especially like the swivel feature, low light mode, continuous video and of course the Carl Zeis lens with its 10x Zoom and convenient placement to the left of center which makes for easy handling. All the buttons are in the right place and it is a great convenience to be able to zoom in on an image file to check its sharpness or crop a shot and record the edited version from the original while it's still in the camera. It works beautifully at night and takes some spectacular pictures in very low light situations. That's aside from the Night Shot mode which digitally imitates infrared exposures. It's packed with fun and convenient features which accomodate both professional and amature skills.

The camera's strong point is its Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens. It creates fantastic pictures but not quite as smooth as a DSLR which is what I want ultimately.

Good camera, user friendly.
Downside:
Lens not interchangeable.
Small shutter lag.
Only 5 megapixels.
High Resolution is slow to transfer to media.
Not fast enough for action.

This camera is versitle, and the zoom is fabulous. I purchased this one because it was the only one on the market at the time with nightvision - which I needed for night time Fires and MVA's. It works great. The video is great also.

The Cybershot is a fun camera. My old camera is a Minolta 35mm. Digital photography is great. The camera affords me many options from shooting still images to movies. The special effects options are interesting. Sound, lighting techniques editing etc. Picture resolution is superb. I also enjoy the NightShot, NightFraming options. However the camera shot speed issue is something I am working to overcome. I'm anticipating the image, in order to avoid blurry pics or missing the shot completely. Am looking forward to buying and learning to work with Photoshop software. Digital Photography is a "control freaks" dream come true!

The Sony F-717 - I find to be a very versital tool in the realm of Semi-Pro level of Photography. I particularly enjoy the ablity to go to the "Total" Manual mode -- This enables me to be THE Photographer in the making of a photograph - not simply turning the camera on and letting IT do the work that I love to do.

I really can't give you a real rating, due to my lack of knowledge of digital photography. But, from my somewhat general knowledge I believe with most digital cameras you get what you pay for. My pictures have been fantastic. I want to learn much more. When you get great results out of the box without much experience, you will want to learn more. Basically, it is hard to mess up. The more pictures you take the better you get. Besides, no film...

Compared with high end SLRs/D-SLRs It's lacking, but compared with other things in it's price range it's a 9 or a 10. My only complaint is the lack of a faster shutter speed. Most cameras in it's range get a 1/2000, it's max is 1/1000.

Takes great pictures. Easy to use. Great Zoom! Only thing I don't like is too many flashes before taking picture......even if the red-eye reduction is turned off. When trying to take pictures of babies or children with such lovable, spontaneous actions it's hard to catch the moment you want. I've just recently bought this camera and am still learning with a digital. This is my first one.

The quality is Great! The ease of use is good. The zoom is Great! The red-eye reduction feature has too many flashes. When taking photos of small children and their expresions, you miss them. When the feature is turned off, there are still too many flashes. I wish the features were in a more compact camera. I would like a smaller size. I still haven't used all the features. It's fairly new to me. My first digital.

Other than going to a digital SLR, I feel the Sony f717 is about as good as one could use to get nice professional results. One of the biggest advantages I have found is you see what the lens is seeing which is such a big plus when focusing, using various lenses, or checking proper lighting. My previous digital didn't have that feature. It has excellent macro capabilities as well as taking great closeups.

The camera does take remarkable pictures considering everything. Very clear and precise. Still, the controlls are scattered and unless you study the book you can get lost in it all, including unnecessary settings in Infrared and night pictures (unless you like that stuff). Battery life is exceptional and graphs, settings and adjustables can be shown on either screen. Still I think this is an excellent camera and would put it above average for its category. The DSC 828 should be a hoot.

This is really a great camera, there is so much it can do sometimes it is a little overwelming. We have really loved all the pictures we take with it when they come out, the one major problem we have had with it is that we have trouble with the focus. Usually about half of our pictures are out of focus and it is frustrating, but at this point we are still learning about the camera so we are unsure if this is something we are doing wrong or if the camera is not working properly. Over all though, we have really loved using it!

