I love the clarity I get from the 10X zoom lens, and the fact that I can change lenses on this digital camera. I find that it takes awesome shots outdoors, but indoor shots are not as good. I also find that using the tripod is essential for clear, steady shots.

I love my camera! It takes great shots and gets great color. It takes a few seconds to actually take the picture after you click the button and to reset so have missed some action shots and I'm having trouble getting things focused on very close-up shots but that's probably a "user" error :) vs a camera problem.

I like this camera due to the Ultra Zoom and Macro lenses. Being digital the possibility to edit is there but I never have to. Full shutter and aperature control allow a nice touch when taking sunsets. The Macro lenses allow very nice shots of close ups.

Pros: Takes high-quality photos, easy to use, 10x optical zoom, three custom settings and several preset settings.
Cons: Tends to blur if subject or camera moves. Shutter speeds slow in low-light or some indoor situations. Action settings still produces blurred photos. Eats batteries like candy.
Overall this is a good entry level camera however I would recommend Minolta or Nikon.

This camera does an OK job. Sometimes, a lot of times, the picture looks clear, however when downloaded is extremely blurry. I thought it may be my eyes, but got them checked and it wasn't! ;)
It isn't very user friendly, and is quite a PIA when trying to use the options. I think I was spoiled by my very easy to operate HP Photosmart 945.

This is the first digital I have owned. So far I am mostly satisfied with the camera. Sometime the LCD monitor does not work in certain modes. It is difficult to change the shutter speed on this camera. The manual is not user friendly either.
I highly recommend this camera for snap shots, however, anymore advanced work, I would definitely recommend another camera.

Olympus C-740 is a precursor to the C-765, which in my opinion is the best ultrazoom. The C-740 has performed admirably, with sharp images and adjusts to difficult conditions with ease. It is a bit battery hungry though and not meant for action photography - either i get ghosts or the actions already over, needs a lot of forethought which I lack.

I like the wide range of options and features that let me go from fully auto to fully manual fairly quickly as far as digitals go. Zoom is excellent at 10X optical, and price is fairly low because of the low,yet sufficient 3.2 megapixels. Con is that its reaction time is a little, which makes moving subjects all the more challenging.

I have taken this camera to zoos and many other places and it turned out professional quality photos. I utilize a 128 mb XD Picture Card and put the setting on best, holds about 130 photos at top quality!

The camera satisfied me at the moment.
Colour transfer are mostly accurate. Lense has 10x optical zoom good for my needs. Images are crisp and clear and are with medium noise level. Also0 macro is not so bad.
The option I like most of all - this camera feels well in quite negative temperatures. At least -10C to -15C is not a problem. By the way noise reduces in winter outside shots :)
what is some kind of disadvantage - slower than other cameras response.

This camera has given us some of the most detailed photos upclose as well as some interesting details when looking at the moon for example.
It is quite sensitive to motion in certain modes and thus requires a very stable hand or atleast use of a tripod. However, we're very content with this digital camera.
I especially, moreso than my husband, use this camera constantly almost every day just shooting away and improving on my knowledge and skills of the camera. It's wonderful to just download your photos and then erase the old and start afresh.

This camera is so small and portable yet incredibly powerful. It captures the most beautiful colors and seems to enhance them to become almost more colorful than the original subject. It's very easy to use and the automatic settings are easily adjusted manually in and outside of the pop-up menus. I ALWAYS use the view finder with it. This camera is highly recommended for anyone who is not a professional and who prefers digital formats. Love it!

I love the 10x optical zoom. The main thing I don't like about it is how long it takes to focus and actually take the picture, especially when using the flash.

overall this is a great 1st digital camera (it was for me). the nighttime mode on the dial is pretty much useless, one can set the camera into shutter priority, use a tripod and accomplish the same objective. using a full optical zoom indoors, with flash, won't give me a focused image. I need to back off the zoom, and move closer to the subject. everything else is better than I expected. I hope to upgrade to slr digital someday, when my wallet allows it.

The autofocus doesn't seem all that great, but that might be just because it is a new camera and I'm not familiar enough with it. I definitely like the EVF and the diopter adjustment. The camera has a lot of features that I like. I even found a lens adapter that works well with the camera and enables me to use my 52mm polarizer (the Olympus adapter will let a person use a 55mm filter or lens).

Bought it for the 10X zoom, but found that I use the macro and super macro settings more often. LOVE the super macro. Only draw back is that I cannot set up time lapse on it like I could on my previous camera, Kodak DC 290. But didn't have the macro capability with that one so the trade off was good.

