Having grown up in the age of steam I have a love of these old locomotives. Thanks for this one Mary.
But, can you explain the title, it's lost on me?

black widow-- engine along with many other names such as iron horse

the age of steam continued through the 1950's here at least becuse the big blue Skoda Albatros was built in 1947 and runs as well or better than it's diesel and electric regional counterparts. and although I am not sure, many of the work engines here that do yard work or regional hauling are hybrids or steam or they wouldn't be putting out black smoke.

I was searching for a different image but couldn't find it from a different engine. apparently all czech locomotive engines have red wheels.

I don't think that I am making it up-- but found the name through a search when I was looking for search terms and tags to load locomotive pictures on another site. There are special trains that run nearly all year round in Czech Republic. They are so popular that it's advisable to reserve seating because although you can walk on without a ticket, you will be standing in an incredibly packed train.

It's possible on some trains to stand on the platform between the cars, but in the Albatros this is not a possibility. So on one train, I rose the platform which was great-- but it brought a lot of heavy soot into the beer :) !

if you want the links to the articles and images, I'll put them up here for you

I just have to go look for them
