Thrasher Making Do

Uploaded: June 13, 2009 00:18:00

Description

The top beak is definitely broken. But, the bottom beak is extremely long.

Unable to pick up much food from the ground, a platform feeder was purchased with this bird in mind.

Love the detail in this beautiful bird.

How long have you been aware of this bird with the broken beak? A songbird rehabber, with the help of a vet, might be able to repair the beak allowing for a less stressful life. #9911883

I photographed the Thrasher in 2009 and the last time it was seen was during 2010. In 2011, a new neighbor moved next door with two yappy dogs and a bunch of football playing teenagers. Haven't seen the bird since.

I've seen the offspring, but not the mature bird. Unless the Thrasher comes to my yard or feeders, I have no way to find it. I will try to find a songbird rehabber for the next time an injured bird comes to my feeders.

This was captured when I could still walk well. Now, it's another story. Going to the rehab pool today for what we hope is a repeated practice to get my legs and hip moving again.

Thank you for your advice, Melinda. #9912734

I'll bet that bird appreciated the help with the feeder. Nice work, Bunny, on the feeding and the shot as well. #10008443

Thank you, Mitch and Chris, for your comments. I received a lot of pleasure buying the feeder for that bird (although the doves generally take over and pig out on the seed.)

But, even more satisfaction was received with the lighting set up. By moving the lights from the window to the bird(s), I was able to create more attractive lighting for both fill and rim lighting, which helped the bird(s) stand out from their background while making them more comfortable when the flash fired. #10014126
