Re-entry from 2008 when I first joined Betterphoto. I have since learned a few editing touch ups...
I wanted Faye's fur to 'pop' because she has the most beautiful black fur I've ever seen. These are my settings.
(levels, desaturated abit, brightness +3, contrast -1, sharpened +65 also I cleaned up by cloning her eyes/nose/some spots of fur and finally re-sized/cropped better.)
Exif: F Number: 5.6, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/150 seconds, Flash: fired, auto mode, red-eye reduction mode, ISO: 400, White balance: Manual white balance, FocalLength: 180.00 mm, Model: PENTAX *ist D

Thankyou so much, I really appreicate your kind words... I love this shot too.
Out of all the labs I had in my life (as a kid we raised Labs and they were used as hunting dogs) Faye has the smallest nose- when born- she looked like a poodle. (Funny looking to me).
