I love this camera! I have thought about upgrading but just can't bring myself to do it yet. I think it's a very rugged camera. Mine has gone through alot including a dip in Lake Superior! great value for the cost.

I've had my D200 for anout 5 years. Awesome camera. One comment before spoke about noise. Maybe something is set wrong or he has a lemon. Great camera. I was in Hong Kong and spoke with a gentleman who had the 200-300-700 and being a professional he says that the D200 still gave better color than the other three.
Was going to upgrade to a 800 or 600 because of the full frame but I'll wait till my 200 dies.

The D200 is just too noisey! I must use software to removed the noise on every picture.

I've used the D200 for two years now and have pushed the shutter in excess of 27,000 times. It has performed flawlessly, the only bad photos were results of my own forgetfulness and silly mistakes. I like the brick-like feel and sturdiness, heavy and solid.
The body is well sealed. I left it hanging on a privacy fence post in my backyard overnight .. in the rain .. the next morning I picked it up, dried it with a towel and it performs as if nothing had happened. I use a 2GB CF and download frequently, which means the card is constantly being removed and reinserted without showing any signs of wear. It has been, and continues to be, one awesome performer.

I have been in yhe presense of a friend whom ownes two d200 and several lenses and acc. I watched in aug.2007, as the camera fell two feet from a tripod, set up to capture southern Oregons fihh lake. She barely bumpted it, it hit a rock and the camera and lens were BOTH broken and had to be replaced. Again One month later, she droped her 18-? mm w/a lens one foot, it broke but was repaired. In march of this year, onother D 200, got wet, and died.I noticice it was replaced by a new D 300. Dom you feel this camera is more rugged and reliable? Also what about the nikon sensors? It appears they are limited to only 2/3 of the focal length.

I sold my D70s to buy this machine. Combined with 18 - 200 VR lens, its real value for money.
It doesn't take better picture compared to D70s but has better features that makes a difference. I wish it had the electronic shutter as my D70s.

I have had this camera for almost 1.5 yrs and I can say it is a beast. The AF is spot on, the menu is great, the ergonomics fantastic.
Downside is that it is a battery guzzler and is worrisome sometimes.

This is the best camera I've owned in my whole life... I'd liked a longer-lasting battery (D70's is the best I've had) The Mb-D200 is a must if you're going to be away from any power source for a while... Excellent display, plenty of controls and awesome speed.

This camera is heavy enough to take steady pictures. With the vertical grip it feels like a pro camera. Every control is at your reach without needing to look outside the finder... just worry about composing and shooting.

I think Nikon may make better cameras in the future (it has to be so) but it's very difficult I'd have to change this camera for any other except for a full-frame body...

awesome reliable camera. ease of use is amazing... battery life is a bit short (mainly if I use the LCD screen a lot) but the quality of the camera and the photos it produces are stellar, a steal for the price (i bought it for $1350 off of amazon)

Excellent camera. Plentiful controls and accessories; strong performance; excellent image quality; rugged body. I'm still figuring out a lot of the functions, but this camera takes really good pictures. I think it's great for amateurs and pros as well. Maybe the menu could me a little bit better.

After using my D200 for some time now and understanding the features I have changed my review from a previous post I made. It's a great camera don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I don't know what else I could ask for in a camera except if maybe you pushed a button and it turned into Cindy Crawford or Jessica Alba or an instant tripod.

Truly awsome camera!! Was shooting weddings (www.koleckiphoto.com) with my D70S, now my D70S acts as backup. I'd say the only that I do not like about it is battery life, but I bought a MB-D200 and now the batteries last just about as long as the D70S.

Outstanding. I use a 75 year old Carl Zeiss lens. It has CPU on the d200...I own this camera just two weeks. Before that I used the d50. A fine camera but he is no match for the d200.

Jury is still out. Bought a brand new D200 and I am unable to get a tack sharp picture from it. I can use my D100 under all the same conditions with the same lens and the pictures are very sharp. Contacted Nikon and was advised to send camera in.
I love my Nikons but we will see how the factory takes care of this issue.
I will keep my fingers crossed.

