I love this camera! I have had it for over 15 years now (probably closer to 20!) and you can't beat the pictures it takes!! I have to say, I like it better than my digital camera -- I know that I will always get great pictures from it!

Its optics are very good as compared to other lenses. Its Sturdy and fully manual and hence gives one more confidence on his own creativity and understanding of the light.

I love my camera! It is a great camera for a beginner photographer. I bought it on Ebay, for $75.00. It was a great investment.

I is my firt digital camera. I got it as a gift. I find the viewer not really true to the picture. So I use my eye instead. I still love my manual pantax.

When the camera did not jam my film in the sprockets, it worked fine, and for an inexpensive, very durable camera and I was pleased. However, in New Zealand, I spent a lot of time in the closets of businesses, (because I didn't bring a black changing bag) trying to feel what was wrong and why the film kept jamming. Not everyone had that problem, but I had it constantly, and so when the opportunity to change manufacturers came, I jumped.

It is my first camera to work with on a regular bases and it is good but I have worked with digital and it is my preferred medium. It is a good working, good quality camera. I think in the modern day of cameras and photography it could be classified as an old but still workable camera.

i have 2 cameras i use a manual pentax k1000 that i have used since high school and thats the best manual camera i have ever used.it is user friendly and easy to handle.i also have a digital camera i use the konica minolta dimage z2. that camera is remarkable with all the options for a perfect picture. the only thing with the digital camera is that the micro focus could be better.

I used my Pentax 35 mm camera, with zoom lens, for many years prior to the popular sales of digital cameras. Many of my finer photos were taken with the Pentax. I now use a newly purchased Poloroid PDC5070 digital camera.

Tough as nails. reliabe with no electronic fancy stuff. Forget anti-shake, megapixels, white balance and litning fast auto focus. This camera lets you stick to the basics, and the elements, of photography.

I think all the reviewers who gave the K1000 bad marks are a little off-base.

You have to grade it on what it is, not what you may want.

Rating a K1000 badly because it doesnt have auto something-or-other is like rating a DSLR badly due to lack of video capabilities.

It is what it is - an all-manual solidly built SLR. It is made for students and experienced photographers who prefer a tough built, reliable camera that gives total control to the photographer rather than a bunch of computer algorithms.

In this task, the K1000 performs flawlessly. I highly recomend it.

The Pentax K1000 is a good starting camera. It is easy to use. It is however, manuel so it doesn't have auto focus and doesn't have the option of continual shooting. So it is not ideal for photographing wildlife.

I love the simplicity and user control of this camera. It's my first SLR and it definitely helps you get a handle on exposure. I've produced a lot of good images with it. Autofocus feels like a luxury, though, when I try out newer cameras. I will upgrade to a DSLR system in a year or so.

Awesome image quality when used with Pentax Takumur lens', especially fixed focal length lens'. My personal favorite lens is the 135mm Takumur. The K1000 is a tank and it's my most dependable camera.

I think that the Pentax K1000 SLR camera is an ideal camera for people who's starting to appreciate photography... Although, I cannot say this now because it's the digital age... I really love this SLR because it enhanced my love for photography... The only downside is that it is fully manual and it's difficult to take "fast paced" pictures like when you're in a car or in a hurry... Creativity wise, it sure is the best SLR for me...

I love my Canon Powershot and find that it's extremely practical - small, lots of memory, quick easy import to my mac, various settings, etc. But I love my Pentax manual camera for the tactile experience. I feel closer to the process of shooting, more so than with my digital. It was the camera I learned on, and I find when I need to experiment with lenses and filters, that I can learn even more and have more choices i.e. fisheye lens, zooms, etc.

I like the fact that it's old and still works like a charm! It has no automatic features, so it forced me to actually learn about exposure and focus. It is easy to use and has a tough metal body. It's a bit heavier than modern cameras, but that's ok. The only real drawback is the quality of the lenses I use, especially the telephoto one- it gets pretty grainy and is hard to tell if it's in focus. But that's the lens, not the camera. Overall, the K100 has served me very well over the years and I would never get rid of it. It's still a joy to use and it actually 'clicks' when you push the shutter!

I love that the K1000 is so entirely manual. It gives me full artistic control, first and foremost. This can, however, also be aggravating when I just need to pick up the camera and take a snapshot. Overall, though, I love the camera.

They definately don't build them like this anymore. It takes a beating and keeps on taking great shots. Only downfall is that it doesn't come with a timer. If you ever have a chance to get one of these, grab it! As my photography teacher says, it's the workhorse of the camera world.

My Pentax is a beginner camera, but still one of the best. It's simple design was perfect when I was a student and continues to maintain it's simplicity and usefullness. I love the fully manual aspect and the fact that there's only two dials on it. It is quick and simple to use and almost anyone can understand it. My digital is the a Nikon Coolpix. It's an earlier model, so the photos come out pixelated. I love the fact that it works on the go and is light and mobile. However, I hate waiting for it to warm up, sometimes the shot is lost by the time the screen turns on.

