This is my youngest nephew, Jeffrey, with Buck. Taken April 15th, mid-afternoon, partly-cloudy, with zoom. Cropped, enhanced, filtered, and some cloning in background.

Jen, thanks so much for appreciating this one. I actually have several taken of Jeffrey with Buck. I like them all. I'll attach another one that is a favorite of mine. That big hat (which is actually mine) shaded his face entirely and made it possible to see his face so well. I'm going to remember that in future when photographing folks with horses. Hats help! Another hat photo is a little different. The straw let the light through and it is kind of interesting that way. #2798544Kathy Reeves June 13, 2006

I appreciate you commenting on these, Kathy! The problem with the sun hat and a couple of others I took the same day, is that Amy's skin was too light. When you photograph a black horse and a pale person in bright light, it is extremely hard to make both look right. Either the horse will have no highlights at all or the person will have washed out areas. Because we spend most of our time photographing horses, I'm more concerned with getting them correct; once I took this series, I was unable to get Amy's skin to look right in PS (partly due to the speckled shade thrown by the hat). Her neck and chest just wouldn't adjust. Maybe when I know more about using photoshop (I bought the Missing Manual for Photo elements 4) I'll try again. It would probably be easier, though, to just ask Amy to pose again! Thanks, though for the encouragement. As for the Valet parking, I thought I'd just include one of those and chose the one with more going on (Buck examining Jeffrey's shirt). I actually have four or five from that "shoot" and I like them all, but since we must limit our photos to 30, I decided to just display one of them. I think the skin tones in these are great! The reason being that the contrast between the buckskin horse and the child's skin is much less extreme than between Amy's and the black horse.
