Was there a conscious reason you left the very tip of the shell outside the picture frame? I like it that way as I get the feeling that the phi ratio of the shell (the mathematical number that determines the shape of many things in nature) is connected to infinity. Did you try a shot with the whole shell inside the frame?William Schuette February 06, 2008
Thanks to everyone for your comments. Marcus, leaving the tip of the shell out was a concious decision on this shot. With the black background, I saw in earlier shots that having black between the tip and the edge of the frame disupted the natural visual path created by the curvature of the shell and so kept paying with the angle and distance until I got this one. I liked this particular composition because I think it lets the viewer imagine that the spiral can just continue on forever outside of the frame. I am still reviewing some of the other shots and may post some more in the next few days. I am playing around with some B&W versions right now.Bill #5451869

Very interesting perspective William. It does look as if the spirel goes on to infinity. Great lighting and exposure. Was the blacking paper glossy in order to obtain the reflect on the bottom? Bill J. #5454168Heather L. Haderly February 06, 2008
OUTSTANDING work William!!!!!! #5454387William Schuette February 06, 2008
Thanks Heather and Bill.Bill, to answer your question, the paper was Savage jet black seamless paper with a matte surface. I believe that the "reflection" is the side of the shell where the natural husk had come off and the surface was pearlized.
