At BetterPhoto, we often get questions from people who want to become "Professional Photographers". What advice do you have for someone who says they want to pursue a career in photography? Is there a key to making a name for yourself?

Lewis Kemper:

First figure out what kind of photography you want to do for a living. There are so many kinds of photography - weddings, journalism, wildlife, nature, sports, etc. Figure out what your passion is and then pursue that passion. And then persevere, hard work is the key to success.

How you make a name for yourself varies from field to field. To be successful in wedding you only need to be the best in your local area, to be a successful nature photographer your competition becomes more national or even global!

But take steps, don't expect to make big leaps, work one step at a time and build. Use one success to create new opportunities. Meet as many people in the field you are pursuing, those connections will help you become more successful.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on getting into the business of photography, Lewis!
