Dan your zoo series is wonderful. You really captured the animals personalities so well. I see your f/stop was at 5.6 so you got a nice sharp subject with a blurry background which look great. Did you increase your ISO to brighten the picture or increase the shutter speed or both? #1371173

Thanks Misty. My primary objective on these shots was to keep the shutter speed high enough to minimize motion blur. I made all of these shots handheld. I mulled over taking the tripod but being inclined to the lazy :-) I decided not to. Of course there are often opportunties to brace the lens against some sort of support object. If you're familiar with this lens, it's long and heavy. So the desire to keep the shutter speed up. f/5.6 is wide open for this lens so I left it there and adjusted the shutter speed to give me the exposure I wanted for the particular shot. I'd look at what the camera metered the subject light but then adjusted the speed up or down depending on whether I wanted more or less exposure. Depending on the range of adjustment I would go up or down with the ISO. It was a gray, overcast day and some scenes were in shadow. And yes, the apperture setting did help through the background out of focus. #9362469

Thanks again, Misty. I do like to, at least in some cases, focus in a little tighter on a subject if by doing so I can end up with something which is impossible to achieve by way of mood, message or even humor when left in the original framing. This takes it completely out of the "girraf in a zoo pen" realm and now makes just a silly face statement. #9408923

This is a wonderful image Dan! I know the girraf is eating but kind of looks like a silly/huh? kind of face :-) #9408954
