Lisa Young May 26, 2019

Congrats Sharon on second place. Didn't realize we both entered similar shots of duck's in a feeding frenzy. But,we took our shots differently, mine's a fast shutterspeed and your's is a slower shutter speed which is cool. Will have to try that next time I'm at our zoo. #66312

Bernard B. Travers May 26, 2019

Sharon, my wife wanted me to tell you that this picture so reminds her of Thanksgiving around the table at our house.

GOOD JOB, AGAIN, LADY. #66317

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Lisa - great minds think alike but you would be surprised at the shutter speed on this one 1/125! That's how crazy they were!!

Bernie - thanks, thta's too funny! Thankfully, it isn't like that in our house but Christmas last year was - we had 17 family members staying in our house and eating Christmas dinner! And, of course, it helps to have a few vegetarians in the family to keep everyone from chasing the Christmas goose (or turkey or whatever!) #66347

Lisa Young May 26, 2019

I looked at mine and it took 1/320th of a shutterspeed to freeze the water and duck action which just like yours the main ducks were mallards. :-) You sure you weren't next to me at the Denver Zoo when I took mine? ;-) #66357

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Lisa - I wish I was. I had taken my son and a friend to UMass Amherst to see what the campus was like. It was a frigid day to say the least - probably about +5F or so and there were *hundreds* of ducks (and a swan couple) on this mostly frozen pond. They followed us around but we didn't have any food for them. As we were getting ready to leave, a couple showed up with several grocery bags full of bread (I assume they went to the local store and got all the really old bread). As soon as the ducks saw them, they went into a frenzy and I pulled the camera out from under my coat and started shooting. It was on aperture priority and was set at f/16 so my inital photos were really blurry. But, I had the presence of mind to change it to f/8 and got some better shots, including this one. I asked the couple about their feeding habits and they said they came every Sunday to feed the ducks and swans - likely the only reason there were so many of them because it has been a very, very cold winter and most of the water fowl have disappeared around here - all our local ponds are basically empty of wildlife because they have been frozen solid for so long! And, I think I've spent more on food for the songbirds (and squirrels) this winter than I have on people food - a really bad winter here in the northeast; likely to go down as one of the worst in history. #66481

Lisa Young May 26, 2019

You must have a slr then Sharon. I have a Sony DSC F707, so my highest fstop is 8 and I had 2.8 for my version and it wasn't cold for February either. :-) We need your snow to get out of the worst drought, according to the tree rings, since the 1600s. #66485

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Lisa - you're right - I have a Canon EOS D60 (Christmas present but already discontinued by Canon!!). With all the snow we have had this season (I think we're about 20 inches above normal but I could be wrong), we're still below normal precip - amazing....but, I also think we're not as bad as Denver so we'll keep dancing those Indian rain dances for you!! #66490

Hi Sharon,

Glad you won on this fantastic shot!

I also enjoyed your description of how you took it. Always great to have that camera available. :-)

Congratulations!

Many - Thanks! I'm sure your birds would never do this though - they are much too pretty!! #66663

Many Feathers May 26, 2019

Aha Sharon,

Now you've inspired me to take a photo of their "feeding frensy". When a couple of them eat something sticky that they really like, like spaghetti or refried beans or oatmeal, they get it all over their beaks. I'm going to have to try a closeup of that with their beaks submerged under the food or something. Ha!

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Sounds like great subject matter for our lighting class with Jim!! Looking forward to seeing your birds with spaghetti all over their faces! #66682

Yes, I was going to buy a D60 later this year, now it will be the 10D. Hopefully by the time I have the money to get one the wait won't be months. #66749

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Lisa - hope so too! I'm sure you will be happy with it and at least it is less expensive than the D60 was and has a better focusing screen. #66783

Lisa Young May 26, 2019

And once I get it, I may ask what lenses worked for you. :-) #66889

Sharon E. Lowe level-addict May 26, 2019

Thanks Sharon, added you to my address list as Sharon D60. :-) #66919
