OK Ronald I do know what this is although the full explanation would be too long for this thread.
This is a marker setting out the boundary of an area of land within the Forest of Dean that has been 'enclosed' and no longer is 'Common land'that could be used by the any local commoner to graze his animals. This would have been done by a Lord of the Manor or the like and it would have been registered with the Crown. It is interesting to see that in this case it says it is 'Re-enclosed' so presumably at some time previously it had first been enclosed.
The marker indicates that this re-enclosure was in 1896 in Queen Victoria's reign and her royal insignia VR (Victoria Regina, latin for queen) is there. The marker records that her Majesty's Commissioner was Stafford Howard Esq. His position was that of HM Commissioner of Woods and Forests.
Will that do for now Ronald? #1240951