I love this camera. I started with a 3.0 megapix digital. Then I went to a Nikon. I returned to a better sony 5.0 with true to life photographs. I love the ease of use and the many options it has for me to take any type of picture. The value has remained the same for over a year. Great buy - I am glad I made the choice.

I purchased the camera with the intention of using it to learn about photography, and for use in taking family snapshots and vacation photos. It is my first digital camera, and the first camera on which I am making use of the manual controls. (About 20-25 years ago I occasionally used cameras with controls, but never learned about them.)
I selected it based on control features, zoom capability (wanted >3x), reviews in the literature, and price.
I am happy with the instant feedback of a digital, with the overall quality of the photos. I find the pictures a bit on the red side, and at times wish I had the ability to extend the lens.

Macro shoot are so crisp and couldn't be better. The fact that you can't interchange the lenses are unfortunate, as are the lack of lenses that you can add to it. Very good for shooting sports, would have liked to see continuous shooting past 3 shots. Starting to use the video feature which at high quality works very nicely. http://photos.ajg.net/Justin -check out my photos there

I love that I can take beautiful photos with this camera. It's easy to use, a lot of manual settings but works well with auto settings as well.
I do not like the shape and bulkiness of the camera. It is not a DSLR but is extremely bulky and shaped kind of odd. I am always taking photos 1-4 degrees off and have to fix them. I have read others have had this problem as well.

I like the Cybershot F717 from the first day i bought it i.e. 1 year back. Since then i have taken more than 5000 snaps from it and i have been satisfied with the results to a very great extent. I like the color capturing, 10X Zoom, Body and style, Grip and specially its Auto modes which are tooooo perfect thus leaving me no room to use the camera in Manual Modes. I am waiting for its new model expected in Jan 2004 the Cybershot F828. I have add on lenses like Teleconverter and Wide Angle plus a Remote Controlled Tripod and some Add-On 58mm filters. Specially my choice of getting the Sony Hot Shoe Add on Bounce Flash was a perfect decision as it gives me great exposures in Indoor.

The Sony F717 is a second in the series from Sony. This camera is also my second , I had the F707 before.
The camera is extremely easy to use for both Novice and advanced digital user. The 4x zoom is true optical and wonderfully clear without diluting the quality of the image.
The camera has a laser assisted light metering system which is invaluable in low light situations. I find it is better for those interior dark shots than my Digital SLR and focuses faster and more accurately . It has some manual features allowing the user to explore their creative side. The biggest draw back as with all Sony products are the proprietary accessories and batteries. It's expensive, and there are others out there for the serious hobbyist with a little better price tag. It can also be a little strange ergonomically. Though I would encourage people to try it, as despite it's non traditional appearence really does feel good in your hand.

I absolutely love it! I purchased this Sony before several affordable (relatively speaking) 6.0 SLR cameras came on the market. All other things being equal, several extra features on the Sony swayed my decision... one example is the infrared capability - NightShot® (enabling photos in total darkness with an infrared illuminator) and similarly NightFraming (which allows framing & focusing using infrared, but switches to a flash & visible light capture).
My only regret is not being able to change lenses such as some of the latest SLR digital cameras allow.

The lens is attached to the camera, so the back can swivel for ground level photos without getting on your belly. Because of the Led screen of the digital camera. The lens is a Carl Zeiss lens the length of the lens is great to hold on to. Being Digital you can see your work right away and delete your unwanted photos and reshoot them with out waiting to get then developed.

I haven't had mine very long, the major drawbacks for me are the placement of the zoom control (wrong side for me) and the lack of a black and white option. (it does have sepia). I find myself still grabbing my old Mavica when I'm in a hurry. This camera has a lot of potential, and I love the long battery life and the fact I can use all my old memory sticks from the Mavica.

A great deal of comparison shopping was done before the Sony DSC F717 was decided upon. The rotating lens, 5.0 mega pixels, and the Carl Zeiss lens are the main features which sold me on it.

