North America's Oldest Buffalo Jump

Uploaded: December 29, 2009

Description

This is the site of our continents oldest known buffalo jump located at Mile Canyon in Val Verde Co., Texas. The first definitive jump occurred over 11,700 years ago in 9700 BC at the end of the last Ice Age and bones of extinct bison antiquus were found. It was almost 8,000 years later about 800 BC that the next jump occurred and bone in bone bed 3 were so massive that they combusted thusly giving the shelter under the crevice seen in the photo the name "Bonfire Shelter" It contained bones of Bison bison the modern day bison. Captures of that shelter will follow and it is because of this bison jump that this place is in the National register of historic places. Emile

Stan it seems as only Archeologist and Historians have enjoyed these as much as I did in taking them. I feel I live in a very sacred place and am trying my best with the days I have to record the tremendous events and history that goes back 12,000 years. #8967407

Emile, this world needs people like you to record this for future generations. This sight reminds me on one that is 80 miles east of Calgary, It is called "Head-smash-in" buffalo park. 35 years ago you could walk all over the sight, but now it has been fenced in. In the early days I found a rock half round, flat botton, top half chipped which would fit into your palm. Assume that it was a woman's used for scrapping the hides. I still have it #8972361
