Flying

Description

Went to the Keeneland track early morning practice for my own slow panning shooting technique practice. Found out fairly quickly that slow speed panning a galloping horse (shutter speed priority: 1/60 s) does not really work too well, at least for me; too herky jerky. Only a few "poses" worked, directly perpendicular, during the glide part of the stride (pictured). Unfortunately, if you get more than one horse in the frame at one time, forget it… Lesson learned: it's a lot easier to shoot fast (1/800, or faster) and freeze :).

Exif: F Number: 11, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/60 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 250, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 77.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 40D

Its fun when you can learn some new things about the best way to shot a particular kind of shot. You learned quickly and got yourself some amazing action shots to boot. Love the blur around the horse and rider and the way it adds to the feel of the horses speed. Perfect timing in the fact that all four feet are off the ground. Gorgeous colors, superior work my friend. #10091336

I tried the same thing with auto racing. Found a level spot and used a tripod. Got rid of the herky jerky but it was still difficult and my results were not as good as this shot. This is fantastic Randy! Congratulations on your Finalist selection! #10156691
