very nice, jeff...what is this anyway? #1248044

A beautiful full frame in B/W Jeff. The design is very intriguing. Only thing I would have done would have been using a smaller aperture for a slightly better DOF but its interesting still!!! #8452878

Peter W. Marks March 13, 2010

This is a very interesting image Jeff. I am agreeing with Laurence though, up to a point. An alternative to a deeper depth of field would to focus on a point closer to the lens so that those foreground patterns are sharp and then letting the out-of-focus patterns fade gradually off to the rear. Does that make any sense, friend? #8453013

Jeff E Jensen March 13, 2010

Thanks all!

Debbie - this is a very old (Older than Dale and Peter combined) Egyptian vase on display behind glass at the Brooklyn Museum.

Laurence - I understand what you are saying on the DOF, the challenge I faced was that there was very little light to make this image with so a smaller aperture just wasn't helping things out.

Peter - What you are saying makes perfect sense. Maybe I'll play with the crop a bit to see what I can do. #8453033

All talk about apertures, and DOF aside, Jeff.. I really, really like this image. The Geometry is exquisite! This is a work I would hang on MY wall! #8453407

Jeff E Jensen March 13, 2010

Thank you Joan, that is very kind of you. #8453432

Jeff, I love this shot. The pattern is very cool and you captured it very well. Especially in a low light situation. :) #8453651

Rita K. Connell level-classic March 13, 2010

I knew this was your picture befor I looked at the name. I would definitely hang this in my house it would go great with my red furniture down stairs. I wouldn't change anything about it like just the way it is. #8453847

Peter W. Marks March 14, 2010

Oh heck Jeff, while I was getting all technical about point of focus I forget to say how much I like the image but am not sure I am going to now that you have equated Dale and I to the ancient Egyptians.
You say that this vase was behind glass in the museum ao out of interest did you have to use a polariser filter to cut out any reflections?
And to our friend in the red dress who says she has red furniture. Do post an image of that, I live in a brown world and at the moment am invisaging you blending invisably into scarlet furnishings. #8454161

Again The World thur Jeff's Eyes. I really admire that you will take shots when the conditions are so adverse. Thur glass and low light, I would have given up and passed this shot by. And you get great shots. #8454296

Anthony L. Mancuso March 14, 2010

I like the abstract design and curved lines Jeff. The Dof doesn't bother me at all, I think it works pretty well actually. #8454351

Aimee C. Eisaman March 14, 2010

Seeing the images you have been posting in the EP thread lately I'm becoming a very big fan of your work Jeff! I'm so impressed with this image that you took in low light and behind glass. YOu are taking challenges and they are paying off. Suggestion to try...not sure how it will work out, but worth a try I'd think. I would like to see this image as a whole 'POP' more. Maybe increase some contrast on a separate layer because you may need to erase it with a large soft eraser in the sharp focus areas. You may also find that you need to open up the shadows after doing this. Or another idea would be to make a duplicate and try different blending modes and lower the opacity to taste. JMHO (Just My Humble Opinion) :~) It's really a cool shot... you filled the frame beautifully! #8454420

Kathleen Nealon March 14, 2010

Well good day all. I see Im late to the party.
Jeff, Great eye in seeing the potential in this gallery piece. I would have risked upping the ISO to gain a smaller aperture. But I think it's the glass case. Perhaps museums should have all antiquities behind B+W UV glass. #8454632

Debbra Bailey March 14, 2010

I think this is beautiful! I love the black and white, the design, and the composition - makes the whole thing very interesting to look at - keeps the eye moving around :) #8455558

Jeff E Jensen March 14, 2010

Well, I must say that I appreciate all of the kind words. I do really like this image, however, the DOF issues make this one sit not quite right with me. So, armed with a few suggestions from Dale, I spent a little more time on this one.

I'm still not 100% sold on it, but I think a few of the issues have been addressed. #8455635

Rita K. Connell level-classic March 15, 2010

jeff this is a hard call, I like the boldness of the new post but I don't like how it brought out the out of focus area( it has become a strong distraction to me) so my vote goes back to the original post. #8456545

Peter W. Marks March 15, 2010

I think Rita is right Jeff. I like what you attempted her but there seems to be a too-abrupt transition between the in-focus and the out-of-focus areas. It would likely be better if you could create a more subtle blend. What do you think? #8456773

Kathleen Nealon March 15, 2010

Jeff, I agree with Peter. Somewhere between the two to create a more subtle blend. But I definitely like the clarity of the second post. #8456850

Debbie E. Payne March 15, 2010

Even though the clarity is nicer in your repost there is something about the original composition that I prefer. It seems more graceful and the curve is better in the first one. As always, I look forward to your original and interesting POV's. #8456879

Aimee C. Eisaman March 15, 2010

I'm honestly not a huge fan of the flip on this one. I do like the bit of pop it has to it now, but in doing that some red seems to be present in the background area. You could easily do a bw conversion to fix that problem. I don't feel the DOF issues as it creates a neat line to follow. :~) #8457094

Teresa H. Hunt March 15, 2010

I'm in agreement with the rest. I really like your first post better. I liked the really narrow DOF . . . it gave the photo a graceful feel in contrast to the sharp pattern. Also not crazy about the flip. :) #8457182

Michael Kelly level-classic March 15, 2010

Jeff I think the first post works pretty well and the second, though technically a little better, just draws too much attention to the DOF issue. I like the comp and think it is remarkably good for a low light through glass shot. #8457839

Aimee C. Eisaman March 18, 2010

Congrats on your EP Jeff....knew we'd be seeing this one again! :~) #8464764