Love my camera. The only thing it doesn't do, is have sound for the video mode. I might have thought twice about that camera if I had realized it before buying it. However I didn't buy it for video, I bought it for the 10X zoom which is great! Overall a great camera.

My first 'digicam'. I did lots of research before settling on this camera, and it was a perfect first camera for me. There was enough auto function to encourage me to just get busy shooting without worrying about the settings, and enough manual control to encourage me to experiment and learn the effects of different settings and functions. I had a great time exploring the new (for me)world of photography with this camera, and was completely satisfied (until I was ready to move up to a DSLR ;)

I really like that it gives me total control over the aperture, shutter speed, and focus. The manual focus could be a little easier to use but works great. The 10x optical zoom is definitely a plus. I also like the controlled flip-up flash. All in all I really like my camera.

I think the overall quality of the camera is amazing, especially the 10x optical zoom. Of cource with every products there are cons and pros. I think the negative part about the camera that because of the automatic zoom it is hard to keep camera focused. The other thing it has very slow speed in a dim or inside light, especially if you want the flash off. But mostly it is a good digital camera that i would reccomend.

Upon graduating from college in the year 2003 my parents asked me what I wanted as a gift to commemorate my achievements. I responded without hesitation, a digital camera. However, being of a limited budget, my parents weren't thrilled about the going prices of the cameras I was looking at. So I suggested that I could cover half the cost. With that settled it now came down to the decision of which one.
I had already done my homework on the matter months in advance, and had narrowed my selection down to two brands; Sony and Olympus. Although I would have liked to have gone with the better known brands like Minolta, Nikon, etc. But I had to keep within my and my parent’s budget. So after reviewing what Sony and Olympus had to offer, I came to a decision; the Olympus C730 Ultra Zoom. That camera had a slew of amazing features; 10x optical zoom, 3x digital zoom, audio/video recording with built-in microphone and speaker. So I quickly went to work on my next task, finding the best price. Unfortunately, I hit a snag, and after several weeks of browsing and calling local shops, I had to come to the realization that the C730 was slightly out-dated, and as such, difficult to acquire anywhere. So I went back to square one with an idea of which model might be sufficient, and upon looking at all of the features of the C740, I decided that it was the one for me. The only feature I had to give up with this newer model was the built-in microphone and speaker. On the up side however, the camera was slightly more compact than the C730.
That was one of the many features I wanted in my digital camera, extreme portability (a concept that Sony seemed to have been neglecting in many of their models). So once I found my camera for a reasonable price, I made the purchase.
Here are all the good things I found with the Olympus C740:
* Portable / Compact
* Advanced, easy-to-use digital menu with a slew of capabilities
* Amazing "life-like" digital quality (default dpi 2048x1536)
* Digital display to view images instantly
* 10x optical zoom (comes in mighty handy)
* Spot photography (allows for extreme close-ups; flowers, insects, etc.)
* Preset modes and variety of customizable features.
(...Many, Many, More...)
Now for the bad things.
(I imagine some of these occur with most of the digital cameras on the market.)
* Sensitivity to motion; either subject or photographer (sometimes slightest move on my part would create blurred images)
* Slow shudder speed; in low light camera takes several seconds to focus after button press (makes it impossible to take "snap-shots" and again this will also create likely motion blurs. Even in direct sunlight there is a slight delay between button press and shutter - disappointing.)
* Flash and low light issues; even with the flash on, if the subject is not well lit before flash is activated, camera may not be able to focus. Possible degraded photo quality.
* Motion sensitivity is worse when zoom is used; best results occur when tri-pod is used.
* Action preset setting on camera doesn't capture live action; like sports, or kids playing in park (I still got motion blurs even while using this setting - what's the point.)
* Battery hog; even when using rechargeable batteries, I can only take an hour or two worth of pictures depending on what features are used (zoom drains batteries rapidly)
* Flash takes several seconds to charge; can't take picture with flash until flash is charged.
(There are probably a few I didn't include, but you get the idea. I am currently looking at SLR cameras, they've recently gone down in price and are said to be designed for much, much faster shutter speeds and motion captures.)
Overall, the Olympus C740 is an excellent camera, one I recommend for any serious, budget conscious photographer. This camera captures brilliant, life-like color and detail provided you apply a few tactics. If you looking to take pictures of your kids with this camera, your best bet is to be outside or in a well-lit area or to take the pics while your kids are asleep.
Another personal note; it took me several months to fully adjust and get used to how my camera worked, and what conditions it worked best in. I had to learn on my own what features and limitations my camera had. I have taken thousands of great photographs, several of which are astounding, and a handle of which are extraordinary. I hope this information is useful to you. Thank you for your time.