I like the camera much, small, light weight. You will need some time to master it. The lens is situated to the left and heavy, your first 30 to 50 photos will be tilted leftwards.
The shots are brilliant and crisp.
Accessories are very expensive.
Lots of advantages, some small disadvantages like the red eye is not quickly accessable you need to go to the setup menu.
Not much features in the image download software.
Amazing long time battery life.
Buy a tripod for best results. Do not buy a flash, its flash is enough !

I love it! I wish it were a little lighter and compact. Battery life is excellent. The photos look fantastic. Auto focus is dead on!!!!

Wonderful controls, good to great pictures. It is annoying to be only reviewing one picture without having to transfer out of picture taking mode.

This is the best camera I have ever used. I use it on the lowest possible photo size and i sill get incredibly clear photos. It is definitely worth the high price tag they place on it ($800 total, $600 to replace the lense). There are so many functions and options with it that I find something new to do every time I pick it up. My favorite part, although it is probably common amoung other cameras, is the option to switch between the LCD screen and viewfinder. THIS CAMERA IS AWESOME! I HAVEN'T FOUND A THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT IT YET.

This camera has a very long battery life, I only have to charge it about every two months, and I use it alot. One thing I don't like is it does'nt have a monochrome setting, I was surprised by that. Otherwise it's a great camera.

Love this camera, a great digital camera that bridges the gap between point and shoot, and SLR. I think that it is the best digital camera for shooting digital infrared.

If you can explore this camera's features and its true potential, it is one of the best in the Auto / Manual 5MPX digital camera catagory.
Put Offs: Even with the most precise tripod, and great care in taking each snaps, this camera is not able to do justice to Panoramic photo shooting needs. Its much junior brother, DSC P30 is much better in this area.

WELL THIS IS MY FIRST REAL CAMERA. I LIKE IT ALOT AND AS AN AMATEUR OPINION "I LOVE IT". THE FIRST TIME I SAW THIS CAMERA I ALREADY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT BECAUSE OF ITS 58MM LENS. THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY EYE. IF I WOULD HAVE TALKED TO PEOPLE BEFORE I BOUGHT MY CAMERA, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GONE FOR A NIKON. PEOPLE TELL ME NOW ADAYS THAT NIKON IS A REALLY GOOD CAMERA AND I CAN KINDA TELL WHEN I MESS AROUND WITH A NIKON AT THE STORES.

This digital camera produces some very nice images. I only had this camera a Month and use it more than my Nikon SLR. To bad
I can't use my nikon interchangeable lens with it.

This camera produces excellent images, with a fast Carl Zeiss lens, less shutter lag than most cameras of this class, full manual controls and the swivel body that helps get shots that would normally be next to impossible - such as overhead above a crowd, or under things that are within arms reach, but beyond the body's ability to contort. Of course, it's not quite a DSLR, but compared with other cameras in the prosumer class, it's right up there at the top!

I really like the instant gratification that you get with a digital camera. I also have a cannon Rebel xs and I also really like that camera. I've had that one for 13 years and have done numerous things with it. I can't find anything that I don't like about the digital and like that it resembles my film camera in body. If I had to find fault with my digital it would be in the hesitation when you use the flash. I do have an external flash that I want to try that maybe will eliminate that problem. I love this site and have told several coworkers about it. Keep up the good work!! Meredith Jo Ehli

I like this camera. It takes a great pic. The sharpness is very good. It does great on macros and portraits. The only drawback is that you need to be quite close(less than 12") or more than 3 feet to take a macro. In between that you really can't get a good shot.

I use the camera for macro setting and optical zoom functions, and everyday shooting. The ability to manually set several features is a very attractive function.
The flash has given me a slight problem, in that the red-eye *is* reduced, but not by an acceptable degree. I have an additional flash to use.
The camera has been a great choice for me. And I would do the same if I were to buy again at the price of the Sony F717.
