Morning Twilight on Mono Lake

Uploaded: March 01, 2007

Description

This is Mono Lake, pronounced Mono with a long O in both syllables. This lake is more than twice as salty as the ocean. Underground springs formed these towers called “tufas.” Just over 50 years ago these tufas were underwater but much of the lake has been drained and the tufas became exposed. Efforts have been revived to preserve the lake as it is today. These tufas provide interesting photo opportunities. The mountains in the background are the eastern Sierra Nevadas in the cold winter of December. - AIV 030107

Let's hope that Mono Lake IS preserved as it is now at least... Why was it drained? It CERTAINLY provided a WONDERFUL photo opportunity for you here, anyway!! V-E-R-Y nicely done indeed!! :o) #4009579

Fabulous image, Alton!

Was at Mono lake a few days ago (quite the trek to get there!). Began to pour as we arrived at the visitor's center. After driving across Yosemite, it was storming so harshly that we turned around before actually seeing the Tufas!

So glad I could see this beautiful capture!