GREAT camera for IR (infrared) work..Does NOT have sensors to "read" format... thus fogging film.. Pure IR neg's!!! from edge to edge of frame. Add a red fliter and your set! Note: Bring changing bag....IR MUST be loaded and unloaded in DARKNESS! A bit more work..... but worth it!!!

My sons went into sports and I had to learn quick, , Over the yrs I have tried several camera and I still go back to my first love. I take better pictures with this one then an automatic. I get to create my own shots, and using different lens , filters and film .

Reliable, well-made, solid, but ugly and boring, all-manual SLR. It was out of date the day it was introduced, in 1976. Yet it was sold in millions for about 20 years. One reason is that it was the first camera a dealer put on the counter when anyone came in to buy their first SLR; another was that in the UK it was for many years officially recommended to anyone doing an art or photography course.

The "K" series was introduced in 1975, replacing the screw mount Spotmatics. The KM was a basic manual, KX had more viewfinder information, and the K2 added an automatic exposure mode. These had short lives because small cameras became the rage, and after only a year Pentax brought in the "M" series and dropped the KM and KX. The K2 hung on until 1980.

But Pentax had invested in the "K" design and production, so to get some return they launched the budget K1000. It was a KM with its features stripped out. It lost the self timer (surely essential for this "family" camera) and was given a cheap insensitive CdS exposure sensor (left over from the Spotmatics). Metering is by getting a needle horizontal in the viewfinder, with no indication of aperture or speed. It was a harbinger of Pentax's downmarket move in the late 1980's with the "P" series.

Though short on features, the quality is fine. It uses the same lenses as the professional K2 and LX for example, and the same shutter as the MX. The mighty Pentax 6x7 also has the simple meter needle and no self-timer. Millions of people were happy with the K1000, and still are. But it is a puzzle why it was sold for so long when there was the similarly manual tough little MX, which was far more up to date and had all the normal features, including full viewfinder information - and for the same new price!

A nice backup to my Ricoh KR-5 Super, I still use these old cameras when I need really long manual exposures, as for shooting night skies (I think the Nikon N65's slowest manual speed is 30 seconds). I had three K1000s, but gave one away because of poor metering. The two I kept are accurate and closely match my Ricoh. I still need to test all of these bodies against my Minolta spotmeter F. I use a variety of Pentax and off-brand lenses with these bodies.

When I really begin to think about it, I really cannot decide what I like better, my 2 canon ae1s, or the two pentax k1000's I used to have. I love the simplicity of the camera, yet in the right hands I would pit it against some of the top cameras of today without losing any sleep. I think the lens are that good. Cannot think of anything that I do not like about it other than the all-mechanical operation of the shutter speed may not be quite as accurate as a camera with a cpu, such as the canon ae1.

I rated it a 6 only by today's standards. this was my first serious camera, purchased in 1980. Still have it, the normal lens it came with, added a telephoto-zoom lens, and it still works fine. Only replaced a couple of light meter batteries in this camera. Loved the manual aspect of the camera...got to experiment, took photography courses while this was the only camera I owned...learned photography with this camera.

This camera was given to me a few years ago. It was my fathers and when he heard that i enjoyed taking photos he sent it to me. I love this camera, I'm just not sure how to use it... I'm so glad I found this site so I can learn. I love the way the subject is in focus and the rest is blured a bit. However I'm not sure how I did that. When I played with It I changed the settings and don't know what it was set on before.

For the sharp visual control as in the macro close-up style of shooting that I do. I transfer into digital the images that would be best used in that format. My Pentax is a steady "combat" camera. Metal frame and body for substance and control. Manual for the creative control of the exposures of half to one full stops. I use other manual cameras as well, but the Pentax is my most comfortable to use. The feeling while "working" the camera is very natural--no second guessing.

It accomodates all skill levels, from the greenest novice who is just learning the ropes, to the consumate professional who wants to get back to basics.

Great Camera for anyone who loves photography, Manual controls let the photographer make the photo. Solid camera for the times. As with anything all cameras evolve into something better we hope. I like having control over my photos and of course the K 1000 does that. I have 2 K 1000 SE cameras with 12 different lens and makes a great outfit. Thanks Pentax for the memories!

My only back draw is that if I'm in hurry to get a photo, I have to be sure it is set properly so I don't always get that candid shot. I also love the way it is made. It's sturdy and versitale.

