Eric Highfield level-deluxe May 16, 2005

Well, first of all, I'd like to thank all of the little "Peeples" that made this image possible... lol
Thanks everyone, for your very generous Feedback! This is a digital compilation of 7 or 8 photos and did indeed require extensive digital manipulation, and was entered in the Digital Art category on this website.
All the photos of the Chipping Sparrows where shot on the fence in our backyard from our home in Bracebridge Ontario, some were used more than once, but I tried to make minor changes to the head angle or feather patterns on each one to help keep a little uniqueness to each bird. The Blue Jay was shot on top of the fence, and is actually much larger in comparison to the "Peeples" than depicted here (I had to make him fit in the lattice work).
Above is a colour version of the photo. I went with Black & White as it seemed that without the distraction of colour, it put greater focus on the composition and design elements of the image.
Thanks again everyone!
- Eric. #1356923

Eric Highfield level-deluxe May 16, 2005

Pam #1357554

Suzanne Yelverton May 16, 2005

Great picture. Changing it to black and white really made a positive differece. Took away the color distraction and focused on the design of the photo. Good manipulation of your chippers! Thanks for taking time to describe how this was accomplished. I am just a learner and so am always interested in how these wonderful photos were done. #1357583

Kay Beausoleil May 16, 2005

Truly impressive -- congratulations on your POTD, Eric! Convinced your multiple birds were a manipulation, I checked and found that though many had curiously similar markings, they were all subtily different, so I got unconvinced. Thanks for telling us the real story, and a WOW for the wonderful work you did. And your B&W shift was a great choice, too. #1357738

Vik Orenstein May 16, 2005

this shot made me LAUGH OUT LOUD!!! thanks for the wonderful chuckle! I must say, though, I like the color version --the jay's blue head makes him look even more "odd man out" compared the the little brown sparrows, so it adds to the story, rather that being a distraction. but I seem to be in the minority on this viewpoint. in any case, congrats on a well-deserved POTD! #1358261

Sandy Driscoll level-classic May 16, 2005

I too think this is a great composition. I love the design aspect. I think they're equally as good in Black and White or Color for the affect they produce. #1358676

Pu Chen May 17, 2005

Great job, Eric! And thanks for your explainations. Although both come out very nice, I like the color version a bit better. Congratulations! #1362039

Eric Highfield level-deluxe May 17, 2005

Thanks everyone for such a warm response! It sure makes the effort worth while.

It seems to be pretty even on the colour vs black & white, so I'll probably make both versions available.

Dawn and Omneya, this is a composite of several photos, and was subject to extensive modification to create the story (several hours of work at the computer). More details are in my earlier response. Thanks again everyone! - Eric #1362910
