Description

Wildlife Safari animals tour continues

This Roosevelt Elk is the old man of the park, old enough that he no longer loses his antlers. In his retirement he just lays around taking it easy watching us tourist go by...

It's nice to see an elk get old! In the wild the older ones get picked off by prey, it seems. Just the order of things in nature...

First thing I noticed here was that his antlers looked "different"...Similar to burned tree branches. Would you agree? I wonder if they get brittle and break off with age?

Wonderful image and story telling, Denny!

Thank you, Laura and Renata!
Laura, The deer family which includes elk, antlers get small, deformed and just don't fall off anymore if the live long enough. The farm I worked on when I was a teenager had an old buck that hung around in the orchard for what it seemed like years. He was not very wild so we got a good look at him. He had this little brush pile on top of his head that was always the same. When he disappeared and we guessed died, we looked for him to get a close look at those antlers but we never found him... #8511885
