What really attracted me was the steam in the background. I saw that steam, and thought, "Well, it might be kind of boring just against a blue sky". So I positioned myself so the building would be behind. Then all of a sudden, I noticed someone was watching me. Interesting how these things develop, isn't it? Thanks again for your support and friendly comments. I hope that you are in a safe area away from the wild-fires.. Also, thanks for pointing out the attributes that really attracted me to this image. I always love warm-vs.-cool color contrast ... and shooting late in the day (just minutes before sunset) enhances all of the colors in the scene. Incidentally, I purposely moved in nice and tight with my wide-angle lens - while also pointing my camera upward - for a couple of reasons: 1) to emphasize the unique wide-angle perspective; and 2) to place the wheel right against the blue backdrop. Thanks again, Donna ... I'm pleased that you like this shot! Kerry P.S: Congrats, Donna, on your wonderful Grand Prize winner in the August BetterPhoto contest! Shot in the evening with the camera's white balance on tungsten. The Next Step: Where to Go From Here

With just a few days before BetterPhoto's fall online courses start, now's your chance! Some classes are already full and others are filling up fast, so if you have been considering a course, don't hesitate to sign up. New Photo Discussion 1: Watching Us with Curiosity
It amazes me how one person with a camera could be at the same setting and only see a pigeon on a ledge. That person would look and say, 'why bother?'. Then a photographer arrives at that same setting, sees the image or waits for it to unfold, captures it and says, 'that's why'. Great observance and great capture Jim.![]()

How did you get the photo to come out like this? (settings, flash?)

- Paula
Response 1:Dear Paula;
This photo was taken without flash because it was an actual play reading, and I was not allowed to use flash for actors' concentrations - and audiences as well.
My camera was at a manual setting, and if I can remember correctly the ISO was set at 200. I didn't have any tripod or monopod. I simply took many shots and concentrated at what I wanted. I cannot remember the aperture and speed.
What I learned that day was to take as many shots as I can until I captured the one I was looking for.
Cheers.
Hamid

Response 1:Thanks. I had the opportunity to get above them on the promenade, so it gave me the height that I wanted to have them repeat into the background. It's a funny story, though. I got up very early the day after I first saw these, to be in place just after the sun rose over the ridge to the east of the beach. The only trouble was, no one came to unfurl the umbrellas until 10:30 am!! I forgot I was on "Italian" time, and things don't happen early. It was a fun image to make. Good thing the coffee shops opened early ...
