BetterWorkshop: Capturing A Sense of Place: Western Ireland
|
Join accomplished photographer Jim Zuckerman and Irish guide, Olcan Masterson, through Western Ireland. Jim Zuckerman enjoys sharing his knowledge of photography with tour participants, both beginners and advanced amateurs or professionals. He can address a wide range of photographic topics, from digital manipulation of images to techniques in shooting wildlife and nature. He also explains how to capture the essence of any culture by photographing people in both dynamic and intimate ways. In addition to instruction during the trip, Jim is happy to review portfolios or slide sheets to help you solve problems and answer questions about your photography. Participants shooting digital cameras can also benefit from Jim's critiques of their work at the end of each day. He is also able to talk extensively about marketing your work, if this is one of your goals.
Olcan Masterson is a walking authority on the history of western Ireland, who has spent many years exploring the hills and back roads of the area. An accomplished musician as well, he has spread traditional Irish music all over Europe and the U.S. with his flute and tin whistle. Mostly though, he's a living embodiment of Irish charm and hospitality. He'll show you the spirit and soul of Ireland as few visitors will ever experience it. You'll get a view of the land and the culture that comes with living it, not just visiting it.
Western Ireland affords us a unique opportunity in that there are so many wonderful hidden places to explore. Even if you've traveled to this area in the past your guides will seek out new places to visit and photograph. There are spectacular monastic and megalithic ruins to seek out in your daily adventures. Use your guide's experience so that you may encounter the discoveries.
Highlights
Itinerary
May 14 Shannon - Hillcrest House, Westport
Each day we'll visit some of these typical areas from our home base at Hillcrest House. It isn't possible to see everything during each tour, as we also like to take time for unscheduled stops. Our guides will plan each day considering the interests of the group, and special events taking place during your time in Ireland. We often start each trip with a visit to Ballintubber Abbey, or Baile Tobair Padraig, in Irish. It is one of the oldest Abbeys in Ireland dating back to the 12th century, named for the natural spring nearby, where St. Patrick baptized his first Irish converts. Hillcrest House lays half way between the City of Westport and the Village of Newport. They both capture the flavor of true Irish towns with their tree-lined canals and colorful shops. After a stop in Westport, along the shores of Clew Bay, we will drive to Murrisk Abbey, at the foot of Ireland's Holy Mountain, Croagh Patrick. Later in the day we will be at the ocean on the west coast of Mayo at a remote rocky shore called Barnabawn Point. Another day we will spend the morning photographing in and around the town of Cong. Photo locations include Cong Abbey, the forest and river as well as the town itself. The picturesque village of Cong was the setting for John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara's film The Quiet Man. The King of Connacht founded the abbey ruins in the 12th century. In 1198 the last High King of Ireland died in the abbey. After lunch we will have the opportunity to photograph an area of rolling hill, sheep and a myriad of stonewall, on a hillside flowing down to Lough Corrib. Driving north today, our first stop will be along the ocean on the Atlantic drive in Mulranny. After Lunch on Achill Island we will continue photographing along the ocean and given time wind up at the deserted famine village at Keel. Achill Island is the largest island off the Irish coast. To get there, we'll drive over the bridge at Achill Sound. The island wrought by wind and water - an arrangement of rock, cloud, and cliffs falling off to the sea. Today we visit one of the few remaining round towers in Ireland, Turlough, standing amid a field of ancient carved gravestones. Nearby is the new Museum of Country Life, one of Ireland's National Museums, well worth the stop. We photograph along the shores of Doo Lough and the Connemara Mountains, where we'll see some of the most stunning landscapes in all of Ireland. After lunch in the town of Louisburgh, we will spend the afternoon photographing in the Sheeffrey Hills, a place where we must be careful not to disturb the leprechauns who inhabit the forest.
Burrishoole Abbey is a great place to start one of our days. Nearby is Carrigahowley Castle, one of the many strongholds of Grace O'Malley, the adventurous 16th century Pirate Queen. Later in the afternoon we visit Letterkeen Forest.

Travel insurance helps to minimize the risk of monetary losses you would incur in the event of a delay of your departure due to weather, airline strike, missed connection, etc., your inability to travel for reasons such as illness, injury, unforeseen financial complications and other personal circumstances, or if you were required to cut your trip short for medical or any other reasons. There are restrictions and limitations on any insurance program. For this reason, please read carefully the enclosed pamphlet, which outlines their program of trip cancellation, baggage, and medical insurance. Trained agents are available to answer your questions, so don't hesitate to call the toll free number in their brochure. It is to your advantage to apply for insurance at the earliest possible time, so don't delay in making a decision.

About the Instructor In 1970, I decided to abort my intended career as a doctor in favor of
photography and have never regretted it. Photography has enriched my life more
than I can tell you. My career has taken me to over 60 countries, and I've seen
and photographed wondrous things. For 25 years I have been shooting medium format, specifically the Mamiya RZ 67, for its superior quality. When I would lecture, I’d project these large, glass mounted transparencies, and it was really an incredible experience to see the brilliant color saturation and resolution of these slides. However, I have just converted to digital because the technology has finally equaled or surpassed medium format. I now shoot the Canon 1Ds Mark II digital camera with a variety of lenses. I am the author of 12 books on photography. My work is sold in 30 countries around the world, and my images have appeared on scores of magazine and book covers, calendars, posters, national ads, trade ads, brochures, and corporate promotions. For many years I've led photography tours to exotic places. These include Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Burma, Greece, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, Spain, Morocco, and Peru. I also teach these exciting online photo courses here at BetterPhoto.com:
