Spring
Uploaded: November 29, 2008
Swedish-American sculptor Cleas Oldenburg and his Dutch-American wife, Coosje van Bruggen, collaborated to design this 70-foot sculpture – Spring – which was unveiled in 2006 at Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul, South Korea.
The sculpture was inspired by the black snail (which is native to Korean waters) and is made of more than 200 pieces of aluminum, painted with blue and red ribbons of acrylic polyurethane.
It was created to celebrate the first anniversary of the restoration of the Cheonggyecheon, an urban stream that had been paved over since 1958. But the monument was controversial even before it was installed, because local artists resented the fact that there had been no open competition to determine whose design would be used.
Oldenburg and van Bruggen were paid $600,000 for their design, which cost $3.4 million to construct. The result is a truly spectacular sight – especially by night, when it is surrounded by a virtual rainbow of neon lights.
