Featured Article: Photographing at Night ... by Scott Stulberg
Shooting long exposures at night is one of instructor Scott Stulberg's favorite kinds of photography. In a new BP article, Scott writes: "So many amazing ideas seem to come alive at night as well as the impact of the bright lights and intense colors." Scott, by the way, teaches an excellent online course here at BetterPhoto: Photoshop Tips, Tricks and Filter Magic . Check out his new article...

Digital Photographic - Gallery-Quality Prints From Your Digital Photos Lensbabies - Selective Focus SLR Lenses! New Photo Discussions I must give my wife, Mary, a little credit, though. She gave me this abandoned 1942 Ford Dump Truck for a gift a few Christmases ago. Then, she recently gave me the metal rooster sculpture. And when she saw a real live rooster atop a truck at a neighbor's ranch the other day, she said: "Hey, Kerry, you can do that with your rooster on your old truck!" Well, perhaps I should give Mary more than a "little credit" here - after all, her props, her idea :-) LOL !! Thanks again for the nice words, Debby, and again, great hearing from you. P.S. This was a fun shot to do with my wide-angle. However, I first tried shooting this scene from a distance with a telephoto. And while I could get the front of the truck and the rooster to fit nicely within the frame, the background was just too distracting ... lots of things competing with my subjects and the lower part of the sky was a pale blue. But by moving in super close and then kneeling down for a low camera angle, I was able to place both the rooster and the truck against a bolder and more beautiful higher part of the sky ... a perfect background! This shot is part of a series for an article I'm writing on the use of remotes in the field. (...Now, if I could just get those dirt stains off my shirt.) Bob Paul Let me provide a few more details on this shot. I have a single guiding principle in my nature photography - to always "look for the light." The sunset light had played on this pot of flowers on my deck for a few minutes. I was looking for a good backlit shot when I realized that the sun was filling the center of the flower with light. I knew that this light was as magical as it was fleeting. I fired off several shots between f/2.8 and f/8. This is the shot that I liked best because of the shallow depth of field and the lovely bokeh. Later, in Photoshop, I burned in the edges a bit to tone down surrounding highlights. This is still one of my favorite images because of the magical light. Light like this is a gift that doesn't happen very often. Nice diagonals, with a sense of balance and the feather ... a sense of lighness. Really nice photo, not to mention the bull's eye within the side of the feather.

Most cameras can be remotely operated in one way or another.
Whether you use the timer or some other auxilliary remote triggering system, it can sometimes be fun to get from behind the camera and get into the action.

A couple poses for a portrait following their ceremony and about 20 minutes after sunset at a wedding in Phoenix, AZ. Lit by a 550ex flash and a Stofen dome, I triggered it with an ST-E2 wireless tranmitter.
