Pileated Woodpecker

Description

You can imagine my surprise a couple of weeks ago as I sat here in my typical morning mode commenting on photos, when I heard a loud crash at the window behind me. This poor guy had flown right into my window, and landed tail up below.

These are the largest woodpeckers in North America - about 15 inches long. It took about 20 minutes before he could get himself settled enough to be able to fly away.

(The funny part of this story is when he took a nose dive to the ground below - he did JUST that! Remember the old Woody Woodpecker cartoons?!) His poor beak was about half covered with sand! I cropped this so that the dirt was gone, and to get more details of his beauty. #264088

I am so sorry this woodpecker was injured...but what can you do?? That's's life.
You're captured the fine detail VERY well, Stephanie! And kept the sharpness on the eyes...a lovely pileated woodpecker...up close and personal! #1475894

Wow, the detail and color are wonderful, Steph!
I had a grouse that flew into my picture window one day.
It shattered the window and glass flew all through the living room.
You were lucky ;)
