Mojave Desert Sunset

Uploaded: February 03, 2009

Description

Sunset in the Mojave National Preserve.

As the sun approached the horizon and turned darker shades of orange, I was moving around to find a good way to feature the unigue subspecies of Joshua Trees that grow there. Then 9 truckloads of hunters drove by, kicking up a lot of dust, which provided sun rays as the light streamed through the branches of the Joshua Trees.

All species of Joshua tree are pollinated by a single species of Yucca moth. The trees inhabit only 20% of their historic range, possibly in part due to the extinction of the giant ground sloth (which fed on, and distributed and fertilized their seeds). They are very sensitive to microclimate, and are likely to face sustantial challenges due to climate change.

Although you may not have had kind thoughts toward the hunters as you were choking on their dust, the softening effects of the suspended dust really sets this image apart from so many other silhouette-of-joshua-trees pictures. Congratulations on this brilliant improvisation--many of us may well have cursed our bad luck as we waited for the dust to settle before firing away. Craig Myers #1082415
