BetterPhoto Photography Interview with Lewis Kemper - Part II

You were one of the first successful outdoor photographers to branch out and add the digital darkroom to your professional "workflow". How did that come about?

Lewis Kemper:

I always had a fascination with the computer and the image. I bought a Commodore Amiga computer when they first came out because they were the first color computer (4096 colors!) and I thought that was the platform that all this digital imaging was going to evolve on. There was some primitive image editing software for that machine and I quickly began playing around. I remember trying to interest Outdoor Photographer on an article. I borrowed one of the first inkjet color printers from HP and made some crude prints and when I sent it to the magazine, they basically laughed and said the technology wasn't ready. Then a few years later I saw Photoshop 2.5 (before layers!) demoed at a photo show and I went out and bought a Mac (it was Mac only back then) and Photoshop and I haven't stopped since!

What do you like the LEAST about running your professional life?

Lewis Kemper:

Airplanes!!!

One of the questions we sometimes hear is this: Is it really possible to learn Photoshop in an online course? As a longtime Photoshop instructor at BP, can you share your thoughts?

Lewis Kemper:

I am totally convinced my online students learn and retain more than students that come and take week long classes from me around the country. Online you get to work on one concept for a week and you get the technique and the theory down before moving on to something else.
