Dream chaser..

Uploaded: December 03, 2007

Description

This shot was taken at the Sankhamugham beach in Trivandrum. The perfect combination of unperturbed childhood and nature's glory compelled me to compose this shot. The sheer joy of innocence is quite noticable in the expression of this little chap.
The original settings are : Lens Nikkor AF-DX 70-300 mm VR telephoto zoom lens, Aperture F/11, Shutter speed 1/800 Sec handheld, ISO 320 at -0.3 step exposure.

I love what you've captured here. The emotion is great, and the composition is very nice also although the background does border a bit on interfering with the subject. The dirt flying off the boy's foot really helps capture motion.

2 suggestions to improve this shot and fix the bg problem. First, I'd recommend a wider aperture than F11 - tough b/c this was such a bright shot but work with a lower ISO (100 or so) and you should be able to open up your aperture and get the ocean to not be in focus. In post-processing, you can also selectively blur the bg; this will help immensely to isolate the boy. You can still tell it's a beach without the ocean being in focus. 2nd, the boy is a bit underexposed, masking his emotion. A fill flash in the original shot would help illuminate him; if you have photoshop, you can use the "highlights and shadows" tool to recapture some of his detail.

Just want to say again that I really like the scene you've captured here; a little work and it'll be a wonderful shot. #5164222

I love this shot.....wonderful capture of action! Great composition! I do agree with Steve about the ocean trying to take over, but I still love it! #5182740

I'm not sure that it needs fixing. Good composition and nice colours. It stands out, to me in any case, as one of those surealist type images that works as is. Whether you intended to capture it this way, or it is derived from fiddling in Photoshop is difficult to say with such a small image. But whatever, just get it printed and put in a nice frame and hang it on your wall. #5204088

Indrajit this is a Gorgeous capture. I love the effects you used, and I agree with Keith that to achieve the sureal look I think you were going for, I wouldn't change a thing. Keep up the good work my friend!! #5220434

My eye was immediately drawn to the boy, the joy and expression on his face captured so perfectly, even as a silhouette. I did not find the waters a distraction...I, too, felt almost a surreal look to the waters, and enjoyed the effect. Highlights and shadows tool in PS has worked many times for me. I would probably play with it as well just to see if I liked changes to boys features or prefered them as is! Anyway...love this, Indrajit! #5414498

This image is wonderful, Indrajit!
I love the surreal feel of the colors and the near-silhouette images in the foreground. Love the free-spirited-ness! I love the image as is, but, as suggested before, adjusting the shadows/highlights might produce some surprising results as well! Adjusting these selectively on the boy and birds might be productive, also.
Wonderful work here!
(Re-submit. in my eyes, it should be waering an EP badge...or beyond!)

You've captured the happiness of the boy so well in this one. The bright colors of the sea just adds to this. Wonderful picture! #5440670

Personally, I find the contrast between the silhouetted boy and dark birds against the bright colors of the sand and ocean to be extremely pleasing.
Your profile capture outlines his joyful expression perfectly, and the shape of those beautiful, curling waves is fascinating.
The above advice is all good, Indrajit. I'm sure you will find it useful, especially the shadow and highlight information. In the end, though, I truly love this image just as it is! #5457041

Myself, would not "fix" a thing.
I notice the boy's thin arms and body and so agile in his youth.
The water's colors are magnificent!
The detail of the birds and shadows beneath outstanding.
Just one magnificent image, so much to "see". #5504281