Great workhorse of a camera, had it for 20+ years and it still works great, fully manual with match needle metering, battery only needed for meter, shutter works at all speeds without battery. Don't like the automatic meter "on" when lens cap is removed

Good camera for mastering the basics. Perfect for beginning students of photography. This is a camera that teaches you about cameras. Pluses: Cheap. REAL cheap. But....deeply satisfying. Tough. Durable, all metal construction. Feels solid. Though, admittedly I haven't tried shooting at it with metal BBs or bullets or anything. Pentax 50mm SMC lens is terrific for the price you pay. Good for night photography as you can leave the shutter open ALL NIGHT LONG, (thus far, battery has lasted 5 years without the need to replace it.) All manual forces you to slow down and think about the shot. This is can be either a frustating limitation to the unitiated or an illuminating learning experience. Minuses: small viewfinder does not accommodate the bespectacled among us very well. If you wear glasses you will find the viewfinder a bit tiny. All manual everything means slow for action photography. Though, I can pull off 2 shots a sec now...maybe 3. Aside from that, overall, outstanding value, great camera. As always, tt is the photographer that has to learn to compensate for any camera's limitations.

great for beginners, and for learning the functions of the camera. great for black and white as well. love the fact that you can drop it a hundred times and it still keeps on taking. very tough camera body. no computer parts to mess up. would love to have a flash and bigger lenses for close up shots. overall it is so nice for getting creative.

I have always liked this camera. It's easy to use and is especially nice with the zoom lense that I bought for it. I like the ability to use a remote shutter release and to set a long exposure time, if necessary, something that I really miss with my digital camera. It has a nice internal light meter as well.

Absolutely amazing image quality. Light enough to carry around a lot, but solid construction so if it happened to drop it wouldn't need repairs. Easy to use and understand. I bought it used and it still outweighs competition, especially of the digital variety.

I do not have any training back ground with cameras, so I can't get tech on it. I just get one and play with until I get a feel for it - just got this camera in July, my Miranda of 25 years finally died and a friend of mine got a great deal on the Pentax so that is how I got the Pentex - I really enjoy working wiht this camera and I'm finally getting a feel for how it works and shoots.

This pentax K1000 was given to me as a gift 20 years ago when I knew nothing about cameras. I am thankful that the person who bought it for me knew it was a top camera! It is a fantastic camera to learn with. It teaches you the nuts and bolts of photography. It is sturdy and reliable and has never let me down. I will one day in the near future I will update to another SLR that has a few extras, but my K1000 will continue to be with me until the end! Karen Noye.

i like this camera alot, it has what you really need to take photos. its a sturdy solid dependable camera, no extra bells and whistles here, like self-timer, dop button, mirror lock, or exposure compensation dial, auto film advance, auto rewind, beeping sounds or auto focus, maybe thats why this camera has been around so long and is still going strong.
a keeper for sure. :)

I think it's a great camera to take traveling/anywhere that you don't want to have to worry about your camera taking a beating, getting wet or getting stolen (which is why I chose this camera). The thing I didn't like about it was the Tamron 70-300mm tank of a lens I carted around everywhere. It was hard to focus at 300mm, due to its weight, and I would have liked to have learned how to properly focus with it (so I understood why half the frame in the viewfinder went black sometimes). I also wish I learned to focus faster with the both lenses (also had a 50mm), due to the lack of autofocus. All in all, it worked great for Southeast Asia.

There is no better camera to start learning on than this one. My dad got it for me 8 years ago, and it's still in great shape. It's completely manual and allows for great control. No spot meter on the lens, but if you're able to get a handheld meter and you practice using both, you'll be able to case out each situation anyway. I'm mainly into using medium and larger formats now for more professional shots, however, for shooting live bands and photojournalism this is the only 35 I need.

You can get a lot of great pictures, but the manual set up is kind of hard when your not used to it. It's great for a photography student as a first year... Getting used to light meters aperatures... it's reasonably priced. But I've taken just as good pictures with my digital camera (if not better)

I give it an 8 only because there are so many cameras out there that do so many things, and I have no idea what most of them are. But this is a great camera to start out with. I've had mine for 8 years now. My dad got it for me when I went off to college. And now, I'm able to produce a lot of professional quality prints both for my photography classes and for work purposes. It's completely manual, so really it's all about your knowledge as a photographer. It forces you to become a great photographer, and gain knowledge on all the technical aspects because if you're as anal as I am, you will make sure you know what to do with the camera.

It has everything you need and is incredibly durable and sturdy. I've taken this camera with me all over the world, and trekked with it to India a few times- which if you've been there, you understand. It'll withstand almost anything. I've taken it mountain climbing, white water rafting, through steamy jungles- the SMC A 2.0 50mm lens it comes with has withstood all weather conditions. No problems with fogging.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable camera to start out with that they hope to have for a very long time. If you want to make sure you learn the ins and outs of photography, you'll have fun with this camera. I use it now to shoot bands at clubs professionally, and the pictures come out great. And for scenery, a polarizer on the lens adds a lot to pop the colors.

I don't plan on getting another 35 mm unless I hit it big in business. Professionally, I think medium and large format are used most often, and my next buy will most certainly be the medium. The best thing about the Pentax- it's less likely to give you problems in the long run, because there aren't so many extraneous features, and no computer chips and what not to worry about breaking down. Highly recommended.

Sreedevi
