One of Oregon's most incredible landmarks, the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection area covers 500,000 acres in the Southeastern Oregon desert.

This workshop will emphasize landscape photography. By combining this beautiful location with excellent instruction, we'll help you come away with the kind of images you seek.

Combination Online and On-Location Experience
The online photography course concept is a terrific one, allowing you to have your work critiqued directly by the instructor. In most on-location workshops, however, there is simply not enough time to have your work reviewed. That is where this workshop differs...

This workshop is like a mini-course on photography. Before we meet in Oregon, you will be supplied with plenty of information in order to prepare yourself for the shoot. Then, during the shoot, you will learn more and, of course, have plenty of opportunities to put your photography lessons into practice. Finally, after the workshop, you will be able to upload your favorite results from the trip for critique by the instructor.

The first rule of landscape photography is to be prepared. After all, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity - you want to make sure you are ready before you get to the shoot.

Along these lines, you will receive lessons and articles on the topics before arrival.

But we don't want to stop there... to make sure both you are your equipment are ready, we will have one optional practice assignment. You will be given a task to shoot before the trip.

Then, after you complete this pre-workshop assignment, you will upload the results for review by the instructor.

After the Workshop

This is the best part! After you arrive back home and have time to go through your plethora of excellent images, you will select your favorites and upload them to a special Web page at BetterPhoto.com.

There the instructor and other participants of the workshop will be able to review and critique your photos created in Oregon. What a great way to know if the image you captured is truly successful.

We will also have an area for questions and post-workshop comments.

The Workshop: What You'll Learn

Our field work will be followed by lively lectures and slide demonstrations. Our lectures are casual and will cover such subjects as:

  • Controlling depth of field

  • Controlling exposure and contrast

  • The best filters to use and when

  • Why you cannot always trust your exposure meter

  • Making stronger compositions

  • Large format cameras and how they work

  • Stock photography

  • Putting people in the landscape

  • Following the workshops, participants have 2 weeks to upload 6 of their best shots from the workshop for viewing and critique.

    The Workshop: Schedule of Activities
The week begins the afternoon of Sunday, September 26, and ends after breakfast on Saturday, October 2nd. The schedule:

Sunday kicks off with a casual gathering, snacks, beer and wine, followed with a 6:00pm dinner and then an evening slide show.

  • Monday through Friday, we will arise early for coffee and a morning snack before driving to our destination for sunrise photography. We will return mid morning to the lodge for a full breakfast and time to rest up, clean up, and relax. Mid afternoon we will return to the lodge for some photographic discussion and instruction before leaving on our evening shoot. Following our evening photo shoot, we will return to the lodge for a full course Western-style meal.
  • On Saturday morning, the workshop will end following our morning breakfast and farewell get-together.

  • Location, Location, Location
Steens Mountain is nearly 10,000 vertical feet and 30 miles long, an enormous fault block that rose up millions of years ago to cut a bold line between the greener western slope and the desolate Alvord desert on the east side.

This area in Southeastern Oregon includes a wilderness with valleys, aspens, meadows, and, of course, wonderful views.

We will spend the week at the Lake Creek Base Camp, an Eco Lodge, operated by Steens Mountain Packers. At 7,000 feet, the camp is nestled in the aspens.

Lodging will be comfortable tent cabins and gourmet Western-style meals. The tent cabins are double occupancy, with each cabin including the following:

    • A queen-size bed,
    • An armoire,
    • A queen futon hide-a-bed,
    • A wood-burning stove.

A separate restroom/shower facility is centrally located.

There are no telephones or electricity at the Lake Creek Base Camp. Solar power is used widely, and generator power is available for a few hours each evening.

Depending on your carrier, cell phone service may be available near the lodge and usually on the top of Steens Mountain.
