Another stormy day in Texas. This one happened to miss us.

Nikon D7000,18-200mm, 1/80 sec at f4, 31 mm, ISO 100, LR5 and Silver Ex Pro 2.

The storm clouds look ominous. I don't know much about Silver Ex Pro-what does this do and would you mind posting the original to compare?

Those clouds look like they have a life of their own-I like the contrast of them against the treeline. Very nice job. #10702121

Here's the original. We couldn't believe the cloud formation we were getting. This doesn't normally happen here either, Dale. It was the first night of the nasty weather that has been hitting Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Please keep the folks in Oklahoma in your prayers. My husband is on his way up there for his job to help. #10702221

I have to agree the color version does make for a strong image for me not that the b/w isn't good. but for me personally I am not the biggest fan of b/w I'm usually pulled to what I natural see, and I like color. #10702430

Thanks, everyone! I like both versions just because of the composition. I couldn't believe the cloud formation we got! Thank goodness the dry line is now last us. It took several days for this session of storms to go through.

Well I am not the worlds biggest fan of B&W images, but I have to agree that this one is outstanding. I do like the color version too but the B&W is a winner in my book. The mood it sets is simply wonderful. #10703032

Great picture, Kalena. The silhouetted foreground is well laid out and the drama in the clouds is wonderful. Besides, I am a much bigger fan of B&W images than Mike -- especially for pictures that convey mood.

My opinion is the the B&W is much more interesting. It brings out the texture and contours in the clouds much better than the color version. I don't know if you used a preset or applied additional adjustments in structure, micro-contrast or the color filters to accomplish that, or if Silver Efex did that for you and you just got the benefit of a preset.

That's important because I think that is what is missing in the color version. If you know what that is, then you might be able to get the same benefit from Color Efex, HDR Efex, or Viveza modules.

Put my vote down for the B&W too. It is hard to explain, but so often it seems when one is shown a B&W together with the color version of an image, then the color one tends to appear more as a pretty picture whilst the B&W makes me think more deeply about the image. If the object and purpose of an image is "Color" as in a sunset or a flower then yes the choice is certainly color. But here the storm is the object and purpose of the image and B&W lets us feel the approaching threat.
Very nicely done Kalena. On the night of the Oklahoma disaster the storm passed just to the west of us and took out a couple of houses and a bar a few miles north of Edwardsville. #10703916