I sold my 2 D70's to own this marvel of a camera. It's pretty heavy and the batteries do not last long like the D70 did. The joystick multi selecter is more predictable in the D70. Plus the sensor sucks dirt from everywhere. Don't ever change the lense if you can. But the choices you have in focus and metering modes is great plus the motor drive is like a machine gun it's so fast 5fps at top, but you can adjust it for slower if needed.

I'm rating it a 3.5 only because of the battery doesn't last very long as that's real annoying plus the weight.

I have used several Nikon Digital and film cameras. The D200 Has all the other Digitals beat hands down.
Of the ones I used ...

The D100 didn't have the vivid color.

The D70 and D70s were nice with the 500/sec flash sync but just not built as solid as the D200.

The DX1 didn't have the file size..

I think the D200 has all the best from the past Nikons and is built to last. (built like a Nikon!)

Also glad it uses Compact flash and not SD cards. I don't want to trade-out my CF for a new medium !

Best camera i've ever used...more intuitive than earlier models.
The D200 blows the D100 away.

Nikon has done a good job in making the menus easy to use,
No more digging through menus for common tasks.

The controls are very intuitive, I can easily access the most common ones with one hand. The LCD-screen is amazing : you can magnify it to see what your picture looks like, GREAT! The performance is simply amazing.

it will still take time to learn all there is to know.

I will complement with a battery grip so I can get better balance and vertical shoot.
Battery time is not as good as on my D100
For the fast Aircraft photograph has the D-200 some problims esp.
with aircraft in grey-grey camo.
There are few cameras that will do you better.

So far, so good...

I like the features of the D200, the AF is very quick, the FPS rate is very good. I am very comfortable with the placement of the functions, buttons, the menu system, love the 3D matrix metering system. One thing I don't like is the lack of a fast telephoto lenses above 300mm for consumer (i.e. not too expensive) that equals the canon 100-300mm or canon 400mm f4.

Just got this D200 after some time with D1x and D1h. I miss the build of the D1 house. Anyway it´s a very nice camera that i will use as my No.1 for some time. I will complement with a battery grip so I can get better balance and vertical shoot. The best for the bucks in mid 2006. Battery time is not as good as on my D70 but with the grip I can load 2 battery.

For the money this may be the best camera you can buy. I have used Nikon D1, D1x, D100 and various film SLRs. I bought the D200 for about the same amount as I bought the D100 ($1500 with a few years in between). The D200 blows the D100 away. The alloy body, more frames per second, larger LCD for reviewing image info and menu, PC connect for studio lighting, 1/250 v. 1/160 sync speed, better skin tones… The list goes on. Those are just a few of the improvements that I thought should be made and Nikon made them. Of course, you can still get more with a D2x. But for the money and for what I do, the D200 is a great camera. JM

The D200 in my opinion can be considered as the second best in the Nikon Digital SLR line , it is may be better in some compartments than the D2X CCD v/s CMos chip.I have both and I can say that I now shhot more with it than the D2X.Price being less than half the D2X price. As a back up body it is just what someone needs. It is strongly recommended.

WOW! Excellent digital SLR. Rugged construction, well layed out controls, excellent speed and quality.

I have been using Nikon SLRs since 1985, and have continued to stay loyal. I use a Nikon D70s for forensic work, and almost purchased one for personal use (a step up from my Coolpics 4500). However I luckily waited to buy, and was rewarded with this very rugged, fast, easy to set and manipulate digital SLR. Short of a full frame sensor, I am not sure what could be improved upon. I have used the D2X, and not much is gained by the several thousand dollars of more expense. I strongly recommend this camera to any experienced amateur or professional, you will not be disappointed.

Basically I love the camera. I have used an F5 l before and the top of the coolpixline and the D70. It seems very much like a digital version of the F5. All the controls and the menus are intuitive. You hardly need the manual. I highly recommend it. The only reason I have not given it the highest rating is I am finding some issue with pixels when shooting directly into the sky. It is probably due to my settings and not the camera, I am sure.

