Canon EOS-1Ds is the world's highest-resolution professional digital camera, featuring the first-ever full-frame 35mm sensor with 11.1 million effective pixels. The EOS-1Ds captures astounding detail and color, almost doubling the resolution considered state of the art for a digital SLR camera in the world today (September 2002).
With its extremely high resolution, the EOS-1Ds is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of professional photographers--including studio, commercial, reportage, or fashion photography--who need the ultimate in digital image quality.
This camera is very similar to the EOS 1D - the only differences being a 11MB CMOS imaging chip, a slower shooting speed of 3FPS, and a huge sticker price :(

I have been using this camera for about two years. I love it! It's a lot to handle and the batteries are heavy as lead, but the final product is exquisite! I took the camera to Italy with the 70-200, 2.8, IS, L series lens, and "UGH" what a load to carry on the trains and hiking, but WELL worth it. I was there for a month and took 9,000 raw photos, problem free. The sensor is a breeze to clean if you follow directions and use the proper kit. Takes less and a minute or so. Highly recommend this camera!

I moved up from the 20d, after much research found that this camera would give me the more bang for the money. I am very happy with the CMOS sensor the quality of the colors is fabulous much smoother then my 20d or Rebel 350. Noise does not seem to be a problem as I found that I could take photos at lower ISO speeds, below 640 ISO. The extra mp (11.1) are very helpful in finding the correct color temperature and when I crop. The menu is straight forward easy to learn, at least after the 20d and Rebel (very similiar to the Rebel. I give it a five because the perfect camera does not exist.

Love it except for the particles that accumulate on the CMOS despite careful technique. Adequate home cleaning is difficult and sending it back to Canon is a frustrating solution.

I am just getting to know this camera. I like the sharpness of the images. However, I notice that the camera does not necessarily have the same range as my eye has; I see more detail in the distance than appears in the picture.

I still admire and have no intentions of parting with this machine, even though I work also with its big brother. It has much to offer the photographer not only with its large pixel count and image quality but it is a rugged extremely well made camera. Being attuned with nearly all Canon lenses and Speedlites, it's one of the most flexible cameras to be found anywhere. Some people say that the raw images are a little soft at factory default settings and it does show more noise than the 1D MK II and 1Ds MK II. But the latter cameras are second generation giants besides a little digital darkroom work and the images shine. It’s not a speed demon either at 3fps and the battery power can soon be consumed especially with constant image reviewing. However, for me it is a superb camera and will be with me for some time to come.

Pros: Excellent resolution, full 35 mm size sensor, Low noise, even at high sensitivities, ISO 50 offers even cleaner images, fast auto focus, Environmentally sealed camera body, ISO can be selected in 1/3 increments.
Cons: Full size sensor means that lens aberrations are more visible, Maximum sensitivity of ISO 1250, Menu system is highly frustrating, Camera weight.

The Perfect camera does not exist, and likely never will, but this one is pretty close! This is a near 12 megapixal digital SLR with a frame size the same as a 35 mm. This is great in that all lenses perform as they should without the crop factor of other dig SLRs. Image quality is great as long as the ISO is not too high. I really hope Canon addressses the noise issue in any updated version of this camera. It is not a HUGE problem though, it just requires a little time in PS to get a decent image even when shot at the max of ISO 1200. This is also a large, heavy camera, which can get tiring to lug around all day. I just use the hand stap only to save my neck! Good PS skills are almost essential with this camera. It is best to shoot in RAW and use PS CS for conversion to TIFF files. The Canon supplied RAW software leaves a lot to be desired. Overall, this is a fantastic camera CAPABLE of fantastic results, but it IS a pro camera and demands knowledge and thinking on the part of the user.

I really like this camera. Really, i only have these few negative comments:
1) the irreplacable buffer only holds four pictures, meaning that when shooting in sequence, only four pictures can be taken and it's only 3/sec
2) the backlit display turns off when you check the light meter (quite frustrating in the dark)
3) i had to completely abandon AF due to numerous occasions of the camera refusing to take the picture
4) the battery gauge only has three stops- full, almost empty, and totally empty.
these are pretty minor things... it's a really nice camera.

I have been using this camera for 6 months now and have used it in lots of different enviroments from very cold to hot and humid. It has lived up to it's Canon name and performed flawlessly. Since I only shoot in RAW mode, it helps to eliminate the worry about WB issues and most of the time the camera is spot on with little correction. The image quality is outstanding, period.
