Overly's Country Christmas in Tungsten

Uploaded: December 14, 2009

Description

Manual, 4.5, 1/8th of a sec,ISO 400, white balance set on tungsten, center weighted average metering. A slightly different composition than the first, this picture posted as a comparison to my original. I tried only a few shots in tungsten because the highlights kept flashing on the right side but when I decreased the exposure the left looked underexposed on my LCD. This one may be better than my original post, because the snow is much whiter and brighter but I'll let you decide. Thanks Carol!

Exif: F Number: 4.5, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/8 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 400, White balance: Manual white balance, FocalLength: 24.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 5D

I love both of them -- what can I say? The whiter/brighter look is a bit more festive, but I also love the more muted shades in the other one. Hey, it's Monday morning and I've had only one cup of coffee. Way too early for big decisions! :-D #1215930

While I can see the difference...the more distinct "white" in this one...I can't say that I automatically like this one better. The shading in the other is very "distinctive" as well...they are both quite beautiful. A white Ferrari or a yellow Ferrari? They both work for me!!! #8215198

When I first saw the 2 thumbnails I picked this brighter one, but, upon closer examination, I couldn't say it better than Jack or Monnie. I was probably only drawn to the brighter one because that's what humans instinctly do. Your compositon is flawless, Amanda. A very inviting photo, and I like how you managed to almost fill the frame with lights.

SHOULD the snow be whiter? What color was it when you saw it with the lights on it? The water properties of snow often make it reflect rather than project color. If it's blue, it's blue; if it's yellow, it's yellow. Post production can make it any way you want it. What makes it a better photo? Well, my fan may be showing, but I say if it's an Amanda Haddox, it's a better photo. #8217499

I like both of the images Amanda, but my preference definately lies with this brighter one! This is a wonderful Christmas scene, well done! #8218585

Hi Amanda...When I look at the two images and compare both,I will have to say that they are pretty on their own way.If I have to pick one,the 1st will be my choice..The reason is very simple to me and that is that it has more contrast, character and color tones and more prominent differences among the light, shadows and subjects to make it more interesting and appealing..
My own experience with tungsten settings have given me the color of the scene I have photographed..I used that setting when photographing a wedding at the conservatory and it gave me a yellow tone, like absorbing the color of the lights inside of the conservatory(didn't like the result I got).
The other time was in Fla. on a sunny day with blue sky while photographing an Osprey on a tree, the result was a blue tone on the whole scene including the bird (I was not please with the results and it was on tungsten by mistake)..
The Country Chistmas scene is a beauful
one and my preference will be your original image...It has more personality, but it is definately a matter of taste.
Your tungsten image is pretty and bright and both are well composed and they represent the Christmas spirit
and the season very nicely.
Photographicly speaking the original has a better feeling to it in my opinion and a the colors are more like I imaging the scene to be...Well done and captured and a good experiment with the different white balance settings...
Wich one is your favorite?..Happy Holidays to you and your family... #8234205

I will have to be a little different than the rest my friend. Each photo will stand alone on its own. I like this one because you coined the phrase yourself Amanda; "In My Minds Eye". This is the one you see. Stay with this one. Because of the brightness, it lends to purity of the season I guess. So I have chosen this one. Do you have power at your house now? #8240441

I like this one better, Amanda. Canon has a tendency to introduce "reds" in some of their white balance settings. It's just a common trait to Canon digitals. Beautiful shot. #8253818

I love this one. I am not an expert, but this one has an abundance of cheer added to it. Beautiful work Amanda #8264470