I first owned a nikon d50, got my feet wet and decided to get the d200, and am very impressed with this camera, easy to use but loads of features. holds its own against my cousins d2x. a great investment for any photographer!

This is a great Camera! It’s solid, quick, & has a wide list of functions. The only draw back is that with advantage of flexibility comes the curse of complexity. Nikon has done a good job in making the menus easy to use, but it will still take time to learn all there is to know. I will post in update after i get past my learning curve with this camera, but so far this camera brings a whole new love to photography.

Great Camera. All the important features iso,White balance, Quality of photo are now easily on the top left side for "quick" changes. The larger lcd image screen is super nice....I tend to use my screen lots to check exposure, etc...... so I run the battery down fast. I suggest you spend the extra $50.00 and get a secondary battery.

I own the D70s and picked this camera up and used it as if I had been for some time. It is definately not designed to be a camera for someone not familiar with pro equipment even though it is condidered just below that. I am still considering the D2X but this camera far out performed my
expectation. I get clear sharp images
and love the low noise hat higher iso
settings. I have begun playing with multiple exposures and learning the ways the flash works in command mode with the SB 800 flash. It is fantastic!

I absolutely love, love this camera. I have a Nikon N80 for a maybe 7 years and wanted a good digital camera.I recieved a small digital a few years ago, but waited for Nikon to come out with a new one. This camera has so many features and options, I am clueless. I hope to learn how to use half of the features through experimentation. So far, shooting in jpeg, I have gotten some pretty decent pictures, and I don't know what I am doing yet. I am not experienced enough to find anything I don't like about it. I am very happy thus far.

Pluses - fast continuous shooting mode (good for sports); fast start-up; no shutter lag; rugged metal body;large bright LCD display; intuitive control layout; fast focusing with S-series lenses; custom settings banks; very true-to-life colors; low noise with accurate exposures. Minuses - can be noisy over ISO 400 if exposure is not on the money; battery life greatly affected by how much you use the LCD display; no way to lock custom settings banks; seems to be less forgiving of lower quality optics then other Nikon bodies; extensive shooting options menu can be intimidating for those moving up from a point-and-shoot.

I have own several digital point and shoots, a Olympus E-300, a D70 and now a D200. I enjoy the speed of the D200, and the control the user has over image quality (image optimizer). I dislike the battery life and how the LCD image is actually brighter than the image that was taken. These are very minor complaints and I can only see going to a full size sensor from this model. I would imagine that in a few years of using this D200, Nikon will probably have a full size sensor model available as I don't want to re-buy lenses in the switch to Canon (for full size sensor abilities). This is an awesome camera and I enjoy taking it off manual settings and pushing myself and the unit. I get more and more confident with continued use and find that any complaint is a very minor one. I shoot entirely RAW and use Adobe RGB settings.

I love my D200 because it gives me plenty of options with the settings and the file size - without the weight of the D2x. It is kind of a bummer that it is not a full chip image and so the effective focal length is not the same as it would be with a film or full chip camera.

My capability to utility Nikon D200 is way below what this camere is capable of, for now. The reason that I rate it 4 1/2 is because there is no machine is ever perfect. The reason that I rate it almost "best" is because I am pretty happy with the pictures which I have taken so far.

The camera feels good, is rugged, has more options than i know what to do with at this point. i mostly shoot in raw so alot of the bells and whistles i don't really care about. I am shooting with a newly acquired 18-200 nikon lens which i tend to keep on my camera body 90% of time.

At the moment I really haven't used my cameras enough to provide a quality answer for whether they are great or not. I do know that as I improve my skills and creativity, that both the D70s and D200 are able to do the job I want them to do. If I had to pick one thing from each camera that I didn't like it would be this. D70s - Requires a lot of custom settings to perform well. The more I use manual however, the more this become a positive. D200 - The battery life is not that great. Everything else is too new for me to judge, but I'll certainly update this in the future and my views change.

