"We bones that here lay..."

Uploaded: August 22, 2010

Description

This photo was taken inside Capela dos Ossos ("Chapel of the Bones"), a 16th century chapel and one of the best known monuments of Évora, in Portugal.
Hundreds of monks skulls and bones cover the walls of this chapel in an attempt made by a franciscan monk to pass the message that life is transitory.
Above the entrance is written "Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos" which means, in a free translation "We bones that here lay, for yours keep on waiting, day-by-day."
