It amazes me how one person with a camera could be at the same setting and only see a pigeon on a ledge. That person would look and say, 'why bother?'. Then a photographer arrives at that same setting, sees the image or waits for it to unfold, captures it and says, 'that's why'. Great observance and great capture Jim.

Response 1:Hi Allen,
What a nice compliment. I really appreciate your kind remarks.

There is one twist on your appreciation, too. What really attracted me was the steam in the background. I saw that steam, and thought, "Well, it might be kind of boring just against a blue sky". So I positioned myself so the building would be behind. Then all of a sudden, I noticed someone was watching me.

Interesting how these things develop, isn't it?

Thanks again for your support and friendly comments.

Response 1:Hi Donna,
Thanks for the nice comments ... very much appreciated! Thanks for asking about the fires - fortunately, out here in my little slice of the California countryside, everything is fine!

Also, thanks for pointing out the attributes that really attracted me to this image. I always love warm-vs.-cool color contrast ... and shooting late in the day (just minutes before sunset) enhances all of the colors in the scene.

Incidentally, I purposely moved in nice and tight with my wide-angle lens - while also pointing my camera upward - for a couple of reasons: 1) to emphasize the unique wide-angle perspective; and 2) to place the wheel right against the blue backdrop.

Thanks again, Donna ... I'm pleased that you like this shot!

Kerry

P.S: Congrats, Donna, on your wonderful Grand Prize winner in the August BetterPhoto contest!

Tony, great image, love the colour. Did you do anything in PS to get this colour? so peaceful, but then why shouldn't it be from a person like yourself? Good going.

Response 1:Hi, Stan, and thanks a lot for checking out the photo and for your kind words. No PS. The scene is colorless, and the color in the image is created by using a Singh Ray Gold/Blue polarizer.

How did you get the photo to come out like this? (settings, flash?)
- Paula

Response 1:Dear Paula;
This photo was taken without flash because it was an actual play reading, and I was not allowed to use flash for actors' concentrations - and audiences as well.
My camera was at a manual setting, and if I can remember correctly the ISO was set at 200. I didn't have any tripod or monopod. I simply took many shots and concentrated at what I wanted. I cannot remember the aperture and speed.
What I learned that day was to take as many shots as I can until I captured the one I was looking for.
Cheers.
Hamid

What another great find! I love this shot. The child is looking right towards you and the white scarf makes him pop right out. I also like the way you can still see the moms face slightly. The lines in the material worked well too.

Response 1:Yeah, everything worked in this one - even though I had originally wanted Mom to be in the picture too. But she said no when I asked, and undaunted, I then asked if I could photograph her "beautiful baby". What mother can resist a request like that? :>D

What a fun shot! I love how you composed the curves of the umbrellas ... draws you all the way around.
- Kelly Heaton

Visit mycreativeeyes.com - Kelly's Deluxe BetterPholio™

Response 1:Thanks. I had the opportunity to get above them on the promenade, so it gave me the height that I wanted to have them repeat into the background. It's a funny story, though. I got up very early the day after I first saw these, to be in place just after the sun rose over the ridge to the east of the beach. The only trouble was, no one came to unfurl the umbrellas until 10:30 am!! I forgot I was on "Italian" time, and things don't happen early. It was a fun image to make. Good thing the coffee shops opened early ...