Love the camera. Only complaint is noise at high iso but it's not that big a problem to detract from overall quality. IQ is fantastic!

The Nikon D200 is a wonderful proffesional camera. It's fast and very well built. It feels solid in your hands. Features like the exposure overlay and multiple exposures add to it's already extensive line of features. I use it everyday with the greatest of ease and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a digital SLR.

I have had the D200 only a short while and here are my findings. It is FAST ! Very user friendly with ISO, Image Quality, and WB at your fingertips. Very solid feel, fits your hand perfectly, and the rubber seals are most comforting, especially for goofs like me who end up tumbling down snowbanks. It keeps on clicking! A bit heavy in comparison to my Canon G2 but that's ok. I am looking forward to this summer's shoots. For anyone getting a D200, it is the only Nikon supported by Adobe Camera Raw. I was led to believe that I would not be able to open RAW format pics unless I got Nikon Capture 4.4 Not so! PS-CS2 opens RAW images from Nikon's Picture Project download software. If you have CS2 you're ok. If you get the VR 18-200 with the D200, expect a fair amount of distortion at the close and far ends of the focal length. Once again, this can be taken care of in CS2. And that's the lens. The camera? SUPER.

For a Prosumer camera, this one is excellent. I bought it as a backup for my D2X, when weight becomes a factor - I used it on a Heli Skiing trip last week, in British Columbia - in The Bugaboos. Many mornings it was -25c on the ridge tops.... No problem. I'd take over 200 shots daily, without ever having to change out the battery. It is very easy to use, intuitive, and nice to handle. At 10.2mp, the file sizes are adequate for most stock agencys. Auto White Balance is very accurate. Auto Focus is fast, and @ 5 fps, fast enough for sports. Not quite as fast as the D2X, but for the difference in cost, this camera is a real bargain.

I have a Nikon D70 and just bought the Nikon D200. I have been SO impessed with the quality shots that I am getting and not to mention how fast it is. I have to be careful with consecutive shots because I can go though an entire card in a matter of seconds!! LOL I like being able to customize the settings and have more choices. I really love this camera and feel its going to be well worth the expense.

I have had my D200 for three weeks. WOW! It delivers speed, precision, fast focusing and tons of features that will keep me busy for some time to come. It is a bit heavy, but I do not mind because of the durabilityy factor. One of the things I like is the lack of noise in very dark photos. My Olympus, both E300 and E500 had terrible noise in moon shots with High or Low ISO. The D200 has none. I would recommend this camera to anyone wanting a pro level experience without the pro level cost. I use a battery holder. At the present time I have only one Nikon Camera. It is Nikkor 18-200mm 1:2.5-5.6 G ED. It is heaven. Fast, precise focusing with a Vibration Reduction feature that helps gaurd against movement at long zooms. I am saving for a larger zoom with more speed so I can shoot atheletic events in low light environments.

This is fantastic! The new layout of all the main adjustments (you no longer have to hunt through menus for the most important adjustments) is excellent. The four user-programmable shooting banks and custom banks are blessing enough, but hook up an SB-800 or 600 as a wireless remote (or a whole heap of them if you want) and then use the pop-up flash as the controlling flash and a whole new world opens up.
But the thing that really blows me away is matrix metering when using my 25+ year old manual focus Nikkor 135mm F/2.0 (and all the other decades old Nikkor glass for that matter). Thank you Nikon, thank you thank you thank you :)

Lot of new possibility to set the camera as you want.

I just got it so it's to early to make legitimate comments but first impressions are there's a lot to learn. I like the feel, very solid yet the size is not over whelming like the D2H. I added the Nikkor AF-S DX VR 18-200 mm lense to go with it and all reports are its one of the best combinations for the body, but it's another element I have to learn. Once I get comfortible with it I'll open a gallery with only images from the D200.

The Nikon D 200 is a 10.2 megapixel camera. Besides the obvious love of the increase in megapixels over the Nikon D 70s, I love the fact that most of the settings can be opbtained on the outside of the camera, as opposed to aleways having to access the internal memory.
