I captured this image of the replica of Henry Hudson's ship the Half Moon this past week. She was at anchor on the Hudson River half way between Beacon and Newburgh, NY. Your thoughts? #739527

Cassie L. Woodlee September 16, 2007

WOW absolutely fantastic capture Dave!!! #4799009

Dianna Hauf September 16, 2007

My thoughts are that this looks as if comes straight out of history itself! I love the moody feeling of the atmosphere settled on the water, the ship itself is quite wonderful! It is as Cassie said, a fantastic capture! Wow...sure woulod have loved to see this!! I lived in Williamsburg for 8 years and miss the old ships down in Jamestown! Great job editing too! #4799514

Diane Dupuis September 16, 2007

You've captured the boat beautifully. I find the lights on the bridge to be distracting (and brings us out of history to now)... I'd probably crop those out...

Cassie and Dianna, thank you for your kind comments. I really appreciate it.

Diane, thank you for your observation and sharing your opinion. It gives me something to think about. I actually lightened the bridge lamps to bring them out for just the reason you suggest blending them. It was such an overcast day and they showed so nicely I enjoyed the way they framed the subject. Thank you. Dave #4800637

I love the mood you've captured here. The very soft, misty details other than the boat, emphasizing it beautifully. I tend to like the lights and the fact that you've enhanced them. I think they add to the mistiness and make the bridge very clearly a bridge, although I see Diane's point as well. Sometimes these are such very subjective decisions--and always difficult to make. #4802757

Mitch, thanks for your thoughts. I to like the lights but am interested in what others think. Dave #4803699

I really like the feel of this image, Dave, and I think a good case can be made for either approach. One thing that I think would improve the image is to not have the ship centered. I played with a possible crop. If you would like to see it, I'll send it or upload it here.

Steve- I knew I could count on you. Be all means upload it. I have maintained all the layers in the original so I can easily go back and re-work it. Let's see what you got. Dave #4804132

Steve M. Harrington September 17, 2007

I used the Rule of Thirds to get the ship out of the center and give it room to move. What do you think?
I think I like the "feel" of this version even more, but both are great. #4804156

Dave Winchell September 17, 2007

Steve, I do like the crop however, when I was originally playing with it I wanted to keep the bridge, the lights on top, position the ship with more space toward the front AND maintain a large enough image for an 11 x 14 print. I agree it needs something so I will go back to the uncropped RAW and see what I can do. I have to leave for my "live" camera club now but I'll try for tomorrow. Thanks alot Steve! Dave #4804218

CONGRATULATIONS Dave on the Ep's!!! SEE? They liked it too!!! I like the bridge and lights!!!! I think the image is fabulous! #4807009

Thanks Dianna! #4809190

Well done, I have see you captured the Yankees boat leaving the harbor LOL! Awesome composition Dave! I like both versions alot, but I am with you and the lights on the bridge and the framing it provides!

Don't worry, Dave W. My Blue Jays may take away a bit of Dave's smugness. :) #4813483

Dave Winchell September 19, 2007

Dave, Thanks so much for your comments regarding the Half Moon. Were it the Yankee ship I assure you, it would be coming in! I just cropped the image to an 11 x 14 ratio for printing and very much cropped similiar to Steve's suggestion. Dave #4813485

David Pratt September 19, 2007

Yeah, those Blue Jays, can really ruin a guys night....or should I say nights..... #4813492

Dave Winchell September 19, 2007

Hey Steve, I missed you here. I love the Blue Jays. #4813500

Steve M. Harrington September 19, 2007

I'd like to see your crop, Dave. The lights are seductive, but I think they draw the eye away from the ship. Actually, I think you have two great shots in one here.
I see my Jays have gaciously spotted the Sox a run just to make things interesting. :) #4813505

David Pratt September 19, 2007

Well, we will put in one of our fine relievers to give it right back... #4813519

Dave Winchell September 19, 2007

Steve, Here is my 11x14 crop. The "PR" is just a designation I give for Print Ready. I kept the lights and enough light water to create the depth I wanted and still maintained a DPI of 220. I did loose the one water-locked support but something had to give. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks Dave #4813530

Steve M. Harrington September 19, 2007

I like it, Dave. I would prefer the ship a little higher in the image, on the 1/3 line, but now it is not centered and the lights add to the mood. As you said, something had to give to get the ship off center stage. #4813598

Dave Winchell September 19, 2007

Thanks Steve. You need to know the rules before you can break them however often times they just work better. I need to be more conscious of off center composition during the capture. Course for this one I had an umbrella under my chin while trying to handhold a 300mm lens. Thanks for your advice. #4813639

Steve M. Harrington September 19, 2007

A little muti-tasking, huh? :) One thing I am forcing myself to do now is leave some space around my subject for later cropping. Not too much, mind you. My camera is only 5 MP. #4813665

David Pratt September 19, 2007

Wonderful crop Dave. See I told you our reliever would give it back.....1 1/2 games... #4813802

Patrick Rouzes level-classic September 19, 2007

Interesting conversation here, guys.haha
Dave, for what my opinion might be worth, I prefer it without the lights...
Steves suggestions are cool though.
Jays all the way here, too.
Exceptional capture no matter how you crop this, Dave!!! Excellent work again here!!! #4813805

Dave Winchell September 19, 2007

Thanks Dave. I think it came out well and I'm really glad you like it. Dave #4813811

David Pratt September 19, 2007

I love the Jays too, just when their not playing Boston.. #4813817

Dave Winchell September 20, 2007

Patrick, thank you for your opinion. I knew you guys wouldn't let me down. The crop I've attached is the print version I will be going with. The lights seem to be nothing more than a preference and not a matter or right or wrong. #4815155

David Pratt September 20, 2007

I see you got an EFP for the original Dave! Well done! #4818203
