Stormy Eve at Battery Point

Uploaded: July 18, 2009

Description

A friend wished for beautiful clear blue skies during the day for our drive up the California coast and a storm when we reached the lighthouse that night… As we arrived, dark stormy clouds began slowly drifting in behind the lighthouse as day gave way to night. A neutral density 0.9 was used to lengthen the shutter speed and give a silky look to the crashing waves but the sky would wash out so a 2 stop (0.6) Galen Rowell Soft Step GND filter was used so the clouds would retain their color during the extended exposure time. 5/11/09 8:09 pm. Battery Point Lighthouse, Crescent City, California. Camera Settings: AV, ISO 100, f/22, 10 seconds, -0.7 EC, spot metered for the lighthouse. Tripod and remote release

Glad to see your work on BP...and glad the weather cooperated. Great image to start...excellent composition and the lighting is outstanding. Very dramatic mood...and those clouds are a real plus. And thanks for including the "settings" you used. Amazing what can be done with just the camera. #7753393

Hi Amanda. Nice to see your work here. This is one of my favorite shots of yours. Masterfully taken, truly. I always appreciate that you include your approach and techniques used in each of your shots. It inspires me to be more patient when I'm out shooting, and to take my time to think the composition through. I haven't mastered this process yet :o) Thanks for sharing your remarkable work. #7755200
