Where in the World? To learn the correct answer to the last quiz - and see who came the closest, visit the previous Where in the World quiz. Lensbabies: Get Creative with Selective Focus SLR Lenses! Turn Your Photos into Beautiful Cards! New Photo Discussions Photo Tip: With flower close-ups (as well as portraits and many other scenes), the background is just as important as the main subject. Make sure distracting colors or bright "hot" spots don't detract from the foreground. In many cases, this means going for less Depth of Field - not more - in order to blur out details into soft colors. For this image, I chose a wide aperture (low f/number) for minimum Depth of Field, and then moved the camera in order to place a diagonal yellow-flower strip so that it complements the diagonal slant of the foreground lupine. I also positioned the camera to get the left-background lupine to "balance" with the foreground lupine. Working with such a narrow Depth of Field makes focusing a challenge. Since it's usually impossible to get an entire foreground flower sharp, that means you must carefully consider the best spot to focus. To me, macro's inherent lack of Depth of Field means an opportunity for creating images that rely on soft colors, simple shapes, and selective focus. The Next Step: Where to Go From Here

Response 1:Hi Matthew,
There are several lights in this shot. There is a light to camera left, which lights the top of the counter, and rakes across the oven and refrigerator. There is a light in the next room, which would be the bright area on the right side of the shot. I believe there is a low power strobe on the right side of the shot, but unfortunately I do not remember. The lights are probably Norman 200B units, but it is possible that I used a Calumet 750 Travelite.
Thanks, For your interest!

Nice shot, the people add to the scale nicely, you can really see how vast the landscape is.

Response 1:Hey, thanks, Chris:
I love shooting small subjects in large landscapes for exactly that reason - showing the place where they are and the perspective of scale. I love the Tahoe region and was on assignment shooting the Tahoe Rim Trail for a magazine when I shot this. I also posted it to show students how backlighting can be so effective.

Response 1:Thank you for the nice comment! I've been going back and scanning my old slides. I'm 100% digital now, but I want to digitize my "lost treasures". 10 years ago, the scanners were not of the quality I would have liked. This scanner I have now, for under $200, is a steal!
I've had this print on my mantel for about 10 years now, the latest scan and print is much better...
Thanks again for sharing your comments Sherrye.

Response 2:This really is beautiful. You know, I love digital (mostly for the convenience); however, I really miss Fuji Velvia film. It was (probably still is) the best professional film for color, saturation, clarity, etc., that was ever made. Personally, I don't think any digital will ever match it.
