Shawn, I can't recommend poses; this certainly is not my area of photography. However, I find this image ambiguous. The composition is technically good, but I'm left wondering what you want to emphasize. Is this image a study of light, a body, a personality?

I think you should first decide what you want to convey to your viewer. Then decide whether to shoot only a part of the body. If you are going to include the face, decide whether to have the model looking into the camera, or off in the distance, or gazing up or down. Each of these decisions will affect how you shoot and how your viewer will react to the image.

Steve THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I was trying to show off his nice arms and chest. I was also tring to using the lighting to make it " moody" LOL I guess I failed. Nothing like failure to make you try harder. I just wish some one would help me with some poses. I am lost with this one. This is our son and I have been trying to get some photo's of him before he leaves for Ranger Training in the Army.
People photo's are very hard for me to do and I have been try to get better at them.
Thank you so much for the help I will reavaulate my purpose and see what I can come up with.

Maybe if you had his hand on the top of his head ?? I think the problem with this one is you lose his hand?? It's a great shot though perfect exposure and I love the tones in it. I think men are very hard to photograph but I think you did a great job with it. #4107697

Teri,
Thank you for your idea. I will try that. I have had a real hard time trying go come up with poses for him. Handsome young man and I can't seem to find the right pose. I will have him try this pose with the hand on his head and see what that looks like. Thank you again for taking time to help. #4110322

Hi Shawn,
First off I agree with Steve. It's best to know what you are trying to portray as interest in a subject & then show that part off to its best advantage.
Your son has a very nice body & I know he's worked hard to get there. (My brother used to be an amateur body builder.)
This pose unfortunately leans more towards the feminine side. Men you want to portray their angles, their strength & the solid lines to their physique.
A more masculine pose would have been if you had the elbow out at about a 90 degree angle with bicep flexed & the fingertips resting on the top of his head with him either looking at the arm or having him look square into the camera with a straight face & the jaw squared.
He has great bone structure in his cheek bones & in his jawline. Use them to his best advantage.

At this particular angle in your shot the arm is stretched so much that you have lost the definition in his chest & arm & the armpit has become more of a focal point than the arm & chest itself.

The biggest thing I could tell you as far as posing is to have stronger angles & lines. Square things up & don't be afraid to move your body when you shoot so that you can see the best angles. 45 & 90 degree angles make very strong clean lines for men & give a much stronger overall appearance to their bodies & faces.
Good luck!

Michele,
Thank you VERY much. I will try these tips this weekend when I can get him to stay home long enough. LOL The girls just keep calling and calling and calling...LOL!! In fact I can't wait to try the angle idea. It makes since when you explain it that way. I truly appreciate you taking time out to help me!!
I will post some next week Maybe you can see if they are better.

shawn you may be able to get some very nice photo's from different pose's, but unique will not be achieved,of the 10's of pose's all have names and are performed countless times, try showing off his body without letting on you are showing off by using a prop, perhaps a war torn solder uniform and all. #4135028
