How has your magazine background (as a former associate editor for Outdoor Photographer, PC Photo, and Digital Photo Pro magazines) influenced your teaching at BetterPhoto?

Ibarionex Perello:

It gave me a really understanding of how eager people are to get better as photographers. They want to learn technical stuff, but they also want to be inspired. I try to reach a balance of those things when I teach or make a presentation. I know I always respond well to that kind of teaching. I really want to feel excited about making photographs. It helps to digest all the technical stuff that I'm learning.

Your career has spanned the transition from film to digital. What do you consider the biggest advantages of shooting with a digital camera over a film camera?

Ibarionex Perello:

I can experiment more freely because of digital. Because I don't have to pay for every 36 exposure roll to be processed and printed to see what I've done, I have much more freedom to shoot a subject exhaustively looking for the right angle or perspective to make the one shot that works. I have shot the equivalent of a 10 rolls of film on a single subject, which just wasn't feasible when I was shooting film. I'm able to push myself in ways that I never would have imagined doing when I was shooting film.

What quick advice do you have for someone who wants to improve his or her photography skills?

Ibarionex Perello:

Join a community of photographers whose work you love and respect. They will be a great source of inspiration and knowledge, and will help push you to get better. More importantly, it provides a great opportunity for you to share what you know with others. Even if you are a novice, you likely have a perspective that others may not have which is important to share.

Every photographer, regardless of skill of experience, has something left to learn. It's what I love about the community here at BetterPhoto. I learn so much from my students and from viewing the work of others in the web galleries and BetterPholios. It all helps me to stay focused on getting better.

Thank you, Ibarionex. We appreciate your encouragement and advice!