This is my first digital camera. I bought it a month ago, and I think it is a great camera. I like its vibrant colors, sharp pictures (sometimes not so sharp without a tripod at it maximum zoom though), compact size and ease of use.
I have hardly been an enthusiast before I bought this camera, and after buying it I am so much interested in photography. It has got many creative features which I like very much, and hope to use them some day.
Negatives: 1). No image stabilizer. 2). Panaromic mode does not show the previous frame. 3). No autofocus light.

Photo quality is excellent when the batteries are new, but as they wear down the images become blurry, especially action photos that come out dead-still with new batteries. Maybe it's a flaw in my particular camera, but it seems to suck power like nobody's business.

Like I said, I'd make another review...Thumbs-up * Really sharp images * 10x optical zoom * Good battery life * Packed w/ a lot of features Thumbs-down * Slightest movement blurs images * Time consuming menu navigation * No panorama feature in non-Olympus xD cards If it weren't for the thumbs down, I'd give this camera a 10. Well, you can't really have everything, eh? With the good comes the bad. This camera isn't for those who don't own tripods and can't hold the camera steady, or those who have to take a shot at a second's notice, or those who find buying another set of cards unappealing. Otherwise, this camera is for you!

The 5 isn't really my final rating. I'd be posting again soon. I just wanna share my initial impressions on the camera which I bought just a few hours ago. I'd have to say, the images are really sharp (I owned a Canon PS A60 and its shots aren't as sharp as the C-740's). It has a lot of features... which gives people the impression that they'll be going through a steep learning curve. I beg to disagree. The camera is quite easy to use. Without even reading the manuals (though I strongly suggest you do), you'd be able to figure out how it works.Downsides: (1) Images easily blur. I have rather "shaky" hands, and this camera detecting the slightest movement, could prove to be a pet peeve to some. (2) Grains are noticeable. (3) The display lags from time to time. Doesn't seem to have a very good refresh rate. (4) The first three mentioned are acceptable, what my beef is with this cam is the XD Card. They're quite expensive, and the included 16MB one can't really store a lot of images. Despite the downsides. I'd have to say, this is still a good buy. I'd be posting again soon after I've thoroughly used the cam.

I have only owned and used the camera for several days but immediately see better image quality. The menus were a little confusing at first but I expect to take this in stride and master them all before long. It hasm many more options than the Sony Mavica and the lens is far superior. I like the intermediate size and the built in diopter in the viewer. This camera should suit the amatuer and the professional but I wouldn't recommend it for the beginning digital photographer.

I upgraded from another digital Olympus. It has some great features, like the automatic focusing and the ability to see everything through the viewfinder as well as the LCD screen on the back. I guess my complaint would be the screen seems a little hard to see on the back, especially when you are outside. Other than that, this camera is a good improvement over the other Olympus I had.

This is my second digital camera, and I wanted something that was more than just point and shoot. I have had it for about a week now, and have been taking some, what I think, are awesome pictures.
I have never taken such good pictures before... and I know a lot of it is the camera.

Compared to my "point and shoot" sony P-7, this camera rocks! Fully manual to fully automatic, along w/macro, supermacro, zoom 10x OPTICAL, not digital, digital can get you up to 30x. Light metering system which is way better then my film camera (canon rebel-g), allows you to meter up to 8 different areas w/in your frame to help you obtain the most even exposure. The lens allows for a conversion lens. Images are crisp, clear, and the saturation, contrast and sharpness levels can all be set before you take the picture. Its not as user friendly as the p-7, but then again, the P-7 lacked the options of this camera.

I am very pleased with my 740. I had read alot about pictures being blurry when zooming, but I have not had that problem. I have not used the extra digital zoom feature, as I feel I have not needed to. I have taken pictures from bleachers of a high school stadium and was able to reach the entire field with good close up quality. When looking into the eyepiece it takes a bit of getting used to as the view is digitized and not clear like a regular camera. I have several shots in my gallery from this camera. The macro mode does a nice job on close ups, as my rose shot will indicate. I have used both auto and manual modes and fine the camera well worth it's price. I recommend this camera.
