The Old and The New

Uploaded: October 03, 2009 07:47:34

Description

Giant sequoias evolved with fire which is necessary, as fire reduces competition from other vegetation, without it, the species would not survive. After a blaze significant enough to penetrate the velvety soft cinnamon red bark the tree builds curving layers of new wood over the edge of the scar. This capture shows the fire damage to the older trees and a young sequoia survivor on his way “hopefully” to a long life.

Exif: F Number: 4, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/40 seconds, Flash: did not fire., ISO: 320, White balance: Manual white balance, FocalLength: 50.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

Fascinating, Melissa! I didn't know that they did that, built new wood around the scars. I love the warm red colors, and the composition with the tiny (maybe not so very tiny) tree in comparison with the giants. #8010126
