Featured Article: Photographing Art in Nature ... by Jim Zuckerman
To BP instructor Jim Zuckerman, the most exciting forms to photograph in nature are icebergs. "The combination of aquamarine and deep blue along with the snow and ice is incredible, and the forms are out of this world." Check out Jim's fascinating thoughts and tips on light (overcast) and lens choice (wide-angle).

Featured Blog: Create Artistic Photos by Visualizing Your Options

In my BetterPhoto courses, says instructor Deborah Sandidge, "one of the things I hope to communicate is to visualize creative options. You can do this with your photography before you make the picture, by thinking about how you wish the end result to be portrayed." I tried this last night myself, but did not get this great a result. I can't believe all the detail that is visible... great job!

Response 1:Thanks, Maria! Also, had a "stacked" Canon 1.4 + 2.0 extender on my Camera. This moon was hot @ 5:00am today! I have one shot same night but at 10:30PM. They look very different.

New Photo Discussion 2: Reflection Distortion

Through a Glass Wildly
Through a Glass Wildly
Everytime we go to Denver we seem to pass by this particular building. I've always gotten boring grab shots. This morning we took a detour around the block and I got out and captured some very interesting reflections of the glass towers "playing" off each other. I like all the black zebra-like stripes in the glass. My husband, the physics major, told me that this happens because all glass is not flat like we think it is. If all the glass panels were flat, there would be no interesting distortion and everything would be perfectly symmetrical.

Debbie - this was well worth the side trip. This is a fantastic image. I love the colors and the patters of both the reflections and the glass panels.

Response 2:What a great catch this is - very interesting! I love all the different designs and love the color tones of this one also. Very well done, Debbie, must have been the right time of day and the right lighting.

Wow, beautiful photo, very well done. Have a wonderful 2010.
Kind regards.

Response 1:Much appreciated António - I had a chance to shoot in Kauai (been there a few times) for a week-long assignment. I found a mix of scenes, and set up a few portraits, including this one of an painter near Po'ipu. I set up my lights to create something different, and it worked, with one of his beautiful paintings acting as the backdrop.

Response 1:Hi Amalia,
Glad you like this scene! While on a five-day trip to Las Vegas a few weeks ago, my goal was to shoot the lights and colors of the Vegas Strip each evening - a good strategy since I was attending a seminar during the daytime each weekday. But I always like to look for photos close to "home" - so to speak - even when on a trip! So I got up a little early each morning to check around my hotel for possible shooting subjects. The nearby Platinum hotel glowed just after sunup.

I shot a variety of compositions on two consecutive mornings, and my favorite image was this one. I slanted the camera to turn the lines into diagonals for extra visual energy. I left out the sky completely and chose to fill the frame with a tight composition, since my intention was to make this a photo of a graphic-design pattern rather than a photo of strictly a hotel.

Two other notes:

- With my prime (non-zoom) 50mm lens, I composed the shot by "zooming" the old-fashioned way - by moving in physically closer.
- I used a tripod here ... for optimum image quality, as well as to get the preciseness I wanted - in the viewfinder :) - for the composition.

Thanks again for commenting, Amalia!
