Laboratory Madness

Description

While teaching a laboratory exercise in atomic physics, I asked some of my students if they'd like to pose for a picture. This mercury lamp was bright enough to allow for a 1/80th exposure in an otherwise completely dark room. Changes to the original image: Color balance, contrast adjustments & edge preserving smoothing in PSP 7. The 'cool' glasses split the light into its components to make spectral lines visible, an amazing effect! In that way this lamp shows as a colorful line spectrum. Resubmitted into the monthly theme as this was just too fitting, we had great fun. :)
