This lens is part of Sigma's EX line, a step up from their consumer product line. The lens is well-built, with a solid polycarbonate shell and nice speckled finish. The zoom ring had some rough handling on the sample I had - it was well damped, but it seemed to have some grit in certain spots - you could feel it as you went through the focal range. The aperture ring felt a bit flimsy, although this wasn't a handling issue for modern AF cameras that control aperture from the body, but may be of concern for manual-focus body users.

The lens is an internal focus (IF), but the length does change slightly - the barrel extends a little bit when at full wide-angle, and retracts when at full telephoto. The front ring does not rotate, which improves handling when using filters such as C-PLs. It comes with a nice scalloped hood which clips onto the front bayonet ring.

Using a mixture of transparency and print film, I found that the results wide-open were just a bit too soft for my taste. Stopped down to about f/5.6, things became much sharper. Color reproduction is good, but with a distinctly cool cast. In short, it's an okay buy if you must have f2.8, but there are some better balanced (albeit slower aperture) lenses out there for about the same price (Nikon 24-85 AFS G is a good example).
